I’ve been on the Helix for most of this year and love it, but I am very curious about the AFx, so I bought a used one that’ll be here this Thursday. I gotta defend Helix here though-the I/O is superior to me because it’s a one-stop shop as an interface…It processes vocals too. MEGA important selling feature there. Axe Fx is purely for guitar. Processing power is one thing, but what do the real-world tones sound like? Ive yet to see one video of the Fractal that just blows away the Helix. They are neck and neck as far as my ears…you hear some people with fantastic tones and some with god awful ones from both devices. So for me, that isn’t what got me curious. Instead, it’s the deep parameter editing capability and the breadth of amps that favor my music style that really got me to pull the trigger on the AFXIII. I can’t wait to see what the fuss is about. But as it stands, I’m remaining a skeptic of it until I get it in my hands and see if there’s a legitimate enough of a difference in feel (more importantly) to justify the significant price difference between the two. Helix has insane value as-is I hear a lot of complaints about the tones on the Helix and some of it is warranted-it’s not an easy device to get realistic tone out of the box. That was actually my first thought when I pulled it out…the stock presets are terrible, the amps dialed-in by default are (usually) terrible. You gotta work with it, but it’ll take you there for sure. One thing I urge people to remember with the Helix is try not to strip all your high end away with your patches because they can get really dull really fast that way and kill the feel. Take the high-cut on the cab block for instance. It doesn’t just cut the highs, it actually reshapes the midrange and lows too and, like I said, if you go too hard on it, you miss out on some really important frequencies in terms of overall fidelity of the patches. Your ears might like those super dark tones at the time, but give your ears some rest and come back to this patches…chances are you’ll find them a bit flavorless. Or similarly, put them in a mix, you’ll find those patches usually don’t cut through or have enough definition, particularly in the low register of the guitar

The red of the burst is far too wide and solid for my liking, IMO the red of a burst should be thin and fade into the black, looking on Andertons and Guitar Guitar websites they no longer do this guitar or any of the other £169 Tele models. Im not a fan of the low profile Tele bridges or the saddles, I prefer a traditional ash tray bridge and brass compensated saddles or the six mini brass saddles that are fully intonateable. I suppose the pickups could be potted, its easy enough to do.

I do find the Lithiums to be bright and biting, but the Holdsworth and Beryllium pickups aren't bright at all. Someone recommended the Holdsworth for jazz, but the Beryllium is a better match as it has more midrange. Their active pickups are pretty good, not shrill at all. The good news is that pickups are relatively easy to change, so experimenting isn't all that onerous.

This song was recorded with 100% Kiesel Holdsworth pickups: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHTHhIOqqMuDY8Usi=eVJ1HCoIjXUxgOfU They are super articulate but not bright and I tend to like dark amps for distorted sounds and bright amps for clean. Compare waveforms and transients. I like fast transients TBH so even with a dark amp it doesnt lose articulation. For me Holdsworths are that special pickup Ive been looking for all these years.

I only use free captures I’ve found on ToneNet. Do I believe that everyone has access to amazing sounding vintage and rare amps to capture? lol no! 😂😂 Do I think that people are saving paid captures and changing the names and sharing them? Well yeah… Can this be policed using current available systems? Well no. I fundamentally agree with preserving the sanctity of the paid capture eco system, but people have been sharing stuff since year dot. It’s no different to putting a mates new Metallica album onto cassette in the 80’s. Or recording Ghostbusters onto VHS and keeping it for years… It’s wrong but it’s so common I think it’s impossible to stop.

First off wish you had used some different pickups in the neck as only the Beryllium and Fishman are true neck pickups. I have run the EMG 85 and the Air Norton both in the bridge, which is where they are recommended. I have a EMG 85 in the bridge with a H60A in the neck of a guitar now. Now to the pickups, bridge favorites were the Illusionist, JB and the Fishman on voice 2. Have run every pickup in guitars at some point you tested, but the Fluence set. Neck Beryllium and the Fluence. Voice 2. I would have preferred the Beryllium bridge to the illusionist, as I have found the Illusionist to be a little bland sounding. My favorite Kiesel Combos are Beryllium or M12SD bridge with a Frank Gamble neck or a Holdsworth set. Own 8 Carvin Kiesels and am half-and-half between Carvin Kiesels and Duncans as of now.I like the Beryllium neck for some things, but find them a little dark for what I'm doing right now. I like the Kiesel Alnico pickups a lot as well as any brand I have used overall but not so much the Ceramic mag pickups I have tried. I prefer the JB to the Illusionist over all, but the JB can be really fickle. Sounds fantastic in one guitar, but awful in another. The Illusionist is more forgiving. Hope this helps.

I have Beryliums in my soloist and love them. Your comparison was well done. The Kiesel's were my favorite. The Fishman's were not to my liking at all. The first had to many highs and the second was too muddy for my taste. Cheers from Tennessee!

First of all: the internet is , excuse my Greek, full of sh*t. Back in the 90's/00's, EMG's were all the rage in terms of pickups, then suddenly the internet decided that EMG's suck and hopped on the Fishman Fluence bandwagon, now almost 10 years later, they start trashtalking on them.... Second: the majority of guitar players, are too dumb/too lazy to be bothered with learning how to dial in an amp, specially how to properly use EQ settings & use a tone knob. ( well, at least those who have a tone knob). Yes, I said that. Third: You see pro players like Jamie Robinson, Stel Andre, Al Joseph or Sophie Lloyd, using Lithium humbuckers and getting great tones out of them. Hell, Sophie Lloyd uses Lithiums in her guitars, while playing sold out stadium concerts with that Squirtgun Kelly guy or whatever his name is. Philip McKnight has stated that the Lithium is his favorite bridge humbucker. And last but not least: a lot of what you hear in terms of pickup design is marketing BS, like when PRS came out with their 57/08, which were made with the original wire & winding machine that Gibson, used for the original PAF humbuckers and what not. There's no such thing as a "magical Alnico magnet'' that will give your guitar the ultimate vintage toane or something. And that concludes my little rant.

"pro players like Jamie Robinson, Stel Andre, Al Joseph or Sophie Lloyd" Sophie Lloyd is a pro player? Odd, doesn't seem to tour or appear on recordings as a session player, etc. Social media influencers aren't quite what most people in mind when they hear the word "pro musician", as if a few KZbin videos are the same as playing in the Boston Symphony.
@greekfreak1980

@uvicjames Thank you for confirming, that the majority of internet guitar players are idiots. And yes, Sophie Lloyd is a pro touring musician, as seen with her playing tours with that MGK guy. Just as guys like Al Joseph, who has several studio albums, he's also a guitar instructor just like Stel Andre. Or how about Frank Gamble, you may not know him, he's just an amateur./s Buy hey, Shreddy McBedroom Shredder 69, who visits the Seven string & Gear Page forums every day, knows better... For him, only the finest boutique gear will do.

First, the ease of string change is welcome. I cannot even change a string on the new Floyd Rose. Secondly, that is exactly where the volume knob should be for harping. Which I do all the time. You put your pinky on the knob, tirn it off, strike a note, and roll up volume. Repeat. What I wish is I could get it scalloped. Mine is here Friday!
