During the last couple of weeks, a number of new baby birds have been seen. Most of ducklings that were born in May and June have grown to the point where it is harder to tell them apart from the adults ... but now there seems to be an increase in the number of new families. Not only baby ducks, but also baby Coots and Pied-billed Grebes. The increase might be attributed to the decrease in the number of Black-crowned Night Herons that are currently hanging around the Marina ... since they tend to be a threat to bird eggs and to young birds. The Pied-billed Grebe family was keeping their distance from the heron on the dock ... but the mother (?) continued her lessons with her young. (She would show them how to spash water to bath themselves, and then they would copy her.)
