Definitely flummoxed - but impressed - with the free spirited abandon with which you load your ship and proceed with the absolute bare minimum. I would definitely recommend a budget full-face motorcycle helmet for those cold mornings and for the spray and the wind & engine noise. A Bell Mag 9 has 2 visors with one being tinted…..it would dramatically protect your hearing, and dramatically shield you from the cold, spray and fatigue. I think it would be a game changer with this kind of boat on this kind of journey. Of course you would only use it in the cold, rain, chop….truly would revolutionize your fatigue and enjoyment…..don’t need it for the crash capability.

I wish I knew how you train your mind and psyche to enjoy rather than worry about engine or mechanical failure…..very impressive. I have ridden Harley’s across the country, solo, 4 times and I still have not learned how to let go of the fear of system failure! 😊😂

Love this video, Thanks! I learned to sail in a 10 ft Rooster class wooden boat in many of these areas. I agree with you, fun times! Except when I launched my car on the Washington St ramp. Parking gear failed. Served two years 68-69 on the DE1040 pier two. Discharged from Boston 1969, 4 years Purdue getting my BSEE. Naval Underwater Systems center Newport for 10 years. My twins were born in the Newport Hospital. Anyway enough of me, I researched the small island near the war college. Came up with this from Google Earth. It is Gull Island and is listed as a lighthouse at one time. I screen captured a map with the info but I don't know how to attach it to this comment. If you want, I can email it to you or you can look at Google Earth. Thanks!

Im a sailor and i could appreciate the scope of your adventure. Keep on sailing. I think the whaler gave you a great perspective to be closer to the water and with the elements. Up here in the great lales people fashion spray hoods for the bows to keep the cold water out. The costs were not astronomical. If you were 20 yeara old, you probably wpuld have camped moat nights.

Just came across your videos. Makes me want to venture out a little further. What advice can you give about the weather ? Winds .. etc .. I wish I would have held out a little longer for a Whaler . Bought an older 17’ skiff with a 40hp . Might sell and go Whaler hunting again.
@3DSAILOR
@3DSAILOR Жыл бұрын
I watch the weather closely before I go out. The wind is the most important data point for smaller boats. Wind makes waves! I use an app called Windy the shows me wind speed and direction and wave height and period. Ideally, you want the wave period to be twice that of the wave height. These older whalers love going with the wind and waves. I'll usually head out early before the wind in a SW direction and when the SW wind kick in here in RI I ride it home.
