If you can keep it going, no injuries and get to the start you will be close. I missed a sub four at 50 years old on three runs a week, which was not enough plus only three 20 mile training runs, a pulled hammy and also due to the 28-30 degree heat in Edinburgh a few years ago just bad weather. Trying to get fit to do a bit more at 62. All the best. Stay motivated

Hard to say if it’s too high as we’re different and have different training backgrounds. However, 180 for 22/23 minutes seems on the high side.

There is never any luck with running, it's all about putting the work in and getting the results you rightfully deserve. I can tell from just following you for a few months that you have the will power and the right attitude, it'll all be mental on the day but if you put the training in you'll be surpised what might happen, keep it up ☺☺ Thank you for the video

Hi - I am in a very similar situation to you - aimed for a sub 3.20 marathon last outing (my GFA time) , had let the basics drift a little - came in in 3.24 and had a really awful day - one where you question why you take on such challenges. However, its the process I love, and if you follow your knowledge then the growth happens. Its not magic, its a process. So, I am using the parkruns as a lose benchmark, and doing my reps and tempo runs, with a long run - and aiming for a couple of Autumn half marathons - always an honest race distance to really show you where you are. I have subscribed and look forward to seeing your progress.
@run.msc19753 ай бұрын
Thank you so much. It sounds like you have much of it worked out. I think, as you say, that it is important not to let the basics drift. Good luck with your own journey towards your goals. Thanks for the sub 👍

Keep the videos coming. Lots of similarities in your story and words for me as I’m sure there are for many others out there. I have run several sub 3 hour marathons, my last being before covid but need consistency back. With a family, I have struggled to put a consistent block together and training seems to fall away after a month of being good and with no events in the diary, motivation ebbs. Injury has been a problem for me in the past, particularly aged 40+ I did try to ramp up my volume in search of a pb sometimes but as soon as I got into 60+ miles per week territory I found myself getting injured. Looking back I suspect there wasn’t enough variety in my training and the majority was at far too high intensity with no strength work. Consequently, my body would always fall apart in the lead up to a marathon. I found the high volume would also reduce my enjoyment in the process at times. Mid week long run in Britain in the winter anyone? I ran my best marathon on sub 50 miles per week and have always felt there was a far better marathon in there somewhere. Maybe, maybe not. I would be interested to know, as a fellow vet, whether you will substitute some of that mileage for Cross training or whether that would be on top and also what strength work you will be doing and when. I look forward to coming on the journey, hopefully not always from my sofa!
@run.msc19753 ай бұрын
Consistency is everything isn't it. I think that you've got to the heart of it: finding the maximum volume that you can utilise and absorb without breakdown. It seems like you've identified the fact that too much of that volume was at high intensity and this is definitely something to avoid. I think that there is absolutely a place for cross training. I ran my strongest marathon while training for my first Ironman. Swimming helped to give me a very strong upper body and I felt as upright at the end as I did at the start. I think cross training for running becomes very useful once we've found what the maximum volume we can handle is. At that point is can become a great way of increasing overall CV volume without risking injury, I will be doing strength work. I do a weights session each Monday in the gym and then further body weight exercises at home throughout the week. Nothing complicated, just basic movements. All of the research demonstrates how important this is as we age. Good luck with everything! Exciting times ahead.

Hi Marcus, I was just thinking the same about leg strength and heart rate, I'm 68 now and have trouble getting my Park Run heart rate up above 140 and I'm not puffing and blowing like I used to, legs feel dead, so can't push any harder, I've started doing hill work again to see if it helps, Great vid B.T.W enjoyed that, sounds like in a few months you will be back at the front of Park Run.
@run.msc19753 ай бұрын
It's a tricky one this. I find that when I lose fitness, it is always at a muscular and neurological level first: I simply lose the ability to fire muscle groups in a coordinated way at speed. This affects me far more than the loss of cardiovascular fitness. You are right because I find that hill work, strides, leg strength work all helps. In time everything seems to click back into place. Good luck and keep on running!
