The Lick observatory made their reticles out of spider webs as well. I forget the species they used but it lived on Mt. Hamilton. I have found a lot of good gear on Cloudy Nights used. Several of my Televue Eyepieces and my Baader Zoom EP were purchased used, for 30% off the new price. Some had never been used or only rarely used.

In theory, yes. However, it's somewhat fragile and might flake off with temperature changes. Also, it would be very expensive to paint the entire inside with Musou Black.

Do you have stock in painters tape? Wheels con/360 circle con/level con/handles pro/CD disk sub pro/those disk need the raised area around the hole removed so the disk can ride on the whole disk and not the raised ring in the center. I removed the ridge on the disk and stacked them as needed on my 8 in dob and you can move it with your finger tip of your little finger. Lots of good ideas but a lot of over kill also.Learn where things are and you can scratch some of these projects.I was getting a thin cresent glow of light in my eye pieces so I black out the edge of the 2nd mirror and the focuser tub and that corrected that problem. When I got my 8 in dob it came w/9/50 finder the next year they put that pain in the neck finer on the XT"s. great show just keep them coming...

I think the name changed worked! Just found your channel and love it. A while back, I picked up a broken Meade Telestar 114mm scope. It's a DS2000 series but I'm not exactly sure which specific one. It needed e few repairs and I also wanted to try some DIY upgrades to it. The mount seems to work although I think it could be better (a lot of slop in it). If you ever have a chance, can you open one up on your channel? I don't mind messing with a scope but the mounts scare me.

I don't solder at all. I split the end of both wires into two parts. Then wrap one part of wire 1 with one part of wire 2. Then the other part of wire 1 withe the other part of wire 2. I bent the one wrap to wire one and the other wrap to wire two. Finally I shrink-wrap the connection. No solder, no special connectors, just shrink-wrap.

So if it's single knob movement tracking, why are there two flex knobs?
@AstronomyGarage8 күн бұрын
The two knobs are used to get it precisely lined up initially. From that point on, you only need to use one to track the object.
@samgrieg7 күн бұрын
@AstronomyGarage sorry for not being clear, not the two for the initial alignment. What is the purpose of the fine adjustment flex rod at the very top of the mount? It's not a worm drive, and seems to have limited range of movement, driven by push pin on one side that's counteracted by adjustable tension spring on the opposite side. What is the purpose of this adjuster? Thank you.

I know that this video is a few weeks old...but can you tell me what the diameter of the 12"dobsonian that you had printed out for yours? Now I know that not all are the same, but my 12" Apetura Dobsonian says the base diameter is 24.88" so I asked Staples and they said their limit was 24" and that i would need to try at another place. Did you take your protractor print somewhere else and if so, where? And, if need be, the person at Staples asked if I really needed to have it at 24.88" and could I get away with it being only 24"X24"??What do you think?
@Martillo_de_Dios8 күн бұрын
Sorry, I noticed that peoples comments are a lot older than a few weeks...is this a repost of an older video?
@AstronomyGarage8 күн бұрын
When I made the setting circle for my big 12 inch Dobsonian, the diameter was wider than 24 inches. Staples was able to print out the circle full size, but they could not laminate it due to the 24 inch limitation. I had to take it to a poster company that had a large lamination machine. They did it for like $10 which I thought was super cheap. NOTE: Bring a ruler when you pick up the print from Staples. On a few occasions, they have auto-scaled it down to something less than the full size print... and had to do it over again.

Well, there can only be one John Dobson. :) Dobson helped individual build their telescopes from scratch, all the way from grinding their mirror to final collimation. Jack had a different task. He had to come up with a robust design that performed well, was mass-producible, and could be sold at a profit.

Just curious, why did you use the heavier, nominally scratched secondary instead of the new one? Also, since there were voids on the secondary mount I was surprised that you applied the silicone to the mirror hoping to hit a solid spot on the mount rather than the other way around. Always look forward to your videos.
@AstronomyGarage10 күн бұрын
That's a very good question. There's two reasons why I used the original. I don't think the scratch was consequential enough to cause any visual problems. Second, the new mirror was actually thinner which would've meant the location measurements would not have properly transferred to the new mirror. As for where/how to put the silicone on, I think you may be onto something. Every secondary holder I've ever repaired was solid, so this one sortof caught me by surprise and I went with my "old set-in ways". However, next time I will apply the silicone to the secondary holder (especially if it has those crevices).
@knarf933510 күн бұрын
That didn't occur to me. The thinner mirror would shift alignment, so no sense adding a variable to the already solved equation.
