I'll be running into you if you show up for fallout days in 25'. I'm trying to get a little cart going to offer pip boy repairs/mods/"unofficial fan art" sales. Like a modified out house on a tricycle or something funny. Bring my whole lab. I think I can squeeze an rtl-sdr and a cc1101 on a board with a real Geiger tube (found a few small ones 1/4" x 1" LND 712 is one for like 20 bucks at electronics gold mine). A BME 688 would be a sick integration as well. And I'm working on getting map tiles to display as images on an esp 32 for GPS. Coral has some AI accelerator chips that could also fit on the larger pip boys. AI assisted radio and atmosphere scanning. The sky is the limit!

BTW, this phone is very close to being indestructible. I actually broke my screen. It wasn't because I threw it down the street. It wasn't because I ran it over with a track hoe. It wasn't because I used it as a hammer to tap a center punch. No. It was because I left it in my tool bag and dropped a wrench from the top of a 12 ft ladder right on the screen. And the way it broke makes me want to buy another. It just has a single crack and it's still fully functional. Unihertz is a fine company. The keyboard is proprietary. Unless you do your own firmware for the keymapping, it's quite the project.

It's not false advertising, that's for sure. 350 bucks is a huge swing for a prop though. But, it does make the prop fully functional and useable as a daily driver. I don't recommend buying it just for the screen and keyboard though. There's cheaper ways.

OK. Prove to me you can make the exact same thing for less than 200. No one has shown me they can so far.

Not even the Wand company could produce a single one for 200. They need to run them in batches to bring the cost down to where it is. Just the abs injection mold and accompanying extruding machine is in the thousands. But each part cost only what the plastic, electricity, and time in production. We are talking a single dollar here. The circuit board alone would be 200 for a single prototype, but 5 bucks when ordering 5,000. To answer your challenge honestly, yes, I can produce a single pip boy for 200 better than what they are selling, after I make 500 pip boys to cover the cost of equipment. Mass production is key to cheap consumer goods.

@sloppyfloppy79 the other aspect is that Chris and his team always thin their profit margin by adding more and not recouping it. The other factor is this pipboy was created to be open source and support a sort of app dev tool for people to contribute and create what they want.

​@@YourGeekFixoh Chris needs to make a living doing this. Nobody is entitled to his labor for free. With that said, a 200 better pip boy is one that "I" could make myself after making 500+. That isn't what I would sell it for. I use the rule of 3's for my business model. 33% set aside for taxes. 33% to cover cost of product. 33% for me. I know Chris is only making a few bucks per pip.
