I sometimes wonder why Verdi wrote such difficult music for Violetta in the first-act. Perhaps this was requested by the soprano who sang the premier of the opera. I hope an expert will read this and explain and offer an explanation.

I met her in the 2008(ish) timeframe, and she is a delightful woman. I try to see her live whenever I can. I've seen her at The Met in Tosca, Norma, and Medea, at Carnegie Hall in recital, in San Francisco in recital and in New Orleans (where I met her). She is my absolute favorite soprano. Her tone and delivery are consistent. Her range is among the best. I love, love, love her.

Sondra is a very exciting singer to listen to and one of the best current singers. However she never developed a chest voice which is essential to having a full and balanced voice. Callas, tebaldi, caballe, freni all had balanced voices. Yes they had imperfections, but they were superior to current singers. Saioa Hernandez, is a current singer with a balanced voice but she too has flaws. No agility and nowhere near the nuance of the great singers of the past. However, we have to enjoy what we can.

Thank you. Is it perfect? Possibly not as written. Does it convey the tragic story as Schiller intended? Of course. Donizetti wrote this as a vehicle to make us weep at the injustice. Does it? No doubt about it. People should listen with their hearts not their heads to this full blooded heartfelt interpretation.

Most of my source of opera was from PBS, Met HD and DVD fro Met since I am from the cultural desert, southern California so I never even know of Ms. Radvanosky before the pandemic. @beachfanatic2010
@beachfanatic2010 5 жыл бұрын
It is because your ear is NOT trained. The voice is large but thin and that is BAD technique. It results in high larynx which happens to her a lot. You want to hear a real Spinto voice? Listen to Renata Tebaldi. She was very developed! A real Spinto voice, lol and she actually considered herself a lyric soprano NOT a real Spinto. If she would listen to what people call Spintos today she would die altogether and go back to her grave!

@@beachfanatic2010 I'm assuming you're a follower of that "This is opera" channel. I've learned things from that channel myself, but find myself unable to dip into its quasi-religious fervor that defines good singing and good technique in virtue of one very specific ideal. My ear is perfectly fine, and I hear exactly what you mean when you say that Radvanovsky isn't a true spinto and doesn't have a sufficiently developed middle voice. I just think that there's more to life and art than just applying rules mindlessly in the evaluation of singers.

Your guess is as good as mine. Marketing and popularity is an odd thing. We must find what we think is good and grasp it, and ignore what is bad. The world is unfair to great artists, but at the very least this lovely soprano has had an international career and there are plenty of recordings out there of her. Remember that Callas and Sills both had incredibly difficult times with the Met due to politics.

I'd say that Ms. Netrebko cast a spell on the Met in "Puritani" in 2007 and it created a mystique. A mystique that she hasn't been able to live up to but people still worship. Her New York Times reviews by Anthony Tomassini usually find something to heap a lot of praise about her performances even if he'll state she's uneven for the evening. Perhaps wonderful Ms. Radvanosky is more particular about how much and what she sings thereby preserving her instrument, unlike Ms. Netrebko? Based on her talent and output I don't think that So-Rad wants the kind of career that A-Net has in part I think by healthy choice. So-Rad, and American, moved to Canada for citizenship and lives ion the suburbs of Toronto. while A-Net opts for the more glamorous trappings of New York and Vienna. Also, I wouldn't say that So-Rad has difficulty at the Met. Check out this curtain featuring her at their closing Aida performance 2029. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4SmmqFmoc1mj6s

@@chocolatesouljah I don't trust Mr Anthony Tomassini opinions.I had a pleasure to attend same performances at Met as he and when Radvanosky,Caleha,Florez created Magic ,Mr Tomassini wrote terrible reviews.But when I left with friens in the intermission since it was just terrible ,out of tune not even close to any good school performance with Netrebko ,Mr Tomassini wrote fantastic reviews. As for 2007 with Netrebko it was in my opinion more about her beauty as a woman not as a musician.She was and is far from caliber of Sondra Radvanosky talent. It is a real shame that 3 Qeens of Donizetti with Radvanosky are not available on Cd and DVD.It was just UNBELIEVABLE!!! So why Met is not sharing it? It is a true shame that our time Maria Callas when she was and is in her prime ,is not more often invited to MET. Sondra Radvanosky creates magic because she can. She brings eternal beauty to her every performance!.She has not only a wonderful,great in color and scale voice but she is a virtuoso in using it with all nuances of dynamics,articulation,human emotions and always perfectly in tune.What is more amazing for beauty of music ,she will hide or use half of it not to cover her partners. Sondra Radvanosky is our time Maria Callas and yet she is not often at Met.Why?

BigAppleDuo hi there, don’t get me wrong. First of all, I don't know why La La La La Sondra is not at the Met more frequently. And to be clear, I looove Dama Radnovoska. It’s funny u mentioned Ms. Netrebko’s looks because after I wrote my post I forgot to mention her looks played a role in her rise. So u touched on that and I agree. If you go back and read my comments I’m suggesting that it’s possible that Ms. Radvanosky seems more discerning about how much she sings and what she sings and when she is ready to sing. Unlike Ms. Netrebko who sings way too much, wrong repertoire and the strain is showing. So in my mind, if Ms. Radnavosky is that the Met less but that means she maintains her beautiful instrument then it’s still a win. Or does she prefer playing in Europe and Canada to great acclaim? I’m just saying that she is no stranger to the map she debuted there in 1996 and was in Tosca and Aida in 2019 there. I hear you are wanting her to be heard more but pretty well in my book! Lastly, Maria Callas had a dispute with the Met’s czar at the time Rudolf Bing, someone known for his uncompromising viewpoint. So, I’d say that was also a personal standoff and Ms. Callas was distracted with Mr. Onassis. She did return eventually (when Mr. Onassis started to fizzle) and sing Tosca with Mr. Bing’s approval. It was her last season on the operatic stage. What a loss! My point is though, I think Ms. Callas issues may not compare with any perceived issues that wonderful Queen Radnovsky may be experiencing at the Met,
