I’m doing a test on precision measuring tools for millwright! And I understand this more solidly than what my instructor was explaining how to do it me being the only one who doesn’t do millwright work The most we use at my job are calipers

This is great. There's another video, actually one of those old training films, that explains why the vernier scale works. Simply put, it doesn't line up exactly with other scale, for example it might, for example, divide a fraction, for example 4/5 of a main scale, into 5 parts, of the vernier. In that case, a vernier line is 4/5th of the main scale. Then by finding the line closest to the main scale, you can work out the next decimal place ( I am terrible at explaining it, but there's videos with competent explainers :)

Hi, I would like to ask a question. Please. I have the tailstock aligned on the horizontal axis but slightly higher on the vertical axis. Do you think this is important? Should I also adjust the tailstock on the vertical axis? Thanks.

Maybe in 300 years the Americans will discover the simplicity of the metric system and how it helps prevent errors.
@tyquanwashington.851025 күн бұрын
Any American with more than two brain cells responsible for logical thinking agrees with you. If it were up to me, the entire country would have 5 yrs to fully implement the metric system. The Imperial system would then be dumped in the same location in the ocean Osama Bin Laden's body was.

You have a link to a file selection guide on the Travers site that I would think cover a lot of the information presented here. However the link is dead... 404 error.

Hi! Might sound like a no-brainer, but are the TRACKS on which aluminum windows slide ALSO aluminum? Windows are leaking rainwater,, and a window specialist told me to drill a few extra holes on the other side of the track as extra weep holes through which rain can escape. Bottom line is, I wanna use the right drill bit for this metal Thanks in advance!
@wonbythe13 ай бұрын
You can use pretty much any drill for that, shamelesschic, since it's a thin material.

I bought that same bar, and sent it back. I rolled it on my surface plate and the machined ends were not in line. It rolled like a bent axle. The literature said the accuracy was verified in the U.S.
@wonbythe13 ай бұрын
I'm so sorry about that, rodgraff1782. Whatever happens in the center (the red anodized part) is insignificant. It's each end that should be accurate-- independently, and with each other. I'll check what we have in our inventory so this doesn't happen to someone else, but if you purchase it from Travers Tool Co. within the past 30 days, let us know and we'll get a replacement sent to you.

Thank you so much this was very helpful! My friend bought me a pair of calipers as a gift which were supposed to be digital but he accidentally sent me some dial calipers and I had no idea how to use them. I didn't even know they still existed since every set of calipers I've used has been digital. Either way they were really expensive and I told him I would do my best to learn because he gifted them to me and I'm not a jerk when it comes to gifts.
@wonbythe13 ай бұрын
You and your friend both sound like great guys. I prefer the dial calipers over the digital ones for a variety of reasons. The only time digital calipers are better is when I'm taking both metric and imperial measurements.

Nice video, all except at the 6:18 mark. I'm surprised it's been two years and no one caught that he entirely misspoke at that measurement when he stated. " 4.409"...
@wonbythe14 ай бұрын
Great catch, AXNJXN1. I forgot the decimal the first time I said, "4", so I repeated it and said, "point 4..." When using a micrometer, anything before the decimal is determined by the size of the mic, since they only read in 1" increments. So it it was a 3" to 4" mic, it would be "4.409". I hope this is helpful.

Would have been much easier to explain in decimal instead of fractions. 1 and 1 hundred and 25th of a thousand is better conveyed as 1.125 inches.
@wonbythe14 ай бұрын
I agree, @Bren39, which is why I did this video in decimals. Fractions are "a thing" though, so I might do a video someday on reading a ruler in fractions, and then if we're talking about what would be "much easier"-- nothing is easier than the metric measuring system, once it's understood.
