MY GUESS IS THAT THE GARAGE WE KNOW TODAY STARTED AS A SHED IN THE YARD FOR FARMING TOOLS OR MAYBE BARNS. NOT EVERYONE HAD A CARRIAGE OR EVEN A HORSE BUT THOSE WHO DID , MOSTLY THE WELL OFF HAD CARRIAGE HOUSES IN THE BACK OFF THE HOUSE. THEN DURING THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH CENTURY GARAGES DEVELOPED THAT WERE KEPT IN THE BACK OF THE HOUSE. MOST HOMES HAD LARGE FRONT PORCHES THAT MADE IT FAMILY AND NEIGHBORHOOD FRIENDLY.

The only issue I have with anything said is “show me a historical example of brick being laid like this” 1. Define historical 2. When they first started using bricks to build houses they didn’t have a historical precedent to base it on. It’s ok to do something that does not have a historical basis. Most historical architecture was limited by availability of materials. They did what they had to do, with that they had available, for the times they lived in. They didn’t have cars to consider, they didn’t have electricity, they didn’t have running water or indoor plumbing, they didn’t have televisions or computers. We can’t get so caught up in what they did in 1723 that we don’t build our homes for 2023.

I find the conversations around McMansions fascinating. In my area, these houses are highly sought after and are 90% of new single family constructions. They start at half a mil and they never stay on the market very long. I've been looking for a nice, spacious ranch but that's like panning for gold. It's ridiculous. Housing in this country is an absolute mess.

Agree with the lack of depth of windows looking cheap. But this ties in with cheap homes constructed for the masses. The features you are talking about can only be incorporated in a nice custom home. It’s hopeless for the rest of us.

True, I feel like its optimal use of space to not have recessed windows in affordable mass housing, and it can only be incorporated in custom and expensive commercial projects in my opinion too.

Excellent video. I agree that the trust factor between customer and builder is paramount. Once that trust is broken it will not return and the project turns into a nightmare.

"Architecture is a reflection of our culture." That was a profound statement. I think the main reason homes have lost their character is because the building of the home has become mostly for wealth building and not to be a home. Another similar reason is people build a home and try fit all these wants in but if they just built smaller they could afford a nicer timeless home. This is unlike let's say 70 years ago.

you didn't mention turning the house 45 degrees to face the corner, which would make a side entry garage easier. What are your thoughts on that?

I’m not trying to troll you. But you’re knowledge on the topic and tips sounded great but I couldn’t really see what you were illustrating. Using you’re screen and tiny curser the way I can with chalk / dry erase board. But I wanted to visually see what you were describing bad enough. That I made like 6 attempts going over it to make out everything and I couldn’t. Just saying

Great to have another video. What an interesting and engaging talk. There is so much I have learned from your videos about the aesthetics of architecture and the interplay with interior design most definitely adds to that. Thank you both so much.

I was reading Gustav Stickley's Craftsman Bungalows (book compilation of plans from 'The Craftsman') and in it there is a throwaway line referring to "the servant problem." He is referring to the shift in the post-war 1950's I believe - upper middle class families were no longer able to afford the daily in-home help that until that point had been taken for granted. So the bungalow was one of the first forms designed and grown around the idea that there may not be employees running the kitchens or other 'working' areas in the home. India is still very Victorian in this regard and the colonial-Indian architecture reflects this. Ironic because the bungalow was derived from India.

The first (I think) sudo-HOA in America was Leather Village in a Detroit suburb. It was started in the 1930s and completed in the '70s. From my understanding, their only requirement was each house had to be different. This caused for all the designs to be original, and what I'd consider as timeless. Unfortunately, today's HOA's have clearly strayed from this model and now boast houses worse than my 5yo nephew's sketches

the problem with curb cuts seems to me to be less about the curb cuts and more about the way we do setbacks in most areas, and also how horribly ugly modern garages are. I certainly don't notice or mind curbcuts in old urban centers with large carriage-entrances, even though they often have curb cuts or low curbs.

May I ask why you live in McMansion-esque house? In where I originally came from, in Cambodia, many architects designed their own house. Some of the expats won some awards for really unique and beautiful designs. They may have different elements from different eras but they all had unity and balance (asymmetrical). Thank for these great videos, some of those McMansions you've shown are beautiful until you stared at it for longer than 5 seconds, or when you cut half of the facade. I really appreciated knowing why architects kept making them despite seeing none of them really liked them.
