It looks good but the spear is going to be much stronger if the socket sits on the outside rather than on a grade cut into the shaft. Have you tried making a socket by punching a hole into steel instead of rolling it into shape? I recall another blacksmith doing that and it looked pretty clean

very nice and simple thank you so much it really is a great tutorial. I started blacksmithing last year, didnt have any tongs or a forge so started on smaller stock, like tiny stock, practicing cold forging, andsometimes using mapp gas with a couple of bricks made some small tongs and other things, tongs i made using the old school technique you know, jaws first then turn and boss and then turn and reigns. had just build my forge the other day but got a sledgehammer head for an anvil, on a tree stump, started making proper tongs yesterday, from 1cm by 1cm square stock, going ok but hard work on a sledgehammer head. i made the first tong but now i see this video, i may go out and get me a flat bar like yours and do what you did, drawing out the reigns will be fun and good practice too, and dont need tongs to do it, so that will get me a nice set of tongs using your technique and then i can make the second tong the old school way. what size stock are you using is that 3/4 inch by 3/8 inch?
@ShrekMeBe13 күн бұрын
Nice! What are those scales falling out when hammering? I mean, the bar was already industry forged so I guess of good (homogenous) quality. The flakes are from metal oversaturated in carbon from the coals in the forge, and become brittle because of that? In fact, I am wondering if in traditional forging, hammering is a purifying process, removing impurities by repeated shocks breaking away links not strong or homogenous enough?

Is there a reason these types of knives's sheaths have that "L" shape? It's the style, and it looks good, but is there a function to it too?
@zakisworkshop21 күн бұрын
it is both because it looks good, but the L shape also make it easier to grab the sheath and pull the knife out when you a wearing thick gloves in the arctic brother :D

Great job. Just one question though. Wouldn't it be better to put the oil on the entire pole before you put the head on? I think that would protect the part inside the head from rot.
@zakisworkshop22 күн бұрын
thank you brother :D! no it wouldn't work so good to put the oil on first , because it would make it hard for the epoxy to grip the wood , and you don't need oil where there is epoxy, because the epoxy seals the wood :D
I really wonder what they used to cut the metal with in the old days. Does anyone have any info on that?

beautiful spearhead, but that socket taper looks far too short for the length of socket you made. I think you are going to have a gap between the end of the shaft and the beginning of the spear's base. Won't that risk the spear deforming under force, causing the tip to skew from its original position over time? Then again, if you aren't actually stabbing that spearhead into hard material over and over again, it probably doesn't matter much.
