I’m starting to believe the majority of the price for professional lighting comes from the housing, cool features (not necessary), and convenience. I don’t think they’re using proprietary bulbs or some magic you can’t buy on your own. Edit: I should add I think this about continuous lighting. I’m not sure how to diy speed lights.

Why dont you use just halogen lamp instead of led. Cheap Leds color rendition is poor.

Oh my god. This is so good ❤ Did you use cold or warm white lights? Wonder if that's the main difference between your lamps and the expensive ones! The copper bowl, is it copper color inside? I'm going shopping right away 😂❤

I think I’m going to pick one of these up for recording band practices, live shows and just on the fly stuff. I do not understand all the angry comments about this camera I’m seeing online. It’s a really great mic with a pretty decent camera and tons of convenient features all for $200, what more are these people expecting out of it??

Great stuff. At a minimum, these give you a super affordable way to get started. By chance did you noticed how consistent the white point was between each light? Crazy times in post? Regardless, thanks Tyler . . . excellent video!

The problem with cheap LES stripes is that they have low CRI (RA). If you buy something with CRI >90 or CRI >95 the result be similar to 300$ Light. And prize for CRI>90 shouldn’t be much morę expensive that the cheapest one

Spring for high CRI LED strips and you may well match that $300 setup for just $60, max. Or if portability and power consumption are of no concern, get those aluminum dish work light fixtures, and halogen bulbs. Nice warm light with sunlight level CRI. I love halogen, but it just isn't portable because they use a lot of power and need plugged in.

Thrift Shop is the way to go. I used LED flood lights that screw into a normal socket and bought a socket from HomeDepot for I think $2. I have two large totes filled with cords (I keep all power cords to everything) so I had cords to wire into the sockets, otherwise you can buy a cheap two-prong extension cord from the dollar store. The sockets bolt into the center of the pans. I also used dollar store shower curtains as well for diffusing. For stands I mounted some on PVC pipe and a few fittings, some on just a heady duty clip from the dollar store, and one on an extra tripod I had bought from the thrift shop for $3. All together my lights cost about the same as yours. I did a 5 point light system and bought a few yards of green fabric for green screening (although with the filters built into video editing apps, green screening is practically obsolete). Same as you, I ended up duct taping the diffusing plastic to the bowls. I did make an enormous light that was about 9 square feet using about 10 sheets of dollar store foam board, hot glue, and aluminum foil. With the lights mounted inside it weighed so much I had to build a special stand for it out of 2x4's and a large gate hinge to tilt it. I put that one on wheels and used it for a lot of product photography.

I think on the $30 set up, if you put a more "warm" lighting with it. It would look more "genuine" to the $300 light setup
@jo_ellee3 ай бұрын
My thoughts exactly. Because the only difference I can see between the two is that the $30 light makes his face look more washed out

For a mounting solution, depending on how much thread you have to work with, you can just buy a nut from the hardware store and thread it on from the inside. If you get a locknut, or stack two on top of them, it's not going anywhere... Also, a strong threadlock is the way to go when installing threadserts metal-metal. *If I planned on using these consistently, what I would probably do, personally, is make an adapter. Get a peice of thick dowel, drill both ends for threadserts, one side for your stand, the other so you can thread a longer piece of all-thread, or even a bolt from the other side. That way you can do exactly what I mentioned above.* If you have a bolt that is too long, thread a nut onto it before passing it through the inside of the light, into the threadsert. That way you can tighten it again the bowl wall.

Biggest problem in the DIY lighting is the low CRI value that makes the colors bad. If you fix that you get much better outcome.
