The baby coots are so cute.

This family has 6 goslings that were born on 4/5/2024. There are images of the other two Canada Goose families on my Instagram account (mark.nv). An Instagram ID is not needed to view them.

TIP: Since there are no marked trails to follow when the ground is covered with snow ... one option for guiding you to Chickadee Ridge Summit (from the Tahoe Meadows South Trailhead parking area) is to use your cellphone's Map application and type in Chickadee Ridge. Then press the Map icon that indicates your location. As you hike in the direction of the ridge ... you can check your location periodically to make sure you are still pointed in the correct direction. The elevation gain is about 300 feet, and the trip is about 1 mile each way. Use the same process to get back downhill to your vehicle if you parked by the Tahoe Meadows South Trailhead. (When there is no snow, hikers are required to stay on the marked trail. Since there are a number of trails in the area ... an app, like AllTrails ("Chickadee Ridge via Tahoe Rim Trail"), is very helpful in keeping you on the correct path, or showing you alternate paths that will also get you back to your starting point.)

More snow possible on Monday.

Looking forward to more snowshoeing after the weather clears ... but would hate to have to be driving in the mountains with all the snow and wind for the next couple of days.

Snow Geese: 1 adult, 3 juveniles.

This was one of the 3 domestic ducks that were abandoned on the East side of the Marina about 3 or 4 weeks ago. A few days after they showed up ... there was a single egg, but none of the three seemed to be tending it. A couple of days later , 2 eggs were seen a few feet away from the 1st one, but again ... none of the three seemed to be paying attention to it. About a week ago, there were at least 10 eggs in a different spot nearby. The brown duck in this video can normally be seen sitting on the nest. (While the other two wander off, exploring.)

Galena Creek Trailhead ...near Callahan Park ... on Callahan Road ... off of Mt. Rose Hwy (431) ... just up the road from Galina ... but not as far as the turnoff for the Galina Creek Visitor's Center.😊

For nine years I looked for them In a orchard area with a lot of water area nesting sites.Lots of red wing blackbirds. I heard the yellow headed blackbirds often. Can't miss that song. All the years later I looked out at a bird feeder in my yard. A adult male and a fledgling.

This looks like a fun place to bring the family. I have never heard of it.

The 1st mile of the trail itself, starting from the Galena Creek Trailhead on Callahan Road, is currently hard-packed ice. Best suited for ice cleats, but snowshoes might be better if you want to go off-trail in order to go further than 1 mile or around a spot where the trail has thin ice over water.

Colusa NWR includes a 3-mile Auto Tour (no getting out of the car). Sacramento NWR includes a 6-mile Auto Tour that also has 3 Park & Stretch spots along the route.
