Great video as always, some very interesting sessions. When I saw you do the 45k it tempted me for my next block. I’ve always wanted to do the full distance in training but didn’t know what sort of pace would be best, but your session was a good indicator I think! How do you feel about a 3x6k/20mins (6k ends up about 21km mins) @ fast end of threshold as a weekly session to include?
@Ryan.ThomsonКүн бұрын
Always glad to hear I’ve provided some inspiration. It actually was really fun. I find 20s/mile slower than marathon pace to be the sweet spot where it’s quick but doesn’t feel too hard. That sounds like a really good, HM type session like the ones I was doing almost weekly in my build so would definitely recommend it as a really good session. Honestly, if you can get over the monotony and a need for comparison, I don’t see much wrong with a session you do weekly. As long as it’s targeting what you want to target on that day, hard work is hard work

I don’t think you can go wrong with the canal. If you head towards Kirkintilloch from the city centre it goes for as long as you need and is dead flat. It’s where I do all my big long run sessions

Thanks Ryan, This is so helpful! I don’t do over the distance (27 mile) workout, but you inspired me to do a 24 mile long run during this block, and have done two 23 milers which I’ve never done before! (And one of those 23 milers I ended up averaging my goal marathon pace!🤯) I’ve noticed great improvement in my MP after these workouts and just that confidence that you can dig deep when you need to! I had one question for you! My last marathon block had its ups and down, and unfortunately I got a flu with fever the day before my marathon… Of course, I had to cancel my race, but have only missed one day of running (the fever day) during the 3-4 days of sickness and am now finally trying to get back to it with more volume and intensity. I was able to do “Dr Jack Daniels” 20 + min threshold yesterday and think that I’ll be able to do regular intensity starting tomorrow… I’m supposed to run another marathon in about 4 weeks and hoping that residual fitness I’ve built during my build for canceled race, before the taper, would help and I’m thinking to up my mileage for the next 2 weeks before another 2 week taper for my Feb 24 marathon. Given that I’ve lost some fitness during those 2 weeks of taper, do you think I should try and do another 24 miler this Sunday to “refresh” my cardiovascular system? If so, would you recommend I run it about 20 secs/min slower than MP? Thanks again and thanks for inspiration!!
@Ryan.Thomson21 сағат бұрын
Thank you! I would suggest that the planned 24miles is too close to the marathon in all honesty. When I’m at my fittest and have been training really well and consistently I do my longest run about 40 days out from the marathon. I would just try to get back to feeling good at marathon pace, you don’t need to prove anything in training or rush to squeeze anything in that you may have missed due to sickness. No need for any more than 20 miles and save the 24miles for the next block!

Great video, very helpful! I’m planning to try some of these workouts. However, recovery from harder long runs is a concern for me. For example, I’ve discovered that a 27K long run at marathon pace is too much for me; a half marathon at that pace is my limit if I want to train effectively in the following week. Instead of following a weekly training cycle, I’m considering switching to a 10-day cycle to allow more time for recovery. Do you have experience with this approach or know of marathon runners who use it?
@Ryan.ThomsonКүн бұрын
I think that whatever is going to let you get the training in is what’s going to be best. I know a few full time guys, a lot quicker than me, who “train when they’re ready and the weather suits”. I personally like my routine too much and stick with Tuesday/Friday sessions but if I need to go Tuesday/Saturday one week then it is what it is. Maybe try being a little more conservative on the paces. Marathon pace in Valencia in December isn’t necessarily marathon pace in the UK in February. Effort is key

I've seen other videos where people have trouble with the lactate meters in cold weather. Generally keeping it wrapped up and warmer should allow it to work properly! Nice session =D looked freezing!

@Ryan.Thomson7 күн бұрын
Thanks! Yeah I have a lot of these double days planned so thought I should really make sure I’m in the right zone. I’ve found it harder to judge the numbers than expected though and have learned that even your food intake can affect it. Not ideal

With the lactate pricking, if your currently doing it at a certain rotation ( think about a clock / circle) and finding it hard to get a good cut, try rotating the lancet 90 degrees. I think this will mean that you will go from a long thin cut to a wide one or vice versa, but either way one for me gave me a much better blood flow from the cut.
@Ryan.Thomson12 күн бұрын
Ah cheers! I am still very new to all of this but seem to be getting a better idea of what I’m doing!

Was just wondering what you think is a good sort of weekly mileage to maintain good baseline fitness between training cycles? I’m trying to do around 35 miles a week at the minute.
@Ryan.Thomson13 күн бұрын
It really depends on how many miles you're doing normally. I'm at 100miles in the training block and felt like I was losing fitness when down at 50-60. If you aren't overreaching in training then I don't think there's any need to be too far away from full mileage for too long. I'll be back around 90miles in the next few weeks with no plans to run a marathon until at least September

@mikehobbs62414 күн бұрын
Those reps were fast! How often do you hit a rep session like that in a marathon block? I used to do them every week, but it sounds like you hit them less frequently than that? Loving the content 👌
@Ryan.Thomson13 күн бұрын
Thank you! Yeah I did a 10K focussed block before starting the marathon block and then went 14 weeks where I focussed on purely half marathon and marathon type sessions. I found this left me feeling like anything quicker than marathon pace was really quick so did a variation of this session 3 times in the last 4 weeks and it helped a lot (the last one was 5 days out so that wasn't too hard)
@mikehobbs62412 күн бұрын
Thank you for your response. So you work on threshold far more than Vo2, only sharpening up in the last few weeks. At my old club, we used to race reps every week, which was probably far too often! 😏
@Ryan.Thomson12 күн бұрын
@ it also does depend on what you’ve done before. I came through the age groups running 800/1500/5K so don’t have that much scope for improvement by doing a lot of those sessions. If it’s a weakness of yours and your speed is what holds you back then you’ll need it a lot more often

Boring AF and hoping Troon parkrun provides some respite tomorrow. Take it easy, cheers.

My own training is only just starting to feel decent again this week after the Christmas indulgence. I did get out for a run on Christmas Day for the first time ever, really enjoyed it, and worked up a serious appetite for Christmas dinner! Definitely going to be a new annual tradition going forward. I'm also convinced that you run slower in the dark - my weekday sessions are all in the evening because of work and I swear I'm working much harder to hit the same paces I'd hit on a Saturday or Sunday morning run. Best of luck to Holly in the London marathon! Going almost straight into another marathon block after Valencia is tough work but no doubt she'll smash it!
@Ryan.Thomson16 күн бұрын
It’s a great thing to do and sometimes the best thing to escape the chaos for 30mins! That’s interesting. I assumed it was maybe because I don’t run in the dark that often and wasn’t used to it but maybe it is just a thing! She seems to have recovered well so hopefully she can get a good block of training in and smash a big PB. Will be nice to just be part of the support crew for a change!

How often would you change your carbons for A) Racing B) Training Do you move your racing ones down to training after a certain amount of miles?
@Ryan.Thomson18 күн бұрын
I only really get new pairs for marathons. I’ll train in a pair for the whole block and then before a marathon do 2 sessions (probably around 20 miles) in a brand new pair. For any shorter races I’ll just wear my best pair and for training I’ll just rotate through the pairs I’ve collected over the past 2 years. As long as they don’t have holes they’re fine for training!

Good video, cheers Ryan. I think i picked up an injury watching it 😅 would be good to see more of the dynamic stretching you speak of. I normally do a load of static stuff in my house before I go out. I do need to get more sports massage too. I normally go to the thai place in merchant city, it feels like she uses screw drivers and wrenches at times but it does get the tightness out of my calfs!
