I fully agree with you about the scent of salted meat being foreign to the fish in the Great Lakes. I've been toying with the idea of catching a bunch of Alewife, cleaning out the guts, and then blitzing them in a food processor, and freezing in ziplock baggies to take out on the water, to use as a scent dip for my spoons and flies. Any thoughts on this? In my mind, it would have to smell like real Alewife, and probably mask my human scent?

you mentioned colors. And we played with it a bit but we're still noobs, same colors on same side to start out. If a color catches, do you change other lines out to match? When mixing flies and spoons, are you all spoon on one side and fly on the other. Or do you have them go on certain lines, like down rigger, boards or dipsy divers. Cheers, much appreciated. Watch your videos twice already lol
@mvpsportfishing

Yes every bite you get is a piece of the puzzle. You can learn from every one. Weather that’s depth speed lure color ect. As for mixing spoons and flies I run them wherever I see fit. I don’t not limit them to sides. If I have a certain lure going on one side I will try and mimic it on the same rod on the other side.

awesome video. Lots of minor things that make a big difference, made a lot of sense to me. Women catch more, is gonna be the motto on our boat this year. Not sure why Im setting hooks like I got an actual whale. I never considered reeling in the slack on the cannon, or loosening up on the diver as well. Doesnt matter as much what lures Im using if my gps speed and direction arent correct. Every year has been better for us, learning wise. Cheers to yall who keep giving out the pro tips. One goofy question, do you sharpen hooks or wash your lures?
@mvpsportfishing
@mvpsportfishing Жыл бұрын
I personally do not. Sharpening hooks can’t hurt but you don’t lose fish because the hook doesn’t penetrate you lose fish because of wearing a hole in the mouth or twisting of the fish. As for washing your lures I don’t use any scents so I don’t wash them at all. I can’t imagine that putting soap scent on them is better than whatever small scent they might have from my fingers. That being said I’m very careful I don’t have gassy greasy oily hands when touching lines and lures

Starting my 48 season fishing, salmon, lucky me! I very much enjoyed your comprehensive listing of the things not to do. We agree on everything that you presented. I would add one thing. Everyone says keep your rod tip high but that’s not for me if the fish is on the surface. Get the rod parallel to the water and sometimes I’ll actually stick the rod tip in the water until the fish calms down. Looking forward to your next video. Wishing you luck in this year‘s tournaments.

Not trying to copy your set ups, but it would be interesting to hear what they are. Usual trolling speed and range at the ball? Fly leader length from end of loop to end of hook 8” finned rotator( not spin doctor)? Length of Leader material on lead core and copper? length of leader on divers and size of line. Length of leads off riggers. Vertical spacing in between riggers and how many you run? Why fluoro on boardline setups? Thanks and looking forward to your next video. You do a fine job.

Worst pet peeve here: A rod gets bit, someone grabs the rod and reels a little and then stops reeling to look at the rod tip to see if the fish is still there. Just keep reeling! If you don't feel anything, keep reeling as fast as you can until you see the lure. If the fish charged you, you can catch up. If he missed it, reeling in fast gets you re-set quicker.

I really like your videos, the way you explain yourself is easy to understand and make sense. One question for you do you replicate what you run on each side. Like one side all leadcore line and the other side copper lines. We always do things different and now I see it can make the difference.
@mvpsportfishing
@mvpsportfishing Жыл бұрын
No I don’t do that. I run both together on a side. You just have to run the shallower stuff on the outside and deeper on inside. But if you had a full assortment of both copper and lead it’s a good idea to keep them on separate sides. Easier to manage and not get tangled. If I was going to run a 5 7 and 10 color and a 150 200 and 300 copper I would have copper on one side and leadcore on the other. I personally don’t run longer leadcores and I don’t run short coppers. So I’ll run 3 color on outside then 5 color in middle then a 150 copper on inside. Or 5 color, 150, 200copper. Ect. I don’t use any leadcores longer than a 5 color and no coppers shorter than a 150. Makes mixing and matching easier. I’m not saying that’s the right thing but that’s something I could have added to this video. There comes a point you have to limit your how many rods you have if your on a budget or small boat so that’s what I did personally.

Stumbled upon your video because weather is Super crappy and my boat is stuck in the pole shed at my cabin and the forecast is for another 8- 12 inches of snow and high winds. 🤦‍♂️ Friends are catching Browns when lake allows it off the golf course and it’s killing me! Very nice video! West side of the lake we call it the Googan shuffle! I would add that when you get a strike on a wire that is leaking out through the water column to your desired setting that’s the one time I tighten the drag before taking it out of the rod holder to hopefully get a better hook set and then loosen the drag to get it out of the rod holder. Interested in trying the net pushed into the line to better control the fish that you spoke about! Thanks for the video!

Completely agree with your comments. I have run meat on and off for the past few years, and have a considerable number of 10 - 12" fish flashers, meat heads, Vegan rigs, etc. I used to purchase and brine my own herring, and was never able to get Meat to be as successful as my other presentations. I picked up some MC Rocket artificial meat strips, and was just as successful as with real meat. Your thoughts on why meat can be deadly in certain situations, and that it is more likely to be based on presentation than "real" bait is very interesting.

I troll with a Zuke 140, and typically troll between 2.5 & 2.7 mph SOG . I really wish I could install a kicker, and improve my low end speed control. In any case, I have been running 24'" FF leaders. nay thoughts on whether I should consider changing leader lengths based on my boat typical boat speeds. I do not have a Fish Hawk, but considering picking one up, for improving my repeatability.
@mvpsportfishing
@mvpsportfishing Жыл бұрын
I certainly think a fish hawk will help you. As for leaders there is no specific rule book that’s going to answer your question. What I will say is if your not happy with your overall flasher production then certainly play around and lengthen them out some and see if it seems to work better for you. Im guessing there are times when 24 works great for you. But if the down current is going the other way and your going 2.7 then maybe that presentation is a little fast. It’s just something that you have to play with to find the middle ground and what works best for you.

First off, your background is an improvement. I appreciate your comment on headlights at the boat ramp, as it is interesting to how few people think about anyone else. I have fishing Michigan for roughly 10 years, and am a weekend angler typically only running half a dozen trips/summer. I only run an 18' aluminum boat, but have very nice gear, Tekota & Talora setups. I have done pretty well over the years, but watch and read as much information as I can to learn more, as I still think of myself as a novice. I am considering a Fish Hawk, and curious about your thoughts in regards to its criticality of a piece of gear. X2 or X4 on a small boat. Any other thoughts on fish finder / transducer upgrades fro Michigan for people with a small boat? I currently run a HDS8 with SS.
@mvpsportfishing
@mvpsportfishing Жыл бұрын
A fish hawk is certainly a tool that will help you. Either from a repeatability standpoint for speed but mainly for understanding what the water temps are at depth. As for electronics, side scan is useless out in deep water on the lake. The avg transducers do the job but none of them are great. If your willing with spend 1k on just a transducer I’d recommend a large airmar transducer of some sort. Panoptics is a big thing the last few years thats gaining a lot or traction out on the lake for trolling. I personally don’t have it but I can see the allure of it for sure.

I personally have not used them so I can’t speak too much on it. But what I will say is everything else we use is fake and it works. I’m sure there is a learning curve with it to figure out how to tweak it to get the best results out of it like everything else. I’ve heard ppl say they didn’t like it compared to regular meat but I’m guessing they didn’t put in a lot of time to try different things with it.
