What a wonderful little cat! I started reading through the new BT Universe book and immediately noticed typos and editing mistakes. I can assume the new force manuals will have the same problems. It seems that this is the current state of all industries.... I was told the new DnD books have the same problems. A bigger fear I have is whether or not the newer books are written entirely by people or partially by AI.

@@27Wookiee I did a review of the Davion Force Manual and found some typos. It also cuts out the WoB and illkan eras. I've been told CGL intends to release those later, possibly as an add-on. Recently I was gifted a PDF of the Kuritan FM. I'll print it out and bind it soon but I suspect they'll be typos as well. Which is crap, in my opinion, for an expensive, professionally created product. I just finished reading the rebirth of the Grey Death Legion and found it has a few typos as well. Go figure.

The xerox is pretty straight forward. there's only four settings and I always manually tab the duplex and the landscape based upon how the PDF appears. In this case, it doesn't work as it does for, say, PDFs coming from publishers such as CGLs.

I do love maps. At some point on most days, I am working with or making a map; so, I think of them as pretty important. Most of that is GIS these days, but I still have to hand draw plenty of field sketch maps. At minimum, to qualify as a map, the drawing should have an indication of scale, and directional orientation. As for game maps, I am definitely one of those DMs who will have hidden rooms, etc. that are only likely to be found through good party mapping habits. I also mostly make somewhat inaccurate/incomplete maps for the inspection of the players; I find it odd how many newer games/gamers expect high detail, high accuracy satellite maps in a quasi-medieval setting. For making sure you can find your way back out a dungeon, keeping at least a "trailing" map is good; that can be as simple as squares for rooms, and lines for corridors. I like that hex map sheet with the outline of a Mollweide projection that you showed toward the beginning...handy thing that! Cheers!
@yourseatatthetable6 күн бұрын
I've had multiple sessions in campaigns where the PC's are chasing down some 'old map' or 'some old fart who saw such a map'. It's like keeping a party log. So many player's don't seem to see any point for one, and yet, a well documented log/diary, whatever, can be another form of map in my experience.
@Archaeo_Matt6 күн бұрын
@@yourseatatthetable Keeping an adventure log does seem to be one of the things that the solo gamers are keeping alive. Not map related, but I firmly believe in using all the old player roles, especially the party caller. The objection of the new style players seems stem from it being perceived as establishing a hierarchy, whereas I see it as allowing me to stay in my impartial observer/referee mode as much as possible.

@@Archaeo_Matt It was a question the young royal had asked himself when choosing the modified programs, he’d brought along, and so he armed himself with a variety of specially security ‘wares to, hopefully, answer any situation. Watching the ancient slicer at work was a treat, something he hadn’t had much opportunity to see such tactics in action. He thought he might use his symbiote protocol next, but the Tech IV ‘ware was almost too beautiful to toss at the machine. Layered with deliberately easily overridden coding, the hidden information became apparent, stating peaceful intent and offering peace. But if his Tech III malware succeeded in revealing the ‘cease and desist’ command, he’d rather not activate the symbiotic code and watch it become consumed. The slicer ‘bot’s cyber-attack seemed to bog down as it worked against the more advanced safe ’ware contained in the Tech III packet. Watching the CIS analyst program monitoring the artifacts progress, Luccolos began to suspect something else was going on. With a gentle tap of a claw on the holo pad, he activated another bit of custom ‘ware. The system was originally designed to run diagnostics of NEXAS sub-systems and their backup ‘ware. Called a Grubber by programmers, his modified version ghosted as a peripheral so to avoid interfering with the operating software in action. One glance at the Grubbers’ data told him that the ‘bot had sent a second sleaze ‘ware beneath the firsts coding and was using it to try and access the CIS’s comunit function. If it succeeded it could conceivably place a call or send out an eburst, something that he didn’t want to happen. Luccolos didn’t hesitate. He activated his faux malware. Really, just an aggressive-seeing code designed to fail quickly while protecting a hardier bit of programming intended to offer a cease-fire. Should the slicer ‘bot ignore the code entirely, nothing but garbage, data would result, but if it attacked it the ‘active security’ program should reveal the message. And Lucc had hopes that the area was shielded against communications. Besides, who would this device call after some four thousand years? Curiosity warred with his pouncing instinct, catch the ‘mouse’ or watch to find its hidey hole? Curiosity could still be satisfied, he supposed, if this latest ‘pounce’ failed. As the bait ‘ware flooded the CIS interface the slicer ‘bots main slide towards the com ‘ware slowed and then stopped as more subroutines came online. The ‘bots own safe ‘ware, tricked into believing it was under attack, caused increasingly more of the ‘bots various programs to drive the mouse madly back and forth within the virtual walls and around nonexistent obstacles being created. When the powerful seeming attack sputtered out, leaving behind coding that should be clear in the ‘puters own language that the CIS - and by default, Luccolos - wanted to parley, all activity in the cortex seemed to go dark, except for several deep core routines that would not have showed up on a lesser Tech CIS. Either the slicer ‘bot was sitting in a virtual corner, gazing warily at his cyber presence - such as a Weebie might do when it suspects a Moocha lurking within its own hole, or the machine was sulking. For several pregnant moments nothing happened, then a simple query was sent to the CIS which dutifully displayed it, translating ‘puter code to basic. "Truces are illogical." Success! At least an argument was progress Lucc entered a carefully thought out response. “Not when both parties seek the same goal, and do not find themselves in competition for resources.” The young slicer was hopeful, but still viewed the situation with realism in mind. Just because they had reached talks didn’t mean they had reached an agreement. The thinking machine seemed to take a long time to formulate a response. Lucc was about to try another tact when the ‘bot replied. Continuing to defy the duly programed leadership of the Imperium illogically forces both sides to consume precious resources desired to terminate the ‘bugs’. Desist in preventing my duly appointed duties to the Emperor and confine yourself to the nearest reprocessing center. You will be codified and disseminated as necessary. Lucc could have smacked himself. “The silly machine thinks it’s still four thousand years ago!” he growled to Ripper. “He must not have had an active time counter.” The Helkat lifted his head and growled slightly but when nothing further seemed to require his attention he yawned and settled back down, his half-closed eyes staring up at Lucc. “Just trust me,” he murmured to the Helkat. “I know what I am talking about.” The half-Kattorian, half-Peregrine lordling entered a new response. “It is my duty to inform you that four millennia have passed since you were last active. The war is over. The ‘bugs’ are no longer a significant menace.” An example from a semi-solo game between a friend and I over a decade ago.

the fun is spending time with your friends telling interesting stories and having amusing anecdotes, in jokes, and memes to share with them like some kind of secret club its like turning to your friend, apropos of nothing, and asking them a seemingly arbitrary hypothetical, and they, out of love and respect to you, genuinely consider it and having pondered an answer, they give it to you - earnestly and honestly 'hey who do you think would win in a fight - alien or predator? 'under what circumstances, exactly? because, the xenomorph would win in a one on one fight with no prep, obviously - but i imagine the yautja would do what they can to avoid being caught in that position' 'lets say its a one on one but not face to face and the alien is unaware, so the predator tracked it to its roost but hasnt caught it yet and hasnt yet given away its position' 'well in that case, i think the yautja has better odds - the element of surprise alone would probably carry most of the burden, but theyre not called predators for nothing' in an exchange like that there is so much between the hood, theres a level of implicit trust, theres no ego - no right or wrong answer and no judgement, theres no apathy - serious thought is put into it. but on the surface it seems kinda throwaway if you dont particularly care about the topic of discussion. sometimes the anecdotes survive even when the friendships do not - we still talk about how once the entire party was tpkd by a players summon that they couldnt control, even though 3 out of the 5 people in that game are no longer around.

Thanks for the video! This Force Manual Series is essentially a reprint with some tweaks of the Combat Manual line. They published the Kurita and Mercenaries combat manuals, and had the Davion mostly complete when they stopped the line, so Davion was never published. They have finished the Davion, and published it as the first force manual and now the Kurita. Same layouts, 80-90% same content, graphics are the same, art is updated. Its a little meh, in my opinion, if you had the combat manual version already. Seeing how little the Kurita book changed between the combat and force versions, I am curious how close the Mercenaries combat and force will be. I feel a bit off about it, just wishing CGL was more upfront that the Force Manual series was much more than a "spiritual successor" to the com at Manual line. It's pretty much the combat Manual line got a divorce and remarried. Not even different enough for me to say it's their kid. Because the kid would have the full content up through the current timeline. If I am buying a book, I don't want to print out free pdf updates and stick them in there, assuming they are free. Maybe they should have invested the hours to flush out the books entirely before moving forward. What do you think?

Upcasting was one of the means that I was fishing around for. So, for example, using a higher level spell slot to power up Mage Hand may, with group approval, increase the amount the cantrip can manipulate. instead of 10 pounds, perhaps 30 pounds. Instead of limiting range of 30', perhaps it's 90'. The real power behind spells is clever uses of said spell magic, not 'even more pwoerful spells!'.
@yourseatatthetable26 күн бұрын
A cantrip is a spell that can be cast at will, without using a spell slot and without being prepared in advance. Repeated practice has fixed the spell in the caster's mind and infused the caster with the magic needed to produce the effect over and over. Cantrip: Mend 1 - Repair torn clothing 2 - repair puncture holes in containers, armor, flesh (if you can argue it successfully), 3 - broken oars, poles, chair legs, doors, etc; 4 - broken weapons; 5 - wagon wheels, axels (the broken part), leather straps and harnesses; 6 - broken (or intentionally cut) rope. Think about that for a moment. A party at my table was able to use a single coil of rope repeatedly for other purposes, and then afterwards, use mend to reattach the severed rope together. In one campaign, a group used mend to attach several 50' lengths of rope together to form a single, very long one. Spells, that do not need to use up a spell slot, without needing to be re-learned every day, one that arguably, you are so used to utilizing that you can do so with the minimal effort (including fancy finger play). Just fire it off. Spells that don't require a spellbook to recall (handy if you can't get to your spellbook). Lighting Fire <> Basically turning your fingertips into a Bic lighter with unlimited (more or less) uses. I had a player whose Rogue took one level of Magic user just to gain access to Cantrips. One ploy he loved to do when he had a chance to pre-stage a room before combat was to place an oil soaked rag (or other item) somewhere next to something flammable, like curtains, then fire off the cantrip at a time he figured would cause the most confusion.

Of course, they also mainly just want to talk about what their characters are doing, and where they are in those minimally described scene locations; to be completely candid, I think they only keep randomly determined successes, in some limited capacity, so they can believe they're doing something more than just talking about themselves through the vehicle of a game character. I was going to put a bit about Quantum Ogres in my own agency video, because there is some overlap there: but, I ultimately decided that I'd want to do a standalone video for that topic. In brief, I think a lot of it boils down to GMs being afraid their characters will get bored, or become frustrated, if they get to a locked gate without realizing they'd missed a key. That's just an analogy, of course, it doesn't have to be a physical gate or key, just an obstacle for which they've missed an important step for making it passable. A lot of advice will even explicitly state that one shouldn't require one specific object to get through that gate. In a sense, I would agree. If you didn't find the key, then magical or physical means of unlocking the gate should be possible; but, that doesn't necessarily mean that it should be made time/cost effective to figure out the alternative. I think the Quantum Ogre is mostly just a device to circumvent the possibility that the players will have to backtrack to find the required key. I find it odd that, given how much video games seem to influence current tabletop practices, that players don't just assume they've missed a required item and just automatically go back to find it, because that's frequently required to unlock the next level of a video game. Cheers!

There's a lot more to be said about the concept and ideas of said Quantum Ogre needing it's own video. Your last part I hadn't considered. That a large part of 'beating or mastering' a particular video game involves try, try, try again.

1:30 The Quantum Ogre 2:40 I have been playing and GMing games since I was 9, possibly 8... I do the math for those who like to smirk at such claims 3:30 Total Player Agency or removing the GM (or as much of the GM's responsibilities) from the game 4:50 In the beginning, the Dungeon Master created, ran, and mediated damn near everything...because, That's how these games got started 7:10 Explaining the Quantum Ogre 7:50 How much Player Agency? Artist is Matt Plog. He has done work for Catalyst for a long time. You can commission him to do customs for you. That is what these and others have done. They paid money out of their own pocket for the artwork.

And it shows. I should have commented on the quality of the art. I think it's mentioned in the forward, but don't quote me on that.

My imagination vs. artists values suggests that the creators of the TRO spent upwards of a grand on the art, or in that area. Art is a tricky thing since it can take many, many hours of work to produce a good piece, and yet one has to value the time in such a manor as potential customers can afford. My guess about $100 per piece, which would still fall short of the time and effort put into said piece.

Say, Mark, have you noticed how much better these fan projects do vs. say, BT novel reviews? This one passed 200 views in ten hours whereas most of my book reviews rarely break 50 over a year or longer.

@@markcalhoun9480 Hopefully we'll come across some more of them. While there were some things I'd have done different, or would have included in the TRO, it is very well done. Even if the art work had been cruder, it is still very useful for anyone wanting to run Hell's Horses as a faction. In my opinion, of course.

Shawn/SHONNER died? I missed that. Personally, even though I am also very much o the role-play heavy end of the spectrum,I disagreed with him on what roe-playing means. For me it is more about expression, and for him it always seemed to be more about immersion. That is why I think the 4d method is flawed, since it will not really lead to expressive play. And regarding the topic of the video, I think some GMs might be bad, but often it is just a difference in taste. I mean, even though my style is very different from that 4d method, I usually get people to rave how great I am as a GM. And I am sure, even the 4d crowd would get a kick out of playing at my table. Still, some people have not developed a style that works for them and that has people enjoying it, and those might be indeed bad GM, since often they do not even want to run the game in the first place.
