Pretty good stuff!!!! I'll be down that way in a couple of weeks and have never been in the area but have spent a lot of time in the water. I guess I'll just swim out till I see something?
@snorkeldreams Жыл бұрын
Sort of - it depends where you start at. Most of ft laud and pompano has reef bands. The first is usually just past the inner buoys. The second one is 600-900 feet out. There is sand in between. Not much in the sand but you can see tarpon and rays. Swim out to the 1st or 2nd reef band to see stuff. At anglins Pier it's 600 ft out on the south side and it's beautiful :D

Poor baby ,how likely will it survive on its own after its been hit? Do turtles usually not survive after this happens? 😢
@snorkeldreams Жыл бұрын
I wondered too and evidently it depends on whether any vital organs get damaged and whether the shell gets crushed in such a way that it outs pressure on something. If neither of those things happen, It turns out that the shell itself can heal. That turtle was doing better the last time that I saw it :)

Hey! A pal and I came here twice to spear before, got a big sized barracuda further past the pier and some nice snappers, however the last time we went a police boat came by (it was the weekday and there was no one else near the pier) and told us we had to be further away from the pier, which I know the law ofcourse, but assumed because typically everyone goes under the pier, aswell as the fact that it was inoperable made me think it was okay to go. Is it legal for us to swim there, and the cop was giving me false news? Or does it not matter wether or not the pier is actually in operable condition
@snorkeldreams Жыл бұрын
I haven't gotten any pushback about diving there, but during another weekday there was a kayak under the Pier and there was a state police officer asking if we knew anything about them. Im pretty sure they were spearfishing but didnt actually see anything but the kayak and a couple of masks. As I said no, I never found out why he was asking. In most places you can't spear within 100 yds of shore but I will try to find out more detailed info.

What are you wearing during your snorkeling?
@snorkeldreams Жыл бұрын
these days I usually wear a one piece rash guard. its like a wetsuit but its not hot like neoprene, the water here can get to 88 degrees. you cant wear most sunblock because it interferes with coral reproduction, so if you don't cover your skin then you will burn over and over which can lead to skin cancer. There can also be MANY stinging jellyfish in the water so the rash guard protects your skin (they slide right off instead of stinging you). I also wear a blow up flotation vest with a whistle in case I get exhausted or taken by the current. I wear a weight belt so I can stay down without bobbing up like a cork and I wear a titanium dive knife. Its not for sharks, sharks are faster than my ability to pull a knife, its in case I get tangled in fishing line so I can cut it before I drown.

Ive seen other florida pier videos where the water was full of tiger sharks. Werent you worried to encounter one?
@snorkeldreams Жыл бұрын
Yes, kind of :D I am planning to take several dive trips with a company that lets you cage dive and free dive among sharks under their supervision. I do know that sharks are misunderstood and I am hoping that learning from them will teach me how to deal with sharks wisely. Sadly, the shark populations are collapsing in many areas due to overfishing and probably due to climate change, so it is pretty rare to see big sharks here while snorkeling.

Hi! I’m going to the area mid December. I have no snorkeling gear but I am dedicated to snorkeling here. Of course, I’ll purchase a mask and flippers. What would you recommend? How long does it take to swim out to this area where the majority of the video was filmed? Thank you!
@snorkeldreams Жыл бұрын
If you are new then get a regular mask, not a full face mask. Get longer flippers. They don't have to be freediving fins, just don't get the little frog ones. Get a dry top snorkel, they keep water out until you learn. After a few dives learn about weight belts and maybe get one. They make it easier to stay down but practice without them first. The reef at Anglins Pier is about 600 ft out on the south side of the Pier. Have fun and be safe
