Cool video. I watched a guy explaining the chemistry of Ferric Chloride. If you simply mix it with 3 parts water then it becomes Hydrochloric Acid. This will completely blacken stainless steel in about 1 and a half minutes

What would happen if your blade has a stamped logo or metal identification number? Would it remain legible?
@Hosenhoffen
@Hosenhoffen Жыл бұрын
It should, it eats the highs and the lows equally. unless the stamp has paint or a sealant or some kind of barrier between the acid and the metal.

Nice vid! What is oil cool steel? And should you temper the chisel back to say 260C (500F) and quench it in oil again? I saw that in other video's but I am not a blacksmith. I have some soft chisels I would like to harden again. Thanx

I have a question, wath are the safety measures to use the Ferric Chloride and wath tools should i use for this... thx
@Hosenhoffen
@Hosenhoffen 5 жыл бұрын
Dreamy Depression okay man, you need safety glasses and chemical resistant rubber gloves and a minimum. If you want to go over the top with safety, face shield, plastic apron. Tools you need two plastic buckets with a lid, one full of your ferric and water and one full of water with lots of baking soda mixed in. The baking soda is to neutralize all the acid
@OwenPrescott
@OwenPrescott 4 жыл бұрын
@@Hosenhoffen I have 945ml of unused Ferric Chloride I want to dispose off. Any idea of the water ratio to FC I need before neutralising into the the Soda/water? It's frustrating to see many videos on how toetch with FC, but no videos detailing disposing of it.

The blade was hot at temper temps, you can sort of move it and straighten it a little when she’s at 400 or so.

I tried counting the seconds from the blade going into the quench and when you took it out to straighten a little in the vice. Any basic guideline ? Say ten seconds in quench and ten seconds to straighten before placing back into the quench. ?
@Hosenhoffen
@Hosenhoffen 7 жыл бұрын
Six seconds into the quench, then four-five seconds to straighten it before it gets too hard to move and you risk breaking it. Then stick it into a vice and let it gently cool to room temp! Good question!

How I do this with a charcoal forge?
@Hosenhoffen
@Hosenhoffen 8 жыл бұрын
With a charcoal forge is kind of similar to what I did with my gas forge. Move the blade through the firebox back and forth through the fire. You might consider breaking your charcoal into ping pong ball size chunks so you can push the blade through more easily. Also you may turn up your blower a bit to build a bigger fire. Just pass the blade slowly through the coals, flip it 180 degrees every few minutes or so, and don't let any one spot get more than an orange heat or you will enlarge the grain in the steel and it won't harden properly. If you have any more questions just ask!
