I learned this from Sam Harris. When you are feeling overwhelmed by your life, look around and think "What if I had died yesterday? What if all of this was take away from me forever and I never had the chance to experience it again? How happy would I be to be brought back, right here, in this moment?" This is a powerful tool for finding gratitude in your life. Another re-framing of your life might go like this: "I'm not facing a deadly disease. I'm not living under a brutal regime. I'm not living in abject poverty. My children and family are not starving from famine and disease. There at at least a billion people on this planet that would consider their prayers answered to be in exactly the same situation I am in now, just stuck in traffic and late for a meeting." It's human nature to be not quite satisfied with our lives. The pre-humans who were satisfied with their lives and not always striving to find ways to make it easier and better probably died off. And the ones who were always striving, always not quite happy with the way things are, found better ways of doing things and likely survived. This is what it means to be human. But looking for new ways to be grateful and recognizing how good life is compared to how it could be simply by an accident of birth, helps put things in perspective. Learning to respond to things differently also helps. You can't change the world, but you can change the way you respond to the world and this is almost as good.

Brilliant - magnificently rich discussion with Dr Narvaez around spirit and the crippling narrow Western mindset compared to animist, indigenous and ancestral wisdoms. Obvious, perhaps, but so uncommon in our popular and overwhelmingly busy culture, such that these thoughts feel revolutionary even when they are as old as human history. Thanks, Mark and Darcia, so much.

Thank you for this very important interview. Nora has communicated what is so hard to get across, especially in this time of reflexive polarity. My biggest, easiest to share with others takeaway is to not communicate with people in a way where they end up needing to defend their position. 2 days ago, myself and two others gathered for a curiosity and learning zoom call because we voted differently in this past election here in the States. And we felt the compulsion to judge each others but a deeper desire to learn and understand. When we got on the call we co-created some communication guidelines for ourselves which in effect, kept us from having to defend our position. Just that by itself left the channels open for us to be able to hear each other, ask questions, share what we did and be honest about what we didn't know, agree to go research and find answers and keep learning together. And we left liking and respecting each other more. Couldn't believe it. And, it feels like there is something in how that was held that can be replicated, and is of utmost importance at this time. Finding this video was like a fresh drink of water and a helpful description of what we did. I'll be passing this video along to my community. <3

Hey Mark, what a great podcast, not just because of Kat, but because of how you were vulnerable, honest and open. You could have tried to bluff your way through and like I would have done in your shoes, failed miserably. However, you paused, considered, admitted when you were struggling, lost for words, didn't understand, so you let Kat help you out. Which she did with grace and ease. You were asking the questions most of us listening will have wanted you to ask. Great work Mark. Now I have to listen to it again to understand...which Kat would tell me I don't need to it just is :-) Colin

Ah much appreciated Colin! Yeah I find what makes this process of putting out a podcast each week a hell of a lot easier is simply not fronting, it would make it excruciating for me having to editing that and witness that on a weekly basis. So in some ways it's a self-preservation tactic for the podcast and me! 🤣

Wow, so you think that doing 4hrs community work and then having a party is multiple million times more effective than reducing your consumption; clearly thinking isn't one of your strengths. Face it, you sold your soul to the advertising industry; waffling a bunch of twaddle about being collective ain't gonna get it back.
@whatisagoodlife
@whatisagoodlife 4 ай бұрын
Hey, I see that generally what Jon is pointing to is the considerable potential we have if we come together and was merely using this as an example not the entirety of his concept. The whole point of his book and organisation is to stop seeing ourselves as consumers and more as citizens. I don't think from having this conversation with Jon or how he chatted after the interview I'd come to the conclusion that he has sold his soul. He's a lovely guy trying to do his bit. I respect what you are pointing to in terms of the significance of what we are consuming and don't see the need for insults.
@edbop
@edbop 4 ай бұрын
@@whatisagoodlife He may well be a lovely guy, so what? What he is attempting to do is suggest that we don't have to change our consumption behaviour, as long as we don't think of ourselves as consumers and do some collective activity; it is idiotic. There are plenty of lovely people who are actually making changes that have some effect. We have plenty of greenwash already, we don't need anymore more.
@whatisagoodlife
@whatisagoodlife 4 ай бұрын
@@edbop I don't think he is suggesting for a second we don't need to change our consumption behaviour, it is one clip out of a whole conversation, out of his overall work. I still don't understand the need for insults, but I guess that is the internet.
@edbop
@edbop 4 ай бұрын
@@whatisagoodlife He explicitly says that doing 4hrs of communal activity would be multiple million times more effective than flying less. I don't know about you but I value sincerity, there are plenty of people that can smile and be personable but are total arseholes. I'm not trying to insult him, what would be the point, he won't care what someone he hasn't met thinks. I'm simply pointing out that he is talking out of his arse and smiling while doing that does not change the fact.

@@edbop I don't think he meant that literally. Look we clearly disagree here and that's alright, I wish you well and appreciate you watching the clip. I see what you are pointing to and get the spirit of it, as I get the spirit of what Jon is pointing to too.

I often use the term "True Health" in my discussion of a plant-free diet. I don't think anyone can be sure what that would feel like. But there are many testimonials from people describing a kind of Zen they have never felt before. These are people well past midlife saying they have literally never felt happier, stronger, and healthier before in their lives. They've cured problems they didn't know they had until they were gone.

I appreciate the direction to which he speaks… going from what our modern society teaches us… getting more information, doing more things… and then eventually coming to realize that that’s not it… and that perhaps it’s not what we do (as THOUGHT by the insecure intellect) but the feeling from which we do it (as FELT by our always secure and whole heart)… and then how challenging it can be to discern the the difference, so that we’re living more from the heart than the head... or perhaps more in balance between the two. Every day I discover another subtlety where an idea or belief or perception (something in my head) is unhelpful in that it gets in the way of living from my heart, BUT, is also helpful, because the tenser, heavier feeling of it, is what makes me aware of its existence (“Oh, I’m making this up”), and so it informs me as to where I am in the moment (ie, more in my heavier feeling head, less in my lighter feeling heart).
