I grew up with Mini's back in the day when you could buy a used Cooper S for £300. Yes they were rusty back then but we went everywhere in them. I almost had every version, a 998 Cooper, the 1071, a handful of 1275's, a Clubman GT and at one point a Mini Van. As a boy with a new driving licence they offered freedom and expression. Move on 50 years and I have just bought another Mini, a heavily modified Mayfair with a new Heritage shell, an Avonbar 1310 engine along with a full leather interior, central locking and power windows. At 70 years old I have come full circle and I recently let my son drive it for the first time. He was only meant to go for a short drive but he was gone for ages. When he eventually got back he was grinning from ear to ear. He proudly announced that it was the best fun drive he had ever experienced. Honestly, if I never drive the thing again I still have the luxury of just looking at it. Real Mini fans will totally understand that but it will be lost on many... it seems I am not alone, every time I take it to the shops people want to see it and talk about it.... you can't say that about many cars.

After the fashion wore off the Mini had to move back into the 'value' car, unfortunately as you mention that meant it had to be stripped back to basics as it was labour intensive and hence costly to build. Weirdly it became the class of almost one once the 'supermini' class erupted. But in that smaller market it still sold. I had 2 Minis, a very tired 1000 that was well past its best before date and a later Clubman Estate 1100 that was brilliant but even my tired old 1000 was enough to give me the Mini driving bug and that was its trick. On paper it no longer made sense for the cost but once driven with just a modicum of spirit it was enough to ignite something hidden in the driver that they would never forget. The car was less transport but fun to drive. For me the best Mini was the classic Mini. Many thanks for sharing and bringing back so many fond memories.

The Mini is the Terrier of the car world! I love Terriers. I learned to drive in a Mini Clubman Estate [suffix L reg] and the first car I drove regularly was a blue M reg Mini Pick-up. The pick-up was probably the best handling Mini, and with its 1000 cc engine and the short gearing of the 850 [as a commercial it was in those subject to an unenforced 40 mph speed limit!] meant it really was very quick on winding narrow roads. Not fast flat out, but responsive like a good road bike. My mother had two Mini saloons, a green F reg and a mauve M reg, which both went to Norway with my mother, my brother and I to stay with my Norwegian grandparents in the late sixties and early seventies. Halcyon days for sure. Best wishes from George

In the early '90s I owned a Park Lane Mini and drove a Metro van at work. The Metro, with it's vague steering and wallowy ride was like driving a blancmange compared to the Mini. The Mini wouldn't start after heavy rain, you could open the locks with any key small enough to fit in the slot and it had to have rot patched up countless times, but you put up with the flaws because it was so enjoyable to drive.
@TwinCam3 ай бұрын
Can't say I agree. The Metro's steering is just as accurate as the Mini's. It's suspension is much softer, and BL's decision to shun the Hydragas' interlinking cannot be justified as it ruined the balance, but the softer suspension was absolutely necessary. People weren't prepared to put up with the Mini's awful ride quality anymore.

I remember when the Mini 30 was launched (I was 11 years old). It was reviewed in the August 1989 issue of What Car? magazine, pitted against 9 other superminis. I thought that the 30 was an excellent bit of packaging and spurred on many other limited edition Minis during the 1990s such as the Equinox and Neon. I myself had a well used 1990 Racing Green 1.0 in 2001 - 2002 which was based on the City.

My first two cars when I got my driver's licence in the mid seventies in Australia were a blue 1965 Mini with a white roof and wind up windows (luxury!), and a beige 1963 Mini with sliding windows. They both cost $425 AUD, and the 1963 model replaced the 1965 one that was written off when someone rear-ended it. The insurance payout bought the 1963 Mini. There were fun times including many breakdowns due to wet electricals during thunderstorms, a complete brake failure going downhill when collecting my youngest brother from school, and one of them rolled down the backyard of my parent's house into a tree when the handbrake failed to hold. The doors were still locked and my youngest brother and sister were up in the back bedroom of the house, looking out of the window and laughing as I chased the little car down the hill! None of those things were funny at the time, but driving a Mini was always an adventure.

The reason for keeping the ,imi in production was simple.. age profile.. the thinking was, the metro was a family car, the mini was an old persons car. A two seater plus.. but of course its entry level price meant it was also a car that was perfect for driving schools and therefore became an entry level car to the BL brand. A bait car, and in short any car that would bring a buyer to BL meant one less to Ford/Renault/ etc..

Thanks Craig 🙂 The Racing Green, Flame Red, Checkmate, and the Mini Sky all launched just before the Mini 30 I believe, testing the waters for the Mini Cooper the following year. As for Minilites, however, I don’t believe any of them were originally fitted with them. Certainly, the press photos show them on steelies with trims, but I believe that many were up-spec’d by dealers with Minilites once the 30 came in. Happy to be corrected, however.

great presentation as always Ed. you have to be a Mini adict to call it 'the greatest car ever made.' the Mini was for sure a genuine game changer, a line in the sand from which the (non-American) automotive industry would go forward from. of all the cars that came into our garage in my youth the Mini was one of my least favourites because of how awkward and cramped it was to work on plus all the heavy structural rust caused by the build up of compacted mud between the body and subframes. for everything that's so right about the Mini there's so much wrong with it. in fact, such was my dislike of the Mini, when it came to buying my first car I got an Imp and on the tiniest of budgets I turned it into a 1275GT beater. but hey-ho, nobody and no car is perfect. I went on to own 2 Alfasuds, an Alfetta GT and Cortina 2000GT before hitting 20. its all about what works for the individual.

Minis aren't perfect. Not by a long way. But cars are so much more than operational competence. The Mini was a maverick, full of character and designed by a man who was totally uncompromising. Issigonis' lack of compromise got him sacked from BL in the end, but the cars he created were magical as a result.
@thatcheapguy5253 ай бұрын
@@TwinCam absolutely Ed and I would never want to dampen the passion anyone has for the Mini; it is a true icon. in some ways the Mini sums up Issigonis. if he'd left BL in good time for another maybe we would be enjoying many more of his creations using others' running gear.

Minis don't rot where the subframes are, they rot where the subframes aren't. The first bits to go were where they got salt blasted by the wheels. The exception is where they put anti drumming mat on top of the rear frame, but it's far from the first bit to need attention.

You’re right about the beautiful colour Ed! - I sprayed my mini a similar shade (Jaguars Claret) back in 1972 which was nice, but I had never heard of clearcoat back then! Happy days 🇬🇧

The mini was a small cheap car, made cool by good marketing, so richer folks would buy them, and poorer folks could afford them. It's a pretty good way to do things. Unfortunately the Mini and Bug remakes lost sight of that so they kinda suck.

This car dates from a time when people actually drove. Today's cars are so filled with gimmicks and "driver friendly" nonsense that we are benumbed in "driving" them.

I’ve never owned a mini. But I totally get how some cars can override your common sense and practicality. We have a 2010 Toyota Aygo. Which is poorly built. Cheaply built. Has a sloppy gearbox and no seat adjustment. But it just can’t help reving like a sewing machine. You have to lean into a roundabout as if riding a bike. The more modern iteration is bland and sanitised by comparison. . It’s the most fun I’ve had in a car since I owned a 2cv. 😊

To be honest I am not convinced that the 30 edition saved the Mini... if any boosted the brand towards the 90's it was the Cooper.
@TwinCam3 ай бұрын
The Cooper is the car that took it on, but the 30, before the Cooper and before its preceding LEs, was what made the Cooper possible. Without the 30, it all collapses.

Slap an EV powertrain in there and that car would be a blast!!
@TwinCam2 ай бұрын
I like EVs very much. In fact, I’d like to restomod a Citroen DS someday with electric power. But for me, an EV conversion would ruin a Mini. Partly due to the weight - a Mini drives how it does thanks to its low kerb weight - but also due to the character of the A-Series engine. Dinosaur muncher though it may be, the A-Series is central to the Mini’s brilliance in my view.
