Azumah, was such an exciting fighter. That uppercut was something special. I remember watching this on tv in 1985. Almost 40 years have flashed by. I’m now 57 😳

The axe kick is fantastic in training, but i don't think it would be the best choice on the street. For example if a person is wearing restrictive jeans could interfere with obtaining the maximum height reducing the momentum. If the timing is not spot on, it can be telegraphed, and probably the most unforgiving of all kicks in performing follow up techniques. In dealing with the mobility of a boxer so as to evade the kick, the karate fighter could be jammed, and pushed to the ground.

One of the best uppercuts I have ever seen. Waited to Cowdell to throw the left and countered with devastating effect. Nelson was an all time great and understandable why McGuigan avoided.

Watching featherweights from this period, I always think of Sal Sanchez, tragically killed in 1982, who destroyed Nelson and would, I believe, have become renowned as the greatest boxer of all time, not just the greatest featherweight.

Didn't destroy him. Won in the 15th round when Nelson was still on the way up , only his 14th professional fight.

Why not? Cowdell went 15 rounds with Salvador Sanchez and held him to a split decision and Nelson was stopped by Sanchez. Cowdell had what it took to compete with Nelson he just got caught with a good shot here. Thats boxing, it happens
