Dottie was left to die in the woods, when a woman came by and saved her life. She raised her like her own baby and released the deer when she was old enough to live free. But to her surprise, the deer had other plans.

My wife and I cared for a juvenile raccoon that had been attacked by a dog. We released her and she would visit a few times a week for treats. We didn’t see her over the winter, but during the Spring, she brought her 3 babies to meet us. That was 3 years ago and she still comes with her new babies. No words can express those emotions.

People sometimes say it's wrong to interfere with wild animals because it messes with what is natural in them. I say it is NATURAL for people and animals to bond often with those who are kind to us. This story is an example of this. Dottie was rescued and loved and a bond was created with the rescuer. This phenomenon IS part of what can be "natural."

Your post ignores a LOT of context. It's not wrong to rehabilitate injured wild animals (send it to rehabbers), it IS wrong to treat wild animals like pets because wild animals are unpredictable and dangerous. Also treating them like pets can dampen their survival instincts and aversion of predators like canines.

When I was a kid living in the country animals and birds were my best friends and companions (dogs, ponies and horses, a donkey, birds big and small, domesticated and wild) and I miss that terribly...the love and acceptance of animals and birds and sea creatures is the best. I once got the gift of packing so deep into protected mountain territory that the deer had no ingrained fear of humans and would eat grass at night right next to my head...I had to tap them on the nose to get them to let me sleep. I got to pet a baby grey whale from head to tail in the Gulf of Mexico too, and swim with dolphins in the wild...so sweet!

I remember decades ago. I was learning to drive. My mom was in the passenger side. It was dark and on this sort of back road. I spotted a deer way ahead on the side of the road. I slowed down and stopped. My mom said what are doing why are you stopping. I said look it's some deers. They walked across the road. If i hadnt stopped i would have hit them. One deer stared at me I stared back. It had it's babies with her. It walked to the driver side door with them. I just rolled the window down. Said hi mamma. Look at you and your little ones. It sniffed at me. I swear kisses my cheek or licked it. I think she was thanking me for not hitting her and her little ones. I said im glad i stopped. She walked away with her little ones. My mom said she had never seen anything like that. She said how did you even see them in the dark. I said I just pay attention really well. I waved to the deer's and drove off. I'm forty one and still remember that. The reason I never could hunt. I couldn't hunt and kill a animal. Would break my heart too.

I started a Greyhound rescue group in August of 2000 . It is now 24 years later and we are winding down operations because there are only a few Greyhound tracks left in the US. I spent thousands of hours and had over 100 foster dogs come through my house. I don't regret one single second of time I gave to the rescue of retired racing Greyhounds. The satisfaction i got from seeing them thrive in their new forever home is something that will live in me until the day I die. I cried every time I turned over one of my foster dogs partly because I was going to miss them but also out of happiness for them getting a new lease on life. I love stories like these and bless all those who help animals, both wild and domestic. Peace & Love !!
