The first and last album with vocalist Ray Wilson. For me, the album still stands up well after 25+ years. My first impressions when I heard it was how similar Wilson sounded to Peter Gabriel, and how Banks and Rutherford reverted back to longer songs. Ultimately, his biggest and insurmountable problem was that he wasn't Phil Collins. My favourite track on this album is _The Dividing Line._

Basically, nearly everything from the mid eighties to throughout the 90's is mediocre, bland and instantly forgettable MOR pop. That is nigh on 20 years of sub par music. And yet throughout that period and beyond they traded on their golden years to keep them going in the public eye. A new, modern Quo after the original band split would never have seen any success without that past history to live off. Parfitt had writers block and his best work never made it onto albums (for the most part) and Rossi went complete pop pap and paraded his personal cheesy, nursery rhyme music off as Status Quo, when it clearly wasn't. So compiling 20 bad Quo songs is no easy task as I can think of double that and ALL from the 80/90s. Nobody in the business completely tanked their musical credibility and loss of quality control as much as the Quo brand did, but remarkably they came through it all and still had moderate success in the years ahead (Heavy Traffic being the turning point).

Good listing, my opinions are quite close to yours, apart from the ones including the concerto, which I don't like at all - although the other songs played there are great, originally on the Powerhouse album, I had to buy the Concerto CD just to own CD versions of these). I have more 100 live recordings (including bootlegs - more if you count things like the (at least) three versions of Made in Japan separately, as well as other remasters etc). I would have to say that the Long Beach album featuring Tommy Bolin (Wings of a Russian Foxbat/King Buscuit Hour) is better than the Last Concert/This time around debacle where Tommy had slept awkwardly after injecting heroin which numbed him so much that he could supposedly only play with one finger and an open chord . Which shows the amazing talent of the man, even if the performance isn't great - wild dogs is fantastic - I doubt if he'd ever practiced the songs that way , he still does a better job than some cover bands I've seen! Get the Long beach album, it's much better, even if Coverdale isn't great on that one. I think the Mark 3 Paris album is superb it was Richie's last performance before leaving to form Rainbow and, IMO, he gives one of his best recorded performances, when a lot of players in the same circumstances would just have phoned it in. The Graz one is also very good. These two and Saarbrucken in Germany, all recorded within days of each other are the source recordings for made in Europe. Reportedly Saarbrucken was the best performance of all three but has not been released (Maybe because most of MIE is from that gig) Coverdale didn't want to sing Gillan material and made it obvious in the way in he performed them, in 1974/75 they probably had to keep playing Smoke but they should have dropped Highway Star and Space Truckin' as soon as they could - which they could have done easily after Stormbringer's release using that and Burn to make up the majority of the set (Easy to say in retrospect I guess). The other option would be to have had Hughes sing lead on Gillan material, as he has, IMO, a better straight ahead rock voice than DC, but I doubt if ego would permit Coverdale reducing himself to backing vocalist even if just for one song. Lazy on the In concert album is my favourite version, it's on nearly every live album I've got, without Coverdale, and that's my #1 version. Blackmore is my #1 guitarist (I even played in a Blackmore cover band in the 90's) but I'm not one of those "no Blackmore, no purple" knobs. Admittedly it took me a number of years to appreciate Come Taste the Band as a purple LP. IMO Blackmore is a better writer (even though a lot the Rhythm parts of a lot of his songs are simple) Morse is possibly a more versatile player and with him and Airey becoming the prime songwriters, under Gillan's leadership, the direction changed from Rock with a bit of proggyness to proggy with a bit of Rockyness. There are still some fantastic songs from this era e.g. "Sometimes I feel like screaming" from this era. One great advantage with the Steve Morse years is his willingness to play songs like "No One Came", "Fools" and "When A Blind Man Cries" which RB didn't like or want to play and I actually prefer his live versions of the Fireball songs to the Studio Versions. I also have a soft spot for the Knebworth LP, as I was also there, the fulfilment of a dream, standing in the rain - Maybe we saw each other on the day - I was the one in soaking wet, covered in mud denim!!! :). Not only was I envious of Blackmore's skill but also his choice in footwear (wellies!). In my memory its the complete concert with the exception of "Under The Gun" Maybe one day there will be a complete version released. As purple was a group of improvising virtuoso's every live performances was unique so, in some ways I don't understand your reluctance to own every one. Although I can also say how many versions of Smoke or Black Night do we really need!!?? so my head agrees with you, but not my heart. Given that I wont say how great albums like Scandinavia, Long Beach1970 and Denmark (I think that this features the only officially released live version of Fireball from that era) and I assume that you own the three disk version of Made in Japan - which shows how different their performances are from one day to the next - I would personally recommend two recordings that you don't seem own. One was recorded in Verona and called something like "the songs that built rock" (also available on DVD/Blu-ray), This one is the Morse/Airey line up backed by a full orchestra, maybe not the best ever performances of these songs but the addition of the orchestra does make for a very interesting experience, almost like hearing new versions of songs we know intimately. I really like perfect strangers on this LP but everything is really good. The other LP dates from the 1993 tour and was originally released as a four disc box set with the NEC recording. This release was done without the bands permission and Ian Gillan was especially vocal about it, asking fans not to buy it (mainly for the NEC concert) and it was withdrawn by the label. Although both concerts have been subsequently released I have the original 4 disk set. Given that Blackmore didn't go on stage until halfway through Highway Star and the first thing he did was chuck a glass of water at Gillan, its not a completely horrible concert, although I would say that this is a close as I've heard to Blackmore just phoning it in. Most of his solos are perfunctory and as short as he could get away with. The other CD was recording at Stuttgart on the same tour and is fantastic. For me this is my #2 all time live MK2 purple recording (ties with Knebworth which, like you, I love for sentimental reasons) Blackmore is brilliant here; showing that, like in 1975, even if he knew he was leaving very few could touch him when the mood strikes. Almost is every song is longer (from memory I think Anya is over a minute longer ) and all are better, genuinely a fantastic recording - IMO of course! I also really like the new =1 LP and from the videos I've seen on You Tube I'm hoping for a Simon McBride (who is fantastic) live LP as he seems to have swung them back to the rocky side again, albeit a little more restrained than, say, "In Rock" As well as an official live LP from the current line up - which I'm sure will come I personally would love to hear the full set from Saarbrucken in 1975 and an official release from the 1993/4 tour with Joe Satrianni replacing Blackmore. I've at least 2 bootlegs from this tour and although the sound quality of one is particularly bad the performances are great, you can almost feel the release of tension from the band with the departure of Blackmore. From what I've read the band would like to release this but can't for contractual reasons. If anyone has got this far I apologise for the length I should have proof read and edited it before posting but, Deep Purple live LPs I could talk about forever and this was all just typed off the cuff.
