I a new owner and enjoy learning from you thank you keep up the good work
@Member-el4zo19 күн бұрын
It's a manual method but connecting the top and bottom lugs of the isolator with a switch or plug connector will charge both batteries when on shore power as well. Most connector plugs have an linline fuse so you have to disconnect it or it will blow when staring the engine. The combiner is more convenient though.

It's 3 years later, time to get a LIfepo4 maybe? That's what I'm thinking of doing.
@MrGMCMotorhome21 күн бұрын
I actually just installed new 6V golf cart batteries this year. I may do LiFePo4 batteries in the future if I end up doing solar. For now I didn't feel like upgrading my charger or other things for the different battery technology.

Great video, did you end up buying another new tank to fix your mistake?
@MrGMCMotorhome25 күн бұрын
I ended up using the tank I had, I was able to do some "adjusting" when putting it together and made it work. I figured if it leaked or had a problem later, I would get a new take and redo it then. We used it all summer with no problems so I think I might be okay!

@MrGMCMotorhomeАй бұрын
Wow, Great question! This is our first year with the macerator and I forgot to do anything with it. I put antifreeze down the drains so I think I'll just turn it on for a second to get some in the macerator and it should be fine. Thanks for saving me from a broken macerator in the spring!

The GMC is such an amazing motorhome. Thanks for making these videos. I will try to import one to Europe in a couple of years and do a restomod, converting the powertrain to tesla, problably a complete transplant to keep all the functions of the tesla working. anyway, love to see these videos, thanks again.

I’ve tried dryer sheets in the past without much luck however, I can always try again. They’re cheap and I have them on hand. We live very close to acres and acres of rolling wheatfields so the mice are abundant in our area.

How much for the RV and total cost and time of renovation?
@MrGMCMotorhome2 ай бұрын
Great question. We got our coach for about $18k. It was fully operational, drivable and useable but needed some work and updates to make it more reliable and comfortable. In money spent in our now almost 4 years of ownership, we have spent about $13k and probably 200+ hours of labor. I have done most of the labor myself so our total cost would be much higher if I was paying to have all the work done professionally.

@@MrGMCMotorhome Ouch...I think I'll go with the teardrop and/or sprinter build. The sprinter will be my man cave when not in use, and I plan to make it modular so that it can be reconverted back to the passenger configuration to take over a dozen family members on a road trip. The tear drop is good for a family of two, or four because my SUV sleeps two in its folding configuration.

Flexible solar would be of great benefit. No mileage penalty like rigid panels. There are ways to continue with a/c and Microwave type typically managed only with shore power to run on big battery systems. As to running air all the time, inside reflective shades could reduce your reliance on A/C. A 12v a/c unit could keep up with the heat if you had decent tint and reflective shades where you didn’t need windows.

It's interesting how we choose our projects... there is little similarities between many of them... on my purchase, I wouldn't buy one without a working generator, working ac unit , recovered seats, it had new tires, new exhaust. The work I did the first year was , a new black tank, new floor, new headliner, and repaired the front cap.. Mac dash, Dakota digital Guage cluster, joying 10.5 android head stereo navigation unit, 4 camera backup system wyngard wifi extender, recovered dash, toilet repair, kitchen tap, all new wheel bearings and brake inspection, master cylinder. Timing chain. New radiator, water pump, Furnace repair, new gas regulator. All this before the first trip.. 2nd year painted the roof and top half of the coach Green with a gold stripe.. new led roof lights, sealed the seams and new vents.new vair air pump. New front shocks ,Rebuilt alternator, new power steering pump, new belts and radiator, new clutch fan, hoses. 3rd year, got dash air system working, microlevel level system, new ball joints, inner and upper control arm bushings, rear slave cylinders, rear brake shoes, aluminum air bag cones (one broke) 4th year, Corian counters, carb rebuild. New alternator again. This year, new motor, new fuel pump, intake block off , carb cheater system.. next year , dual 375 amp alternators to run roof air on highway, soft start, serpentine setup, new ac pump, new power steering pump... larger trailer hitch, electronic e brake, w possible disk brakes on rear.. and I'm looking for a buddy seat.. I'll say at the end of this.. I did most of this myself , lots not mentioned here.. I know I could never spend as much as I would lose on a new rv.. the gmc is a great rv.. it's not that the parts are expensive, it's that it needs so many parts..
@MrGMCMotorhome3 ай бұрын
It sounds like you have a GMC that is in great condition with lots of important things done. I hope you are enjoying it! And, Yes, the value of new RVs drops like a rock at least the GMC RVs don't go down in value if they are well maintained.

Very common problem on these. My '78 403 kept blowing exhaust gaskets on my cross-country trip. The bolts do indeed, loosen up after an install. I'd check them each time I go out, at least for the first 4 or 5 trips. Don't overtighten the bolts: 25 ft. lbs. is the book value on those. Finally, I have gone with Dave Lenzi's all-copper exhaust manifold gaskets. They are much talked about, and I'm happy with their performance.
@MrGMCMotorhome3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment and your experience! I wanted to get the Dave Lenzi copper gasket but Applied was out of stock at the time and I wanted to get the repair done. I hope mine lasts for at least a few years.
@fraserwright94823 ай бұрын
I would also add that you should also look at heat management, if one area of the engine is getting hotter than the others then this causes distortion. Be that poor combustion, valve seating not taking heat away to the head. Over fuelling or leaning out all cook parts and although the mantra of "they all do that" the question is why don't other cars have chocolate exhaust studs? At the moment your only way to know is the color of the plugs and how it performs, but these can be detrimental to the engine itself. I would want to know why a half inch thick 'Murica cast iron log manifold cracks rather than treat this as a wear item. Personally I would fit a Holley sniper or similar bolt on fuel injection/closed loop lambda with electronic ignition in the future.
@shaneharvey38253 ай бұрын
Until the bolts and gasket etc settle in, the bolts on the Olds 455 will loosen up. The recommended routine is to tighten to spec, run the engine until hot, retighten when it's cool. Repeat two or three times. Last time I did this the bolts definitely needed to be tightened the first two go rounds, finally just a little snugging on the third. This would be when I would cinch over the retainers. YMMV. Thanks for the excellent content for our coaches.

Just a thought. In my 60 plus years tinkering with exhaust bolts. NEVER have they vibrated out. I am suprised that a locking mechanism was included. The bolts get so hot, which makes them swell, (Which makes them Tighter) My personal opinion is that a locking mechanism would make it harder to get the bolts off in the future. But I have been wrong from time to time. 🙂

If you're not already on it, the GMCMI forum has a lot of GMC'ers with tons of experience that could answer your questions about Duracool, etc. Also, you probably have a leak and would benefit from adding some dye to the line and looking with a UV light for the leak(s).
@MrGMCMotorhome3 ай бұрын
Yes! I've been a member of GMCMI since we got our coach almost 4 years ago! They are a great resource and I always do research on the forums and in the original manuals when I'm doing a project. However, some of the discussions ramble and there are lots of opinions so at some point I just make a decision and go for it and see what I learn. It's been a couple of weeks since I did the recharge and so far it's still working. I'll see how it does over the winter, if it leaks out again, I'll do some more troubleshooting.

Hey, I just noticed, you don't have the blanket box as a head board. Did you remove the box, or did a PO remove that box? You're 6'2" and you fit. I'm 6"7" and I do NOT fit with the blanket box in place. I didn't notice, do you still have the foot 'box' in place over the genny? If you've a vid of how you removed the blanket box could you provide the link please. Also, the bench panels are obviously higher than what is now a platform where the blanket box was. How do you lift your pillows above the plane of the bench/mattress? Thanks.
@MrGMCMotorhome5 ай бұрын
Good eye on the missing box. A PO before the person we bought Edna from removed everything in the back. Our PO got new benches but no head or foot boxes. I have just made a simple flat shelf where the blanket box used to be to cover the LP line, furnace duct, and wiring. The shelf is at the same height as the folded down bench and a bit below the mattress we use. This gives about 9-10" extra space to the wall and we put some pillows there and have lots of room. I put a vertical board on the drivers side to take the place of the 'foot box'. At some point, I plan to build new boxes on both ends to make it look original and not have rough boards and exterior walls. If you decide to remove your boxes, I may be interested in them. ;-)
