What a wonderful human being you are! Can I fly over for dinner LOL. I drive to a park where I walk around regularly and discovered the crows there and feed them unsalted peanuts. I have since recognised how highly intelligent these birds really are. Every time they see me, they start cawing out to each family member that I am here. They all fly down to my feet from the trees high above and share the food. I have even gone incognito wearing hats and shades, and they still recognise me! One particular crow that does not take from this family in the usual area I feed them (or maybe this one is not part of this family) but this one in particular usually hops behind me or flies from tree to tree following me as it gets its treats when I sit on my usual bench and is not afraid to come closer to me each time. They even recognise my car as a two of them sit on the tree branch directly above my car, waiting for my return ❤ I have not received any gifts as yet may be one will drop one at my feet or in my lap, I would be even more amazed if this happened. How wonderul they say thank you with gifts and they are no doubt protecting your family in return. Maybe one day they will gift you a very old coin or piece of jewellery worth something lol. What a story this would make 😂❤❤❤

The last North American marsupial. They are not in the order of Rodentia, they have a pouch for their young just like kangaroos. They are Virginia Opossums and are originally found there, but have migrated all the way to CA. They do better in warmer climates although they are highly adaptable to urban and suburban environments. In the upper ranges of their territory, in like NY or higher, you might see them with damage to ears and tails from frostbite. They are beneficial to the area, and they do not shred garbage etc, although they will come and eat whatever they find after the other animals shred the garbage. They love cat food although too much protein is not good for them. They eat bugs, and ticks and berries and carrion. Yes, they have scary teeth. Those teeth do their job, which is to scare other animals away. They will first show teeth and maybe hiss. Then if you don't leave them alone, they will fall over and "play possum". This happens to them when they are scared. They fall over and look dead, and can stay that way for hours. They may emit bad smelling material from either end. This is how they end up dead in the road a lot. They are attracted by the smell of roadkill and then they are surprised and fall over in fright by oncoming cars. Having said that, any animal that is cornered may defend itself by biting and scratching. You should avoid causing this response in anything, including possums. Should you find a dead possum, check to be sure it doesn't have babies in it's pouch. If it does, call a wildlife rehabber. They can rescue the babies. You can rescue them and put them into like a pillow case or something like that, but you have to be trained to take care of them. Possums are called Didelphis virginiana which means double uterus and virginia. They've got double uteruses and vaginas and penises and extremely prominent testicles that hang off the body. This can help you if you find one dead or "dead" somewhere. If they have testicles you don't have to check for babies in the pouch. They have 13 nipples. They give birth to a large number of babies and whatever 13 get to the nipples are the ones that survive. They have 6 nipples on each side and one right in the middle. Unfortunately, they have short lifespans, about 3 years in the wild. In captivity I've heard of them making it to 8. One problem is that we're not sure what the optimum diet is for them. Far too many get too much protein which leads to a disease that kills them early. They really should be left alone, they will not bother or hurt you and they clean up pests. They're nature's sanitation engineers. Your cats will usually ignore them and they do the same. Dogs sometimes go after them so you should keep your dogs away from them. The dogs don't get hurt, but they can kill the possums. They are highly resistant to rabies. They can climb very high and the back feet have thumb like appendages. Their tails are prehensile and can carry things but they do not hang from the tails to sleep or anything like that. The prevailing wisdom was they were stupid. They are super ancient and haven't changed much since they were around 65 million years ago. They usually amble around and they do get killed a lot on the road. But now we are learning that they may be as smart as pigs. That means they are smarter than your dogs and cats. In captivity they will use litter boxes. They are clean animals, always grooming like a cat or a hamster. They may look dirty in the wild due to the environment. They can swim pretty far. We think they have short lifespans because they have a survival tactic of having many offspring, sometimes those things are related. Be nice to possums, they are easy to live near and they don't do damage. One thing they can do is climb gutters. If that happens you can buy something to put on the sides so they can't do that. They use other animals' abandoned dens, or go under porches and things. They usually move on after a few days. And that's your possum lesson for today lol.
