How do you feel about Magnacut in straight razors? Keep in mind that the INCLUDED bevel angle is typically 16° to 17° or roughly half that of the typical pocketknife, and the edge needs to be quite smooth. Would it be better than say AEB-L in this application?
@NateAIMКүн бұрын
It would be my choice out of the abrasion resistant super steels, due to its edge stability and corrosion resistance. But I think it's going to be tough to beat AEBL at a high hardness in your application. I guess, short answer, I don't really know.
@growleym504Күн бұрын
@@NateAIM Fair enough. My target hardness is HRC 60 to 61. Harder is just bragging rights. The typical user would not appreciate having to hone an HRC 64 razor, nor do I, and very hard razors do not respond well to stropping. Anyway I suppose my tentative plan is to try both but my new milling and grinding setup will take some time while life gets in the way.

Edit: These guys are WAY ahead of the problem. Apparently they’ve stockpiled the precious Delta CPM 3V 😂👌🏻 With the production of quality thin sheet CPM 3V (the metal composite used in his knives) raw material possibly ceasing, we might not get to own a knife like this for a very long time. Metallurgy has come a long way, but knives are a bit of a niche for the manufacturers that supply these specialized materials. I’m genuinely feeling FOMO right now. Let’s hope that CPK has a good stock of CPM 3V that’ll last awhile.

@@NateAIM. For some reason I assumed you guys went through all the hassle of heat treating. I’m thinking ‘maybe they’ve got a small batch machine with an oil drop’😅. I used to do heat treating in Dayton Ohio for awhile, so my imagination here was running wild.

The best steel fails in its specific purpose when badly heat treatened. The holy grail for production knifes is a) to stabilize the brought in condition at the supplier of the steel bars and b) to establish a contiuous and stable heat treating process. You can do the same delta ht for 3V process controlled. And much more stable than a guy building knifes in the hut with an oven. Steel is delicate and it does become more complex with the complexity of the metallurgic composition. Period. Therefore a 440C knife can be much better in any task than the best hyped Magnacutter where a parameter of the ht process drifted slightly.

This is why I really don't like the current hype for hardness grades of 62-63 Rockwell. I am a lock and toolsmith and made blades, including a knife for a friend that he wanted to be able to cut mild steel, without breaking and being able to cut paper afterward, without any jamming. It worked great, the hardness was a little less than 60 Rockwell, and it was a C70 steel. The problem with people like Larring Thomas, the one who developed the Magnacut steel, is, that these people have a ton of theory but not much practice so they usually don't know what an edge should be able to withstand. Thomas calls 62-63 the sweet spot, yet even his own scales show that the loss of elasticity is greater than the amount of edge retention that you gain compared to around 60 Rockwell. Of course, you can work wood and cut rope with it and it will hold up great, but once you run your knife into some softer type of rock or put another reasonable amount of stress onto it, with this configuration, the edge would most likely chip. In a blacksmith workshop, any edged tool can cut hard-scaled iron without the slightest chip or dent. That is because the tools are a bit less than 60 Rockwell, we temper it very carefully and we know that it would break at 62-63, considering the high stresses on the material that occur in our environment. The CPM 3V was fantastic here, from what I found out, this steel/hardness configuration is much closer to the mentioned tools that I use.

I would wait her the largest difference would be that geometry. These Magna cut knives were taken down to .015" or less before sharpening. Four degree per side primary grinds with 18° per side edge bevel. I would wager that magna cut at 62 or 63 would cut unhardened steel all day without problem if it were shaped like a cold chisel, which is much thicker and more obtuse. The CPM-3V in this video is 60.5. I'm careful to point out, in the video, that the edge geometry is 18 dps on these test knives. This is important although a lot of people won't understand the significance of it. But, even a crappy steel can look very impressive on a video if it is sharpened at 25 DPS. It won't cut very well though.

That's impressive. I wouldn't go as far as the side loading abuse. But sometimes accidents happen. And it's really nice when the knife survives. I also used to believe carbon steel will never rust on me, because I take care of it. But one summer day I was obscenely sweaty. And the thin oil film on my blade didn't keep it from rusting. Since then I polished out the bit of rust, learned basic leather crafting to protect the blade better and also improved the protective compound with a bit of bees wax. I'm sure what you created is stainless enough for my needs.

My guess before watching it's that D3v is mostly using the low tempering regime for better toughness and hardness, but with a lot of care and optimization for temperatures, cryo, optimized austenitization and at least double temper. It's not magic but it's well beyond what most do. Such care put into the heat treatment into any steel would make it perform almost super compared to even good steels with subpar batch vacuum furnaces with consistency and less ideal programming, no cryo, and single temper. Update: Yeah, pretty much. The bolt test is a good real world use if you hit a staple, nail, or rock. Aeb-L is my favorite cheap steel.
