In my opinion, he could have been an exceptional national captain. Batting has often been regarded as the superior skill in the Indian cricket, and captains are typically chosen from among the batters (with Dhoni being an exception partially). These batters fail often, yet are still given an extended leash, with countless chances to redeem themselves. Hate to see you go Ashwin in this manner. Best.

This argument that Ashwin was poor overseas is a crap comment. The reality is that our batting has been poor for last 5 years in overseas conditions. See me too a diehard fan of Ashwin since last 10-12 years, I too got hurt 😞 I want him to complete 650-700 Test wickets. but reality is Ashwin’s performance is extremely poor in New Zealand series and his wicket taking abilities started dipping for last 2-3 years against top quality sides. In overseas he had hardly picked for last 6-7 years. Ashwin is 38 now. Let him enjoy his life with his family and friends. He is extremely talented and most loved cricketer and a lovely human being 🥰 across appreciated India.

Post 2011 WC the Indian Team has always revolved around VK and RS. No other players except these two have been regular in the side regardless of the performance. RA could have been the captain of India team after VK, but it wasn't to be. RA could have been used in much better ways but the team mgt probably did not think so. RS does not even make it to the side given his performance in last few years, yet he is a regular while deserving players are benched and retiring.

There have been umpteen times Ashwin has been dropped overseas by captains Kohli, Dhoni , Sharma and coaches Shastri & Fletcher, especially - in preference for 4 quicks. Each time India lost big, almost without exception. Ashwin bore all those disappointments without complaint or speaking up. Even now he did not speak up. Just retired. Though apparently as per PTI, he had requested he be allowed to retire before the start of the series, but was told he would be in the playing 11. If an aging star wants to quit but is asked to play on and then benched, its a problem to put it mildly..If that report is correct, this is a breach of promise. Its also disrespect to a star who has 537 wickets in just 106 tests with the most MOS awards in the world. Also we do not know, but its a question mark if GG followed the usual protocol maintained by ppl like Shastri n Dhoni and Kohli to take the player aside and tell them why they are excluded and how and when they fit it or what they need to do. In Bumrahs prolonged absence , Ashwin has been the senior leader of the bowling unit. If Lyon can play why not Ashwin. If we need a second spinner by all means play Jadeja or Kuldeep.
