The Merman is no Jason Momoa is he? But a nice adventure game. I played the ZX Spectrum version and it hurt my eyes, but it was very pretty otherwise.

Hey sir, I had this game also too mostly as a cartridge when it was cool to go to Kaybee or Toys R Us for cartridges basically that was how I I recieved very many of them, it's such an honor to see this again, but don't like the new graphics so I can say that the 1987 video arcade version is better Keep on gaming!!! 🎮🕹❤💯

Hi Pete, the scrolling looks pretty good to me! it's true though that mostly the ST isn't a good scroller so what about trying some some STE enhanced games such as Outrun STE and Lotus Esprit STE and Great Giana Sisters STE. The STE is of course thje computer the ST should have beeen from the outset and the Falcon what the STE should have been. Oh well, that's history now. May be you could try running some games like Flying Shark with accelrated CPU (16 or 32 Mhz) which doesnt seem to effect game play speed but perhaps improves responsiveness when the screen is busy.

I've always loved how Millipede expands upon Centipede's core, and seeing (close to) side by side really shows the extra pace of Millipede off. Though I'll admit, the A8 Centipede is not my first pick of conversions to play, it's still enjoyable, and that's really what you've shown off here. Certainly a winning pair either way.
@DownHomeGamer5 күн бұрын
These games hold a special place for me because they, along with Oil’s Well, were my mother’s favorites. I grew up on a TRS-80 clone of Centipede, and then we had Millipede on the 130XE. Millipede is a fine sequel to Centipede, being iterative rather than transformative as a lot of sequels in that time were. Centipede and Millipede diabolically force you to divide your attention between the advancing centipede at the top of the screen and the spider at the bottom. There were so many evil spiders in early 80s gaming between Centipede and Millipede and Bill Williams’s games.

I very much appreciated your look at Centipede and Millipede for the Atari 8-bit. Definitely I came aware impressed with Millipede for the 8-bit as it seemed to be pretty balanced and allowed for a much longer gaming session than seemingly what Centipede was able to offer. As always, take care and I look forward to many more videos yet to come.

Not just Encounter blew it away, another Paul Woakes game- Mercenary in '85 or '86- pretty much destroyed this in terms of graphics and especially complexity. But yes, you're exactly right, if this had come out 4-5 years earlier, it would have been much better received.
@ryansease70667 күн бұрын
While I can appreciate the attempt to make this version of Battlezone close to the arcade original, too many other games (such as Encounter or Robot Tank) had taken this idea and already had improved upon it. Sad this couldn't have come out a lot earlier, but thems the breaks.
@sheets758 күн бұрын
It looks okay, but losing the glow of the vector graphics sort of reduces it to being a pretty dreary-looking game. I love the arcade game, and the Atari 2600 version is pretty good, but I don't think I could play this version too much.
@ThisIsPete7 күн бұрын
It is a bit dreary, isn't it? I wonder what effect just bumping up the luminance value on the colours used might have had on it.

It being held late is doubly interesting, if only because of the 5200 port, which this ended up being far superior too. I do wish it were a better conversion, but it does the job I guess, which is enough, even in the presence of Encounter.

Is there any way to play it on Gameastion Pro ( a26 a52 or a78 file type ? )
@ThisIsPete10 күн бұрын
For Atari 8-bit, you generally want an .XEX file, which is just the game itself, or an .ATR, which is a disk image. Assuming the GameStation Pro supports those formats, you should be good. M.U.L.E. uses the joystick and fire button to play and the console buttons (Start, Select, Option) to configure at the start, plus the spacebar to pause, so you'll need to map those controls. I can't provide links to software in the comments, but I'm sure you can track a copy down yourself!

I've always really enjoyed this one because the sense of exploration and wanting to get just a bit farther is very addictive to me. I'm not sure why, but it seems very particular to 8-bit games in this style - I like stuff like Metroid, too, and Spelunky as a modern take, but those are so hyper-caffeinated on sending enemies at you that they start feeling more like regular action games. Spelunker has a really balanced sense of pacing to me. Maybe it's because the only thing really chasing after you is the ghost, and everything else is more like an obstacle to navigate. It's you against the environment.

The Atari was underrated compared to the C64 considering the Atari had 16 times the colors, almost twice the CPU clock, true hardware scrolling, per-line color changes for all registers, 4 channels, USB-like SIO, CIO, ANTIC GPU with its own memory and instruction set, faster drive IO and it came out FIRST 3 years before the C64. People only bought the C64 because of price and memory.
