I am annoyed by this theory. Killing a creature with no weapon, skinning it with no knife, stretching out the skin, drying it, and then sowing it into a bag with a needle and thread sounds way harder than grabbing a stick and hitting something with it. We'll just ask Mr. Cro-Magnon man to build a loom with no tools before having anything to eat. He will understand the importance of being able to carry many berries as opposed to what he can just carry in his hands, as he is a very reasonable kind of guy who understands the need to be sensitive about phallic objects. Not like some ape like creature might grab a branch and have it break off in his hand and hit something with it before letting it go. Complete nonsense. You need a carrier bag, sir.

From the short story the movie is based on, Louis learns that the Heptapods need a big favor from the Human people, in 3000 years. So they are now giving humans the tools to survive that long, and then make the request which is a non request since it is not at all specific. But since they can't really see that far in the future, it gets murky and indefinite. They only see a need and that humans can help.

I noticed that the squirrels and chipmunks around my house which is in the coastal forest of Oregon, climb the evergreen trees and then drop the seed cones to the ground and then gather them up and put them somewhere for food later when its winter. They will often store food in their mouths until their cheeks bluge. It's winter now and a squirrel comes on a brush pile with a seed cone and busily eats it with the chaf flying off. He is a very plump and well fed squirrel. Shows that a bunch of seed cones gathered up will keep you alive through the winter. I bet bags were very important to premodern humans and maybe more important than the weapons for killing. Today we have too many killing weapons for the government states but maybe we should have bags instead?

The question of taste in the first instance lies in the singers’ vocal vibrato, which (to the delectation of these al fresco philistines) is slathered onto the music like whipped cream on sponge cake.

Nice, come to learn about ideology. Get an ideological anti capitalist ideology, criticizing such, while at the same time making content to aquire capital for ones self. Capitalism is simply the idea of economic liberty and the ability to cooperate with one another, Capitalism has essentially broken down the power dominance hierarchy of feudalism and dispersed the power to groups of people with common goals, giving great power to even the entrepreneur. You have the freedom to choose to be a cog in the wheel or forge your own destiny, no one is forcing labor. It's voluntary cooperation at it's root.

This is a cool idea. BUT, when it comes to organizing, governing, and managing (schools, businesses, politics, etc) there needs to be solutions and policies, and those solutions and policies have to be arrived upon based on reason and logic via debate and constructive argumentation. This sort of postmodernist stuff is hitting colleges right now and it’s super annoying. Studying English Literature in college nowadays is like attending a book club where people just share their feelings instead of dissecting, analyzing, and making claims about Literature as a whole. This idea is great, however, for interpersonal communications and conflict resolution. Ultimately, I think a good balance is nice. We’ve been an overly masculine country forever, but some people are trying to shift to full-blown feminists ideologies which have just as many flaws as patriarchal ones.

One line of code tells the computer to create a red dot on a screen. Millions of lines of code give you a word program that can do spreadsheet applications as well. Billions of lines of code married with dense 2 or 5nm chips, you have the basis of neural network. Now use fine fiber optic cable and quantum processing chips with advanced learning AI algorithms. You reach the level of processing indistinguishable from the neurons that make up the human brain. Complexity breeds more complexity until like evolution you get an animal capable of conceptualizing his or her environment. Not just the instinctual reactive brain but a brain that changes factors of survival moving the probabilities in their favor.

I come back to this video often, and continue to be grateful for your thoughtful and detailed analysis of canon. As someone who has written fan fiction for as long as they can remember, I’ve always had a scepticism for the concept of canon. While an author’s ‘moral rights’ to their own intellectual property should be protected to an extent, it’s essentially impossible to write a wholly ‘original’ work and so asserting authorial rights and ‘canon purity’ so often slips into gatekeeping.

What a delightful and thought-provoking treatise (though verbal instead of written) on the underlying theme(s) of this movie. While I am educated and (theoretically) of above average intelligence, I found much of your video over my head - and yet I still loved it. I'm a little sad that youtube's algorithm has tucked this gem of a video into a dark and dusty shelf in the back of the archive, only grudgingly serving it up to those of us who have watched two dozen other, lesser videos on the film. Only 62K views in five years? It is deserving of so much more. And less than 2K likes? Perhaps I am not alone in my deficit of understanding... Ahh, the problem of language - of communicating - of communion - indeed... Thanks again for making this video.

You have Narcissistic Personality Disorder bro. Calling out capitalism whilst using methodology and technology derived from a meritocratic society is projecting what one fears being called the most onto other people aka a "bully attack". In your case, you are using passive aggressive methods, which makes you a covert narcissist. Entitled much? Don't answer, it's a rhetorical question.' Hence: you are a particularly nasty ideologue!

My one grandma (moms mom) gave me the first few Harry Potters books I was living with my other grandma (dads mom) and she was super religious. We went to private school, etc. I never got to read the books because my one grandma threw them away. Then my other grandma died. So the last thing she ever gave me was taken and destroyed. Still kinda bothers me.....

I find your point about the etymologies of the word understanding interesting. As human beings we attempt to become one with concepts and ideas we are communicated and in communicating we invite others to do the same. The fact that we are able to speak and understand each other at all is a miracle. And I believe this desire to communicate our ideas denotes a deeper desire to communion with others beyond speech, a communion on the level of our being.

I loved and will forever love Mulan; as a girl who also never really fit with extreme femininity or extreme masculinity I get that struggle of looking at both options and not knowing where you lie. I tried both and it felt unnatural on each extreme, but like Mulan I learned to just embrace the me inside of me. There's so many things I share with her, I felt beyond represented in this movie. Joining the military for my family, taking care of my father, being southeast asian, sex roles, growing up in an extremely misogynistic home etc etc. I watch this movie when I start to feel alone with my struggles, I want to be more like Mulan :)
