Then they followed w/ the homophobia the aids quilt then of course racial issues as i mentioned which also was weird of hank too as he married nora & rachels background was diverse. I remember hearing about this storyline in high school (I started watching in September of 1993) and I remember arguing with my Dad and defending Powell, saying he really didn't want to do that (the rape) and my Dad went off and yelled"but he did!" Then my Mom had to remind us that it was just a show.

I think it's crazy that head writer malone thought getting gang raped makes u a better person or something. Marty was a wacko who did horrible things to innocent people. Why does being gang raped elevate u to sainthood? I understand it gets u sympathy & of course I feel horrible for her going through that but does that make u a better person ? I mean I know the behind the scenes that malone wanted to get susan an emmy & to redeem Marty as she was the town pariah & he loved the idea of " the girl who cried wolf " but did it have to be a gang rape ? I think malone had a serious rape fetish. Every year w/ that guy some sort of sexual depravity was his major storyline. Marty says andrew is a sexual predator of a gay teenaged boy. The next year a gang rape which is really a shocking disgusting thing. Rape is bad enough but a gang rape is just really sick then the next year the serial hospital rapist & his final year viki is raped by her dad starting at 7. Incest & pedophilia on the towns matriarch. What was gonna be his encore if he stayed? He covered everything. I'm surprised he didnt write in that todd was gang raped in prison. Their was hints at it when todd told his therapist the other prisoners were roughing him up. They brought malone back in 03 & notice roger bounced again. He quit the first time b/c he hated how malone was making todd a hero & of course wanting to pair todd & marty. What was one of malone's first storylines? Mitch raped viki ! I mean really. Then it was faux todd raped blair. The guy has issues. I remember watching some soap talk kinda show & a caller said to the host after powell was carted off " man I'm really getting sick of all this rape stuff. Can the show lighten up a little ? " I think that was everyones thoughts & possibly why malone was let go. Plus they wanted roger back b/c when he left in 95 the show lost tons of ratings.

The beginning of Todd & marty. The one night stand that led to a ride to hell! She could not get over him leaving & he couldnt stop obsessing on it. This was 2 young crazy people that was like a tornado vs a hurricane. They did look good together. A lot of chemistry that sadly got wasted. All malone wanted was 3 guys to be villains to redeem Marty for the homophobia lie she started. He organically or accidentally created an iconic character in Todd. Roger wasnt heavy but he was heavier here b/c I could not put my finger for so long why in 94 he looked so different I think he lost that baby faced school boy look lost a lot of weight & it defined his features. Hes so gorgeous!! Funny hes so preppy here w/ the sweater over an oxford but he really fits in later w/ the longer hair & scruff to the grunge period & youthful angst of the 90s. When hes on the run he turns on nirvana 's serve the servants & I just thought omg perfect! I miss the 90s Back to this scene todd really was taken aback by this girl who acted all cool & sexy sobering up crying & begging for him to cuddle in bed w/ her. I think he regretted it as he brought it up over & over even when he went his peak in pychotic at the tabernacle when suede died. Let's be honest if a girl that's some acquaintance literally says come home w/ me & it gonna be sex the guy isnt gonna really respect u . That's why todd gets confused when she starts freaking on him everytime she sees him.

Yeah Todd definitely fell hard for Marty. You see it leading up to the rape, the way her constant rejections ate away at him. I'm not sure how capable of love todd was at this point but I think it was probably the closest thing to it that he's felt up to that point. And as weird as it was to see Todd and Marty be more comfortable around eachother later on , I do have to give props to the writers for finally addressing what Todd was feeling towards Marty back then. I remember during one of the group counseling sessions people were hammering Todd asking him why he raped Marty, he shut down and never answered. He finally answered the question later on by the fire with Marty. The Todd/Marty story is still one of the best soap opera stories I've ever watched. Very brutal, very complex, very layered.

Marty was right todd was at first just more screwing around & then a switch flipped in his head & he was so angry. How horrifying w/ the kids all partying while a horrific gang rape is going on. They wanted to show how out of control & carnal college kids w/ booze can get. God I hate this. I watch & turn right at the rape. It's too upsetting so they had balls malone wanted a gang rape bc a one one one had been done so this made it like Holy crap ! They really went there?

The writers did something brilliant here. Accomplishing 2 major things. 1. No matter how bad a womans reputation is if she parties drinks takes home strangers she gets wasted & kisses a guy at a party ( where a photographer took pics I assume for the trial later not that that was the purpose but knowing Marty was gonna be raped those pics could damage her ) she got up & danced on the pool table going wild she never ever deserves to be raped. 2. Marty is known at this point as the town liar. Just the year before she spread vile damaging lies that andrew was gay & was molesting or having sex with an underaged gay boy , billy douglas ( ryan phillipe) so the writers loved this idea of the " girl who cried wolf " she told horrible lies fresh in the towns mind , could she just as easily be lying again? Oltl was so fantastic. They had so many thenes such character driven instead of plot driven stories. Malone & Griffith ( who I think reigned malone in b4 he left in late 94 ) loved old movies & old literature. When todd was all banged up after his prison escape with the scar the bruising & dark make up around his eyes he looked like mary Shelly's Frankenstein. Nora throwing the trial was cape fear , todd stalking blind nora in her house was an homage to " wait until dark " that was even her clue to bo that she was in trouble bc they watched old movies together. He loved gone with the wind & luna was his melanie. He even had a blair ( scarlett) death bed apology & tears on lunas bedside. Also he had todd as a publisher like citizen kane. Vikis d.i.d. was like the 3 faces of eve & sybil. Just great storytelling. Something lacking in soaps starting around 98. Malone also loved the " turning of the tables motif" like when Marty was Todd's alibi that would clear him of the hospital rapes she sat on it til todd almost pleaded guilty. One of my top 5 all time scenes ever was when todd was locked up & she gloated she was never going to be his alibi . She said " u like ur creation todd. Now ur helpless & I have the power. Ur hands are tied theirs a sweat band in ur mouth how does it feel to scream & nobody can hear u ? " then my favorite todd line maybe ever that I know ur by heart " vengeance is mine sayeth marty.
