No one has really definitively answered this question, is the smooth side of the strip only meant to be used bare or can compound be used on that side as well? I see some strops that have two smooth sides so it makes me believe compound is supposed to be used on one of those sides.
@rsrrock7 ай бұрын
Both smooth and rough sides of the leather can be used. I prefer to use a finer compound on the smooth side. Compound doesn’t really adhere well to the smooth side compared to the rough side though so it takes some work to apply the compound to the smooth side and make it applied evenly.

I just applied my compound (Cr2O3) to a new leather strop. The compound was in powder form and its application together with some drops of leather oil was very easy. However, you do have to watch out not to get the Cr2O3 to your clothes, walls and so on... Have a good day and greeting from snow-covered Finland!

You should have tried that test on a table and not on a concrete surface. The concrete will offer a solid resistance to any blade (even braking it 🤷🏻♂️). Also look how Lynn tested the knife by stacking several pieces of cardboard together (simulating a real target).

Do you need to flat the stones every time in a while?
@rsrrock11 ай бұрын
For ceramic stones you pretty much never need to flatten them. Maybe after years and years of constant use you’ll see some rounding on the stone. Most people use diamond stones to flatten ceramic. If you’re using a soaking stone, depending on the brand you’ll see some rounding off moderately fast. For these stones most people flatten them using “official” flattening stones, by pinning sandpaper to a flat surface and then sliding the rounded end of the stone across until flat, or just use a diamond stone.

I use neatsfoot compound mixture after chalking on a coat of crox. Then I mix in with a toothbrush to spread it around, using toothbrush mixes and sorta melts crayon of crox. Leather soaks up neatsfoot oil and leaves behind a nice even coat of crox!

You must really be an imbecile. You really expect a knife to do the same as an axe based on your personal definition of robust? It’s like expecting a small car to do the same as a 10ton truck. The size of that log even your axe would’ve had some trouble. You have too much time on your hands bro.

I think the problem was your cutting technique. You cut that paper so aggressively of course it’ll ruin that factory edge. Also, it wasn’t phone book paper. Lastly , you should use progressive stropping after cutting paper. Start with green compound and work your way up to 0.01 micron-ish. It’s a precision tool you know.
@rsrrock2 жыл бұрын
I think you’re right, the paper itself would ruin any edge. I’ll save some money up for some better quality paper and reshoot the entire video. My sharpening technique also needs some minor adjustments.
