Ice fishing sure has changed since I used to ice fish with my father as a kid 45 yrs ago...I miss those days. Battery augers didn't exist. For early ice, my gear is ice picks, rope, bucket with hatchet inside and my rod case, holds four rod and reels plus side pouch with small tackle box. Rod case has a sling for shoulder carry like a rife sling. I never take electronics or auger out on thin early ice. With early ice fish are active, aggressive and on the move, in other words they come to you. Also, early fish are still in the shallows and have not moved to the deep basins for the most part, allowing you to fish close to shore.
