One of the great lost war films. I saw it six times at the Academy Cinemas in Perth Western Australia, in 1978, as a 12 year old. I've watched it at least once a year since. I'm glad we're all keeping this film and JA's deeply poignant song alive, and "run like hell we're running out of ammo".

They made some great war movies back in the '70s: Patton, Tora Tora Tora, A Bridge Too Far, The Eagle Has Landed, Cross of Iron, All Quiet on the Western Front, Zulu Dawn, Midway, Murphy's War, Midway, The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, Go Tell the Spartans, Kelly's Heroes and within a few years of this movie Breaker Morant, The Lion of the Desert and Gallipoli. This film was truly unique in that it dealt with mercenaries and provided many very memorable characters, lines, and images that so many of us remember many decades later.

In the novel Allen Faulkner dies, and instead of Allen, it's Lieutenant Jeremy Chandos that killed Captain Rafer Janders so he wouldn't be killed or captured by the Simbas, Rafer along with Hammond, Rubens, Ferguson, McFarlane, and Williams provided cover for the other surviving Mercenaries, and at the last second as the plan began to start it's take off, they rushed for the plane, both Rubens and Williams where killed, and Ferguson wasn't mentioned as killed or alive so is MIA, and Hammond was killed on the runway under gunfire from the Simbas, Janders and McFarlane survived and (differed from McTaggart in the movie) McFarlane was wounded in the chest and is rescued into the Dakota while Janders misses his own chance to climb onto the plane and Chandos is forced to kill Janders so he doesn't fall into the hands of the Simbas, How does Faulkner die in the book you might add he is gravely wounded and Regimental Sergeant Major Sandy Young remains behind with him and both are killed after setting off a grenade, Also you might ask what happens to McFarlane, it is unknown if he was able to survive his chest wound but he likey survived though it wasn't confirmed though, The survivors are, Jeremy Chandos (in the book survived), Shawn Fynn (severly wounded unknown if he recovered), Sergeant Benson (in the book survived), Sergeant Tosh Donaldson (unknown if he recovered from his wounds but where fatal so it's not confrimed if he dies or not or weather he was able to survive is unknown), McFarlane (survived most likely though it's not confrimed if he recovered from his chest wound), Julius Limbani, (survived in the book), Samuels (differed from film but he's younger in book dies of his wounds), they was also a female nurse whom forced Jeremy to come with her to assist wounded, it is also unknown weather or not do Sergeant Patrick O'Leary and Volunteer Mercenaries, Clark and Scouse Jones, and Roberts as do weather they survive the story or not was never revealled but they likely survived though it wasn't mentioned at all so they're possibly alive which we have to assume, the other mercenaries we know in the book where Sergeant Jock McTaggart dies in a different way sucidally charges at the Simbas (then in the film died of his wounds on the Dakota), Medic Whity (in movie spelled differently as Witty) yes he dies, also I don't recall a Mercenary named White in the story so when it was placed in Whity's place it was a typo by Daniel Carney that was, they're was a different Williams by the name of Taffy "Taff" Williams he's one of the few first Mercenaries to go down in the book, so I have the book at home and read it all. From the film the only characters absent are Sergeant Jesse Blake, and Sergeant Derek (which our actor Roger Moore revealls the name at the Dakota scene) and he boards it with him as starters, plus Mercenaries, Keith, Esposito, Samuels (different guy), ajnd Alexandra and the two McTaggart confirms Finchley and Gennaro I think in that story where absent from the book that was,

I served two tours as a United Nations Peacekeeper in Kosovo from 2001-2002 and it was him and this movie that made it all possible ; there is nothing more honorable and virtuous than the life of a brave soldier who risks his body and soul for the safety of our world.

I don'tknow why, but this opening title scenes & and soundtrack 'almost' bring a tear to my eyes...I'm watching this on new years day 2023, 00.15..and I must say, it's one of my favourite films of all time...I watch the DVD every couple of years. Stellar cast, and the last time we saw such quality together on the big screen, an absolut classic which should on TV every bank holiday instead of crap we've been subjected to for the past 30 years... SMH Anyway, a wonderfully poigninant and heart-moving movie about the post colonial Africa, the human condition and Britain's legacy...yes, political at time, but done so well, very relavent subject matter and as I mentioned, an absolute stellar cast of some of the greatest assembled actors of that era... Get hold of the DVD as it has some very good extras including footage of the premier screening in London... Part of my childhood sits alongside this movie...

I think one of the reasons this film resonates so strongly with us is that was one of the last films of its type. Came out in US in December 1978. Films like Guns Of Navarone and Where Eagles Dare were drifting into the past and being replaced by war movies with a difference mindset like Deer Hunter or Hamburger Hill. The saying "they don't make 'em like that anymore" is certainly very true. In 2024 just about everyone in the cast has left us. If you want to really get misty eyed, watch it now beginning with that fabulous title song.

A friend of mine reckoned the biggest expense for this film was the drinks bill for Richard (Pontrhydyfen) Burton and Richard (Munster) Harris. Actually think that Stewart Granger has a real gravitas yet is only on screen for so so short a time.
