You could say that we got the Triumph bug: My dad kicked off with a Herald estate, replaced it with the early Vitesse which my brother ended up with, when dad found himself a nice Audi 100. Then my brother replaced the Vitesse with a newer 2-litre and yours truly found himself a K-reg MkIII GT6 - which I scored for £300, then I spent all the rest of my cash (and a bit more) on it. Great wheels, but the 2-litres were pretty thirsty. Still, I kept the GT6 until I stopped driving, just a decade ago. I did love that rorty little bugger.

I owned a new TR7 in 1978. The problem with the car was its mechanical reliability. The engine had a tendency to boil constantly and blow hea gaskets. Fun to drive, and as soon as the warranty expired, I got rid of it.

My (late) old man had an BLMC 1800 TC back in the 70s, it was our main family car for most of the era. Even though my childhood memories may be a bit fuzzy, I think you captured the smoothness and the feeling of elegance you had when riding in the (for me then the back) of this car! thankyou for dragging me down memory lane!

The owner sat in the rear seat, the front seat was for the Chauffer

My brother had a Dolomite Sprint for a couple of years. It was a fun car but was a total rust bucket. Classic British Leyland. The Slant 4 was a missed opportunity as Saab did amazing things with it. I had a 9000 and with just a remap and a fat downpipe It made 320HP. They are bombproof which is more than you can say for BL.

I largely leaned to drive on an MG 1300 version. It was a great car. Bhp from those days, sounds so little but the power to weight was great. The weight of cars today is just horrible and that is more significant than the difference in any 0-60 or any max speed but how such light cars went around corners. Admittedly, if you went around that corner at a speed you should probably still hesitate about and be faced with a broken down car right on the cusp... Well good game, good game. Today airbags and cumple zones will save you. The 1100? Not so much.

Had the 520 1976 automatic and loved it to death. It looked almost as nice as the 3-series, and it had no issues whatsoever considering it was 12 years old at the time. True, it was not the fastest but man was it a nice driving machine - the engine sound was a delight.

When I started earning some money, the first car I bought for myself was a 216GTi. I absolutely loved that car. I really wish I'd kept hold of it
