I've been thinking of getting one of the Harley Benton PB-50 basses, painting it butterscotch and reshaping the headstock to the Fender profile. I think that would be a cool project.

I managed to get my parents to buy me a 2nd hand JayDee Supernatural back in 1991 and as a huge Mark King fan then I was in 7th heaven. About 10 years later I was able to afford to buy a Trace Elliot 300W amp and all I needed was a band to play in so I could live my Level42 cover band dreams! Sadly, I had to sell the amp and the bass now just sits in the corner looking sad. Might have to start playing it again now.

I always liked his bass sounds and playing from the standing in the light album. Not sure if he used his pangborn warlord bass on the recording of that album. But we did get to see it on the living it up video and later on the lessons in love video, at the time i thought it was an Alembic, which as you stated he later used, I saw him use the Alembics at the barrowland back in the 90s, brilliant sound they made but very expensive. JDs are a good cheaper alternative.

I appreciate your information. I own several basses and I'm picking one of these up Saturday to add to the collection. I'm looking forward to playing around with it.

I was listening to Level 42 today (June 2024) and it reminded me of a guy who I watched play slap bass from Love Games many, many years ago, well over a decade. I tracked you down, Dude. Apologies, Gary. This still sounds as excellent as it did all those years ago. Brilliant! .. I hope you're doing well.

I've got one of those too - brand new one from 1993. Used to play the hell out of it - just sits in the corner now looking sad.

Hi Gary1 I have a G2220, I love my Short scale bass, but after doing some aesthetic upgrades I messed up my pickup height. Can you tell me the factory specs or how yours is set up. Thank you.

Great Video. This model was the one I planned to buy. Finally got a JayDee Roadie Active built in 1986. I love this Bass and will keep until my end.

Hi Gaz, I'd say Marks 30-90 strings also play a big part in his tone too 👍 btw my Jaydee will soon hopefully be ready 😁

Sounds like something's going on with your audio/input - like there's too much gain. For anyone wondering, that distortion/too much gain sound isnt the bass

Cheers for this . Really helped me set up my neck relief and string height , I was measuring at the wrong frets and not getting the ideal results - I have now 👍

I Believe when Mark King worked in the music shop he was playing in the drum department. I heard somewhere.

Of all my basses, this is my favorite by far. A great combination of playability, tone, comfort, and looks. Relatively cheap, too.

bought one of these when they first came out, same finish, this is one of the best guitars I have ever owned, play it all of the time, I use Laney guitar tube amps, a 15 watt VC combo, also a 30 watt LC, for the price this is one of the best guitars I have ever owned, I no longer play my electric guitars, a Fender made in Japan blonde Tele and a 61 Gibson SG reissue I now just play my acoustics, a guild and a Paul Brett Statesboro 12 string.

I’m glad you’re on KZbin. I’ve got this Gretsch G2220. It worked great for a year then…… 1st the input Jack almost fell out a couple times. Then the 3 way toggle switch started buzzing, It would work at the neck pickup and then quit I’m using a new cable and a( brand new fender v500 combo ) then volume would drop out. How do I shield this properly like you said. Any idea what’s going on ?

Gary, tips for future posts. Stop the history lessons: anyone watching will know who MK is. You could have cut this to 5-6 minutes. You just lose people when not cutting to the chase. Adopt this and watch your views increase.

Hi Gary, thanks for the vid. Sat through the whole thing! Just wondering, as I'm trying to adjust the bridge on my Jaydee - If I try to lower the bridge height (not the saddles, the bridge) I'm not totally sure in what order I should adjust the 3 screws on each side? Surely if I try to lower it with the middle screw then the outer 2 smaller ones will stop it unless they're turned too? I don't really understand it and don't want to snap anything! Would really appreciate your wisdom! Great job restoring it and great playing too. True OGS remember you were the original KZbin bassist Gary! 😅. Cheers

Great build! Beautiful peace of ash you got there... Awesome! Just an observation: if you're cutting the "comfort curves", it's not a 51 P-Bass anymore: it's a 54... or later (until 1956). Only in 1954 "the cuts" were introduced by Leo Fender. So, from 1951 to 1953 they're all slab bodies.

What a great video, I read are all the comments about your playing towards end, before seeing it. You’re a beast in the bass! I wasn’t taking too much notice of these Gretsch bass’s until today.. these look like a great deal for the price bracket… there’s a dark red for sale close to me, which I may try and grab! Cheers for the video! New sub here
