Glad I found this. So, about 10 years ago I chose "The Demons/Devils" for my first Dostoevsky read. I'm a University graduate in Philosophy and Literature so I wasn't expecting a difficult read but wow, was it ever. The characters and the almost Dickensian level of descriptive prose was so extensive I got lost in all of it. Not having read a 5th of it I put it down. Earlier this year I started anew and finished it within 2 weeks. I admit I was enthralled. Though I wouldn't say it changed my life. Perhaps that will come with a second read. That being said, I imagine I picked the wrong book for my first. I've since read Notes from the Underground and have begun The Brothers Karamazov. I'm still enthralled.

As a youngster, I haphazardly read the Grand Inquisitor (in German translation), and I was mesmerized. The honesty and logic used by the Inquisitor just baffled me.

@@personal-library-22 FYODOR DOSTOEVSKY is my favorite author. I have just finished the story “The Friend of the Family” which is mainly known as “The Village of Stepanchikovo, and it’s inhabitants.” Now I wish to explain all of his books and where I rank them compared to each other and among my favorite books of all time. Other books have also had other names like, “The Gentle Spirit” is also known as “The Eternal Husband” but I am not going to explain all possible titles. Figure it out for yourself, if you aren’t aware of all the titles. Fyodor Dostoevsky’s books in order, though “The Heavenly Christmas Tree” by some may not be considered a book, as it is the length of a story for a toddler, yet it is sublime. Below this, where they fall in my top 200 favorite books of all time. This 6th book from him is the 1st one to be a top 50 book for me. 12) Nameless Nobody (unfinished first work) probably never finished as about lesbianism and its' affects which would have defined him in a different way 8} Poor Folk (1846) 17) The Double (1846) 16) The Landlady (1847) 11) White Nights (1848) 5)The Friend of the Family (1859) 6) My Uncle’s Dream (1859) 1) The Insulted and Humiliated (1861) 18) House of the Dead (1862) 15) Notes from the Underground (1864) 3) Crime and Punishment (1866) 10) The Gambler (1866) 2) The Idiot (1869) 9) The Gentle Spirit (1870) 4) Demons (1872) 13) The Adolescent (1875) 14) The Dream of a Ridiculous Man (1877) 7) The Heavenly Christmas Tree (1878) 19) The Brothers Karamazov (1879) THE BOOKS IN MY TOP 200 FAVORITE BOOKS OF ALL TIME by Fyodor Dostoevsky, and where they fall on my list of favorite books of all time. 1) “The Insulted and Humiliated” 4) "The Idiot" 20) "Crime and Punishment” 30) "Demons" 38) “The Friend of the Family” 68) "My Uncle's Dream" 84) "The Heavenly Christmas Tree" 117) "Poor Folk” 134) "The Gentle Spirit" 145) "The Gambler" 153) "White Nights" 176) "Nameless Nobody” There is only one other man who has so many books as 12 in the top 200 and that is Ivan Turgenev who believed Leo Tolstoy was the only man to surpass him in works of literature. I agree that Leo Tolstoy is 2nd and that Turgenev is beneath him in 3rd, but I disagree that he would think himself better than Fyodor Dostoevsky. In reading books in 2020 the order was the same, for my top three favorite authors, but at one point Ivan Turgenev was my favorite author. Then I read so many books in 2022 and 2023 that the order is back to what it was when I was younger. Below are other authors I like, with books recommended to get to know them. 2nd) Leo Tolstoy (Resurrection or “War and Peace” or “Childhood, Boyhood”) 3rd) Ivan Turgenev (“Fathers and Sons” or Smoke) 4th) James A. Michener (Chesapeake or Poland) 5th) Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (“A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich” or “Cancer Ward”) 6th) C. S. Lewis (“The Magician's Nephew” or “Narnia: the Lion, the witch, and the wardrobe”) 7th) Charlotte Brontë (Vilette) 8th) J. R. R. Tolkien (The Hobbit) 9th) Isaac Asimov (“Foundation and Empire”) 10th) Jane Austen (“Pride and Prejudice”) 11th) Anne Brontë (The Tenant of Wildfell Hall) 12th) Mark Twain (The Adventures of Tom Sawyer) 13th) Anthony Trollope (“He Knew He Was Right” or “Can you forgive her?”) 14th) Dr. Burrhus Frederic (B. F.) Skinner (Verbal Behavior) 15th) George Eliot (Silas Marner) 16th) Charles Dickens (Hard Times) 17th) Thomas Hardy ("A pair of Blue Eyes" or "Jude the Obscure")

You can pick up any Dostoevsky book in whatever order you wish to read them, except for one particular book. If you ever wish to read "The Insulted and Humiliated” it is imperative you read "Poor Folk" first so that you understand why does this society love the main character. If you don't want to read "Poor Folk" due to how it is like unto "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" or "Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded" or "Clarissa, or, The History of a Young Lady" and that style of book is just too much for you, then try the biography below. "Dostoevsky in Love: An Intimate Life" by Alex Christofi Then you can read "The Insulted and Humiliated" and understand it.

I agree G. Orwell was spot on when he spoke of a world that monitored our every move, traced everything you do financially , free speech a thing of the past in the not so distant future, 1984 can no longer be dismissed as nonsense, as we are living it.
