Been using NixOS on my laptop for a bit to see how it fares next to my current distro of choice, Fedora. So far, Blender with HIP support for AMD GPU rendering just works on my gaming laptop, while I couldn't get it working in Fedora. I'm still going to use Fedora in a distrobox container for coding and game development tasks, but Nix has been pretty solid for me so far. I just need to figure out BTRFS subvolumes, a solution to back up my system files to a 16TB external hard drive of mine, ROCM with Davinci Resolve, Secure Boot with GRUB, Clevis TPM disc decryption, and a few other issues, and I should be able to try Nix on my desktop. Regarding Wayland support on NVIDIA, the latest NVIDIA drivers makes it usable finally. Seems like that's going to be the way forward if you want VRR and HDR. I heard that GSync (on NVIDIA cards) is usable on X11 and back when I had an RTX 3070 I didn't have an issue with that, but AMD and Intel has a suboptimal hack for it which just gave me problems, and makes it hard for me to recommend something like Mint Cinnamon (where there's no Wayland support) to someone just getting started with Linux.

I don't play such a large variety of games, but I would say that 99% of what I need, I can play (looking at you Assetto Corsa), even if it requires a tiny bit of tinkering. For some years, Kubuntu was the 'just works' distro for me, but after that I switched to Arch and I still don't have issues. I would say that Wayland + KDE + Nvidia Optimus laptop is still not an option for sane people, but I don't mind sticking with X11 for a while. I do, however, think that Linux gaming is a thing and was a thing for some years now. And every contribution counts to make it even better, even just having a Linux gaming machine, if you cannot find bugs and such. Add to the numbers.

So agree with you, Just have to know, and or at least listen to those that know on specific Distro's. like in my case on any flavor of Ubuntu, either you can with the Live USB disk get into grub first and press the E key to edit, and after either nosplash or splash then with a space type nomodeset and ctrl -x or F10 to boot. Then Once you get the OS installed and reboot again back into grub lol and repeat. I know kinda annoying. But you'll thank me, especially if you don't set the nomodeset at grub. Then of course 2 options either you can right away install NVIDIA drivers through, on Ubuntu its "Additional Drivers" and install then, or update the software of the OS and or upgrade to newer releases first and once entirely done, making sure you do that nomodeset at grub setting during whole upgrade/update of OS. I haven't done many distro's but its got to be very similar. Do not go to nvidia website to try unless if ya the hacker type then hack away at getting those to work on your PC, trust me its a lot more work and complicated. I tried it once, did I succeed Kind of but it wasn't perfect, so yea had to remove it and do the former usual way.
@alphaobeisance3594
@alphaobeisance3594 2 ай бұрын
The above video is regarding NixOS, not Ubuntu my friend. That said. Yes, good advice on the nomodeset for sure. You can install NVIDIA proprietary drivers on Debian based systems (like Ubuntu) with the 'nvidia-dkms-535 ' package. So whether you're adding it to the additional packages list during the installation from live USB, or if you simply install Ubuntu and run ' sudo apt install nvidia-dkms-535 ' via terminal after boot, proprietary drivers are easily installed. Never install from NVIDIA website. NixOS operates entirely differently, but installing the nvidia-proprietary drivers is done similarly through the nix configuration file instead of via terminal (unless using a terminal based text editor ofc). If I misunderstood your context I apologize.

Every time I install the propitiatory drivers, the resolution of my monitors tanks, and there is no way to configure the resolution in NVIDIA Control panel or the display settings. Linux supports EAC, VAC, Battleye, FairFight, Punkbuster and so on. I've played Apex Legends, which uses EasyAntiCheat by EA. Battlefield uses punkbuster or battleye, I don't recall but I know both have support. If I recall, Valorant uses Vanguard and is not supported but it's been a good while since I've looked into that, so it may have changed. But last I knew Valorant is unplayable due to the anti-cheat deployed by RIOT. I looked up Fornites anti-cheat and apparently it uses EAC, so it's literally at the fault of Epic Games for not enabling the Linux support within Fortnite to make it playable on Linux. (This is something they CAN, and HAVE done in many games, but Fortnite is their cash cow, so it's unlikely they'll do so). I looked up COD's anti-cheat and they use their own propriety anti-cheat called "ACT" or "anti-cheat technology" and I've played several COD games, including Warzone. Check www.protondb.com for game compatibility. The database is rather dated, and I find the ratings don't properly reflect the play-ability of games today as it's improved so greatly over the past 3-4 years that it's just impossible to have a legitimate rating without wiping the old database and building a new one with new reviews.

Just tryin to help =). Gaming on Linux has reached a point where it's no longer about technical limitations, as the systems run games just fine. So good in fact that I pre-order games frequently (Baulders Gate 3, STALKER2 being most recent), and I don't do so lightly. Being willing to preorder major titles like that with such confidence that they will run speaks volumes as to how far Linux has come in terms of technical capabilities. And while last year was HUGE for Anti-Cheat support on Linux, there are still some big anti-cheat players out there that refuse to enable Linux support (the support generally exists, but devs don't always enable it). So the only people who really end up hurting on Linux are those that are wholly committed to playing games that either haven't had their linux anti-cheat support enabled, or in a few niche circumstances, don't have support at all (like Denuvo). It's really like any other gaming platform at this point. Can't play Playstation or Xbox exclusive titles on opposing consoles, and in the same way some games just wont play on Linux. Thankfully though, games playable on Linux far outnumber those unplayable. Thanks for commenting! I enjoy the conversations!

What i really want to say is the real awesomeness of NixOS doesnt come until you use dev environments and all such things.. I would recommend learning a language(apart from nix language, lol) like Python and giving it a go in NixOS. Once you understand it completely, you'll know its a boon to developers!!!

NixOS has been spreading like wild fire through the linux community. I gotta say, i understand the appeal. Just loaded up Endeavor on an old laptop that was laying around and it's been great. But all this NixOS talk is making me want to try that out on my home server. Had Manjaro on their for the last 4 or so years and it's had multiple instances where the order updates are provided breaks the system in a way where it will only update if i remove packages first and then do the update and manually re install said packages. Idk what on earth they've been doing, but if NixOS is really as good as people keep saying, I'm going to have to make the switch soon.

It's definitely the forerunner in any considerations if I were to leave Arch for sure. I use Proxmox for the homelab's hypervisor and Arch on all the personal rigs. I plan to be diving into some NixOS VM's here soon so I can get better acquainted with it. I installed it on hardware to see how it would perform, and once I got the display situated it was really smooth, even with a novice configuration. Once I understood how that configuration worked, it was really nice to be able to go to one location to manage the system environment and rebuild in a matter of seconds (figuratively speaking). I'll definitely be bringing my NixOS experiences to the channel as I get into it. Just got my first rack so I'm in the middle of re-configuring everything to my liking 🤌

Hey there! Just switched over to NixOS just today and working on getting it all set up. Coming along pretty well, but I seem to be having some trouble with my Nvidia drivers in Krita. Noticed you have the program in your install list, so I'm curious - are you having any trouble with flickering with hardware acceleration turned on in Krita? And, even better, do you have any idea why mine is doing this or how to fix it? This is really my main problem right now. The whole UI flickers black, and overlay elements like the brush picker when right-clicking seem to zfight back *behind* the canvas. Seems like some kind of buffer problem, then, right?
@alphaobeisance3594

I would first try disabling hardware acceleration in krita by going to Settings -> Configure Krita -> Display -> uncheck Enable OpenGL or at least tinker with the OpenGL settings. Wish I had better advice atm but my kids are all over the place this AM lol

@@alphaobeisance3594 It *does* work to solve the flickering. Unfortunately, I'm quite picky about the experience of panning/rotating and it's awful without hardware acceleration (my processor is terrible, to be fair). @@alphaobeisance3594 So you'll probably find this funny like I did. I've read every horrible thing about Wayland and Nvidia compatibility, but switching off from x11 to Wayland removed almost all the flickering. Now occasionally there's a little blip - mildly annoying and definitely worse than it was on my Windows install. But, it works, and is fairly performant! Seems like Wayland support is catching up rapidly on Nvidia (probably because of Steam and Proton, as I understand it?) So I'm hoping it'll get even better in the coming months.

My limit is a basic DOS-era autoexec.bat file to load up a simple text file that listed a bunch of other .bat shortcuts to help a user get started, when I was eleven years old :P

Not sure what kind of woes you're referring to when you're configuring kde plasma. All settings that live in your user home directory are configured in nixos exactly the same way how they're configured in every other distro (via the UI or manually). There's home-manager that actually takes care of that and allows you to edit user settings declaratively as well, but I really advice against using it for beginners, because it's just too much. So you should absolutely be able to change your kde plasma wallpapers via the right click config UI of kde plasma, you should not have to configure anything in the configuration.nix for that.
@alphaobeisance3594
@alphaobeisance3594 2 ай бұрын
I'll have to re-watch as I don't recall implying that kde plasma couldn't be configured. I meant to imply that most configurations could not be configured in .config but instead had to be configured from the nix directory and they're seemingly not labeled as would be expected on most any other districts. I recommend NixOS to anyone looking to learn that has the self drive required to do what reading is required to learn. As with anything. Gotta want it.
@Alexander_Sannikov
@Alexander_Sannikov 2 ай бұрын
@@alphaobeisance3594 no, my point is that you CAN configure kde plasma and most other packages in ~/.config via their GUI and not via configuration.nix. Everything in your home directory can be configured the way you're used to. There are some plasma configuration options that you can access from configuration.nix, but you don't have to use that at all. All user configuration options are available with home-manager, but you definitely don't need that early on.
