This film is surprisingly racist. One should feel sorry for the lovely Joan Armatrading for singing the theme tune.

I think one of the reasons this film resonates so strongly with us is that was one of the last films of its type. Came out in US in December 1978. Films like Guns Of Navarone and Where Eagles Dare were drifting into the past and being replaced by war movies with a difference mindset like Deer Hunter or Hamburger Hill. The saying "they don't make 'em like that anymore" is certainly very true. In 2024 just about everyone in the cast has left us. If you want to really get misty eyed, watch it now beginning with that fabulous title song.

A forgotten classic maybe because it was low budget and theatrical at times and a focus on cowardice rather than heroism, that makes it very unusual for the 1950's.

One of the most powerful scenes in The cinematic history. I don't even think most people even understand what Robert Schofield said.

A truly unforgettable film and another similar classic British war film is The Sea Wolves with Roger Moore, Gregory Peck and David Niven. They unfortunately don’t make films like these anymore.

I don'tknow why, but this opening title scenes & and soundtrack 'almost' bring a tear to my eyes...I'm watching this on new years day 2023, 00.15..and I must say, it's one of my favourite films of all time...I watch the DVD every couple of years. Stellar cast, and the last time we saw such quality together on the big screen, an absolut classic which should on TV every bank holiday instead of crap we've been subjected to for the past 30 years... SMH Anyway, a wonderfully poigninant and heart-moving movie about the post colonial Africa, the human condition and Britain's legacy...yes, political at time, but done so well, very relavent subject matter and as I mentioned, an absolute stellar cast of some of the greatest assembled actors of that era... Get hold of the DVD as it has some very good extras including footage of the premier screening in London... Part of my childhood sits alongside this movie...

Along with Roger Moore I noticed two other 007 connections. Maurice Binder designed the main title and the second unit director was John Glen.

It’s interesting how attitudes have changed from the 1970’s to now - a film like this wouldn’t be shown on TV today, nor would Zulu.
