Everyone wants to talk about what to do to get the bite but what you do after the bite is just as important. Hook and land more salmon by doing a few of these things! No one cares about the ones that got away...

I love your last point!!! I have had guys do that and pull a walleye or salmon under a swim platform. I always tell them the person reeling is in charge of the netter … they should be able to tell the net handler when he is ready.

Worst pet peeve here: A rod gets bit, someone grabs the rod and reels a little and then stops reeling to look at the rod tip to see if the fish is still there. Just keep reeling! If you don't feel anything, keep reeling as fast as you can until you see the lure. If the fish charged you, you can catch up. If he missed it, reeling in fast gets you re-set quicker.

Starting my 48 season fishing, salmon, lucky me! I very much enjoyed your comprehensive listing of the things not to do. We agree on everything that you presented. I would add one thing. Everyone says keep your rod tip high but that’s not for me if the fish is on the surface. Get the rod parallel to the water and sometimes I’ll actually stick the rod tip in the water until the fish calms down. Looking forward to your next video. Wishing you luck in this year‘s tournaments.

First off, your background is an improvement. I appreciate your comment on headlights at the boat ramp, as it is interesting to how few people think about anyone else. I have fishing Michigan for roughly 10 years, and am a weekend angler typically only running half a dozen trips/summer. I only run an 18' aluminum boat, but have very nice gear, Tekota & Talora setups. I have done pretty well over the years, but watch and read as much information as I can to learn more, as I still think of myself as a novice. I am considering a Fish Hawk, and curious about your thoughts in regards to its criticality of a piece of gear. X2 or X4 on a small boat. Any other thoughts on fish finder / transducer upgrades fro Michigan for people with a small boat? I currently run a HDS8 with SS.

A fish hawk is certainly a tool that will help you. Either from a repeatability standpoint for speed but mainly for understanding what the water temps are at depth. As for electronics, side scan is useless out in deep water on the lake. The avg transducers do the job but none of them are great. If your willing with spend 1k on just a transducer I’d recommend a large airmar transducer of some sort. Panoptics is a big thing the last few years thats gaining a lot or traction out on the lake for trolling. I personally don’t have it but I can see the allure of it for sure.

Stumbled upon your video because weather is Super crappy and my boat is stuck in the pole shed at my cabin and the forecast is for another 8- 12 inches of snow and high winds. 🤦‍♂️ Friends are catching Browns when lake allows it off the golf course and it’s killing me! Very nice video! West side of the lake we call it the Googan shuffle! I would add that when you get a strike on a wire that is leaking out through the water column to your desired setting that’s the one time I tighten the drag before taking it out of the rod holder to hopefully get a better hook set and then loosen the drag to get it out of the rod holder. Interested in trying the net pushed into the line to better control the fish that you spoke about! Thanks for the video!

Yeah that is a good point about if you get a bite while your diver is creeping out. There’s things I forget about every video but there will be plenty of overlap and remakes I’m sure. But that’s a good call out for sure!

awesome video. Lots of minor things that make a big difference, made a lot of sense to me. Women catch more, is gonna be the motto on our boat this year. Not sure why Im setting hooks like I got an actual whale. I never considered reeling in the slack on the cannon, or loosening up on the diver as well. Doesnt matter as much what lures Im using if my gps speed and direction arent correct. Every year has been better for us, learning wise. Cheers to yall who keep giving out the pro tips. One goofy question, do you sharpen hooks or wash your lures?
@mvpsportfishing
@mvpsportfishing Жыл бұрын
I personally do not. Sharpening hooks can’t hurt but you don’t lose fish because the hook doesn’t penetrate you lose fish because of wearing a hole in the mouth or twisting of the fish. As for washing your lures I don’t use any scents so I don’t wash them at all. I can’t imagine that putting soap scent on them is better than whatever small scent they might have from my fingers. That being said I’m very careful I don’t have gassy greasy oily hands when touching lines and lures

Try the diver trick NFN got from his buds and popularized. I don't put a loop in the line though. Instead, I make a separate small mono loop connected to my main line through one of my micro swivel eyes. So far, it's worked great for me. Nice video! Thanks

How about a guy grabbing the net as soon as a fish hooks up and wants to walk around the back of the boat with it :-)
