Does somebody know how to use an external manual flash with it? Somehow my Ricoh GRII doesn‘t trigger my Leica CF Flash, which works on basically everything from SLRs to my digital Sony. If I attach it to the Ricoh nothing happens and I can’t even get to the flash settings. Am I missing something?

Several times you call it plasticky. There’s nothing plasticky about any OM 40 / PC. It just has a rubberised coating.

The top, bottom, and front are made from plastic.

antique folding cameras are like children, you gotta put a ton of effort into getting their shit together for them to produce anything good, but once they do you put it directly on the fridge, front and center because you're proud more of the effort you put in than the quality of the image

The humour and tone feels like if Kai and Lok adopted and raised a child together who turned out to like cameras and photography as well. 😂 Fab video nonetheless. 👌

I have a full collection of 10 series Olympus cameras and the 40 is definitely up there. The worse being the om30. The 10 is a bit overrated and expensive, awkward to use, as well as only having Av as standard. The 30 is a washed out version of the much better 20 being the best in my opinion and the one I’ve used most.

The whole point of the square format on TLRs is that it’s impractical to use the camera in any other way apart from looking down on the focus screen (I know there is the sports finder way of shooting). This means one does not need to change the camera orientation when taking pictures but one can crop for portrait or landscape later when making prints or keep it as a square picture if one prefers. Later 120 film cameras overcame this limitation with separate film backs etc. Using a TLR camera is an altogether different picture taking experience and one worth the effort if possible

Hi, I've recently come into possession of one of these, however when I see the 120 film online I see things like 400 120 or 200 120 or 100 120 film. My guess is the first numbers are the shutter speed? Would I be right to guess that 100 120would be most suitable for this camera?
@samvarleystephens8 ай бұрын
The numbers are the ISO/ASA, which measures how light sensitive the film is. The lower the number, the less sensitive, so the more light it needs to expose an image. Personally I'd choose 400 for convenience unless you live somewhere sunny.

Adding the sò called quick loader is definitely a good idea. No need to remove the spool and with a bit of practise is fairly efficient.

I too own the OM40. It's a great and reliable tool, no doubt about that. And a bargain as well! Similar cameras I own (and use) are the Minolta X-500, Canon AE-1, Leica SL2 (actually a Minolta inside) as well as a plethora of Dynaxes, Sigmas, Mamiyas etc. All from the early to late 80s. *But there is ONE camera I keep reaching for when it counts - the humble Nikon FM2.* It doesn't even have an automatic mode, let alone a program mode. With this camera, you don't need those things. The camera is so well thought out, so well proportioned and ergonomic that you don't need those things as you can use it intuitively and with a very high success rate. If you need more advanced metering, try the FA or the FE2. Both are very similar to the FM2 but offer a bit more comfort ;-)... . . There is ONE reason why I will pick the FM2 over the OM40 (well, three actually): the FM2 will be fully functional without batteries! The OM40 won't do anything with dead batteries - not even shoot at the standard 1/60s (while the FE2 and FA at least have their 1/125s sync speed as a fall-back shutter speed). Oh, yeah, the other issue with the OM40 is ergonomics. Setting a shutter speed is just cumbersome... to say the least. worst of all, it doesn't have a DOF control button - essential when shooting portraits, pets, close-ups! I'd say, if you are serious about shooting film, you HAVE to give the classic Nikons from the 80s a try - you won't regret it!
@WeirdCongsАй бұрын
The DOF control of OM camera is actually on the lens, one of the 2 pins used to unmount the lens is for close the apeture blades :)

I own an MP (better than an M6, all brass, internal metal components, better shutter dial and better advance lever) I owned an M6 and sold it for the MP. My backup is (drum roll...) and Leica M2. And I have to say that both the cameras I own are better than the M6 for the reasons listed above. Here is the bigger travesty: folks are paying 5k for a Leica MA (essentially an MP without a light meter) Or put another way it's an M2 at a fifth of the price. For people in the US, I had the M2 loading system swapped out cheapy at DAG Camera out West, which he does promptly and send right back to you. So now it loads like the more recent Leica M cameras. It's a great camera. The M6 holds sway because it was the most commonly made in the 90's and early 2000's but it is not the better camera in the Leica M range at all. Last controversial point: the best Leica ever made is not even a Leica (ha), it's a Hexar RF. (I own that, too) But that is another post....

I don't get the bitchy comments. You did a great job working with an old camera. Personally I love this camera for B&W but I use expired film not the 120 heck. The trick is not on how to the use the camera, it's the lab afterwards. Good video.

So I jut found tis camera my mother in law has had and was never used. It took me a while to get the bellows to extend. I had to use a lot of Vaseline which helped but a few holes are at the bottom but some of you have great tips on how to remedy that issue. I am looking into getting film but I am not sure which is the right one and how many pictures does just one roll take if anybody knows any of these questions. please let me know. I am by no means a professional camera man but I love taking BW photos with my cell phone.

Excellent review. I've got the same sort of outlook on lenses as you. I wanted a Leica forever, eventually got one second-hand and had decided a bag full of non-Leica lenses would be more interesting to get used to a rangefinder again (last time I used one was back in the 1970's!) than trucking about with a single rather expensive used Summicron for £1700? I'm happy but probably have too many lenses now! My own fault - turns out the Paradox of Choice (great book by Barry Schwartz) really does mean 'less is more' and I must sell some of them (do I really need the 35mm 7Artisans AND 40mm Voigtlander AND a 45mm Contax Zeiss in a Funleader helicoid, AND two surprisingly sharp Jupiter 8's (1957 and 1977) AND a 7Artisan 50m f1.1? ) all of which cost me - with a bit of luck and trading - around £800 or half the price of one used Summicron. 🤔

I was just about to say the same thing as the comment below by @derekr7814; Looks also like something is not light tight. I think if you gave it time and learnt how to actually understand this camera you would produce decent images. the eye piece is merely to give you an idea of the composition not the definitive image like digital.

Great review but I think you are pretty far off on the loading system. The take up spool is fantastic and allows no room for error (as far as the leader not catching). Once you are used to shooting an M3 or M2 with a take up spool it is a non issue and just as fast as an M4, M6, M7 or MP.
@jsshayes1 Жыл бұрын
Simple answer for me myself is yes (Sam check out my article "LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE LEICA M2" on Japan Camera Hunter). Complicated answer is all the M film cameras are fantastic. I think each person will have a different favorite because of subtle differences.

Nice video! BTW you can get and install a Quick load kits in the M2 so that you don't have to take out the film take up spool each time. I've put my first 5 rolls of film through my recently purchase M2 that came with the Quick load kit and loading it seem only a bit slower than loading a M6. Like yourself I'm really enjoying the single frame line viewfinder note sure why but having only a single fame line showing just make it seem bigger and brighter than the one on the M10.
