Does this faller know or even care about what species this tree was. I can tell by the bark that it is either sequoia sempervirens or sequoiadendron giganteum. If you're going to cut them at least have some respect. And this tree is small.

If the fallers were ONLY TOLD TO CUT SEQUOIA then no matter which sub species, then the faller is only doing their job!

Wow. I'm curious: when a person comes to a woodlot to figure out what the wood is worth, do they do a similar calculation? Also, what is the minimum cc you'd use on a tree of that girth?? Hope you're having a gr8 day Dan.

Hi Dan: I run a 2008 Ford F350 V10. Besides my 2001 Toyota Tacoma with 345k miles on it, the V10 has been my most reliable truck. Someone is going to get a good and reliable work truck.

I had something similar happen many years ago with a 30” diameter white spruce. It was tall timber, over 100 feet, and I was going to fall the tree across a leaner that had been partially pushed over by a dozer blazing a skid trail. The leaner was about 12” diameter where the bigger tree was going to hit and it should have either knocked it the rest of the way down or broken it off where it hit but instead, the leaner held fast, the big spruce I’d cut bowed over it hard and then as quick as you can imagine started sliding backwards in a heck of a hurry. The hinge had broken as it should have and the jagged parts caught the front of my coat and it picked me up like I was the leading edge of a 30” diameter battering ram. It carried me backwards and the right hand side of the butt caught another big tree and took a piece out of it and the impact of that shook me loose and I kinda flew off to the side where I watched it slide back until it stopped. My saw was laying in the snow up by the stump still idling. I had to do some checking to make sure all my innards were still in me but all it did was rip my coat a little where the side of it got between the butt and the tree it had hit. I worked as a feller for a couple more years after that and found a safer way to make a living. I did enjoy the work but I lost a couple very experienced co-workers to felling accidents over those few years.

Good because it went up the hill into its shot....and only bad if a guy does not get far enough away from the stump fast enough when it came sliding back down the hill.

How come you leave hinge on the compression side? Isnt that wood not doing anything and only hindering the tree from swinging? Also do you ever use a dutchman to have the tree rest as it goes into the face or do you find its not needed and just a sizwheel is sufficient? Thank you!
@norcaltimberfaller1943
@norcaltimberfaller1943 4 күн бұрын
The wood on the compression side should not be cut on a side leaner because it allows it to drop even harder into its side lean and very possibly break off into its side lean the moment a guy cuts that compression side to much.

Yes...its worth a trip if you ever get the chance. The Jacks range from about $2,000 dollars up to 3 or 4 for some of the bigger jacks ( double rams with the pump ) The jack I have was about 2,300 dollars...its a very good Jack...and yes...I use it a lot in the units with bigger timber. I still use it in smaller timber...but just not nearly as much.

@norcaltimberfaller1943
@norcaltimberfaller1943 4 күн бұрын
Well I suppose you have to be a little crazy to fall timber for a living. That being said...jacking timber up the hill is a very common thing and its what most landowners expect...versus down the hill into a bad piece of ground that blows the tree up. Down the hill is fine...if it has a shot. In this case...it did not. And side hill was not an option either.

The growth rings in that tree are nothing like an old growth redwood. This one grew very fast. It's so different when they get full amounts of light. By the way, I want to promote my way of getting redwood seeds. You wait till there is a big storm and the road is covered with duff from the trees. Along with the branches and twigs will be cones and seeds. Just us a landscape blower to blow all the seeds and duff into a pile. The seeds will be on the bottom. Send them to people that do tree planting for carbon sequestration. Redwoods are great for that because they grow fast and don't rot for 1000s of years. . Black locust is good too.

@@ev6558 hard to find a good animal equivalent for an endangered plant species that can live a thousand years - but perhaps the closest thing would be an African Elephant or Rhino. I’d argue no one should ever take one of those either. Hunting farm raised pheasant isn’t remotely similar.

@@2385Shane Redwood is not endangered, they grow like weeds on the northern Cali coast. Cut one down and six more grow back. You could maybe argue that old growth is endangered, even though I would disagree, but there are hundreds of thousands of acres of protected old growth that will never be cut. Redwood is doing just fine.
