Been using your tracer 62 line for awhile now and i love it. And ive also got into fishing farther almost from the get go, since i didnt understand why people would risk trying to get closer to fish just so they can keep the line shorter. Ill bomb flies 25+ft to hit a seam that others just wont try and reach, and my results are showing for it.
@mavrkflyfishing
@mavrkflyfishing Ай бұрын
Exactly! Why pass on fishy water? Far seams are golden and most people pass them up. It's because they've been taught that tight lining is a short game. I truly believe that 98% of tight line anglers don't have the skill to load the rod properly to cast into the 20 to 40ft zone. The key is a powerful back cast and hauling the forward cast. This may require a water-load or a forward false cast to initiate. But in both cases, hauling is the key. Also, a lot of people use too big of a rod. Loading a 10-11ft rod with small bead head nymphs is difficult for most so they just lob it. Stepping down to a 2wt or a lighter 3wt ESN rod will help with this loading issue. Here in the west, the rivers are full of boulders and mixed speed water. You can't always just wade closer to the juicy runs. The ability to cast to them is a huge advantage. Anyway, thanks for your comment- I'm glad that you are seeing the advantages of long tight-line casts. I'll be making more videos on long casting techniques soon.

Awesome video. I’m just getting into euro/tight line so this was super helpful. My one question is; if you’re using an indicator on your mono rig, why not use a typical WF floating fly line at that point? Also, when you’re doing your typical arial cast, how do you keep the flies from tangling each other? Thanks for the help!
@DuriensBane
@DuriensBane Ай бұрын
You can remove an indicator when you are going back to fishing closer, if you are using a floating line you might have problems fishing closer or if you are reaching over a seam or current it will sag your line. For keeping flies from tangling it depends on how you rig it. If you use a dropper tag, keeping it short is the key, no more then 4in, it may wrap around the line but the bottom fly and top fly typically wont tangle (but it does happen) or you can use an inline rig which almost never tangles.

It's a really interesting concept. Ultra-light and compact are major pros for sure. I guess the one thing I wonder about is what do you do when you hook into a big fish that decides to run? I imagine you would keep your hand in that 90-degree unwind position and let the fish pull the line through your hand and off the reel? The same question comes up for Tenkara enthusiasts as well. What do they do when the line runs out, the tension of the rig is maximized, the fisherman can't move, and the fish isn't done? I know they must lose some big fish from time to time, though they never seem to tell those stories. lol
@mavrkflyfishing
@mavrkflyfishing 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question! In tight line nymphing, trout don't really have a chance to run like they do with a floating line set up with all that slack. You've got pressure on your fish so fast that they can't run. You immediately steer the fish where you need. Sometimes the fish is very powerful and try to jerk loose, but you should have enough working line in your left had to play even big fish when this happens- Letting line slip through your fingers as it jerks, then strip line back when you can. If a big or powerful fish tries to run, or gets down stream of you in fast current line will automatically pull off the stinger if your left had is located straight perpendicular to the Stinger. Think about trying to control a big powerful dog. You have to keep the dog on a short and tight leash. If you give him a bunch of slack then you're in trouble. Same with fish. I've never lost a trout because I didn't have enough line or didn't have a drag system. And our wild trout here reach 20 inches plus. If you can master the skill of staying tight to the fish and netting them quickly instead of letting them run your catch rate will go way up. Hope this helps.

@@mavrkflyfishing , Thanks! I've been fly fishing now for 15 or so years but I am just starting with the euro/tight-line game. I've only done a couple days with a mono-rig and streamers on a switch rod. I just got my first official euro rod and haven't even been out yet. So, I anticipate a whole new learning curve. If it's true that this whole system can help eliminate some of those big runs, I definitely look forward to that! I will keep your product in mind. I love the idea and imagine it would be perfect on some of the longer days on foot when weight and room are factors. cheers

Why would you want such a light reel on a long rod. Sorry but this seems super gimmicky. Better off with your old 5wt reel, at least it will balance the rod out.
@mavrkflyfishing
@mavrkflyfishing 4 ай бұрын
Balance- The most over rated and misunderstood term in Tightening. What really does "balance" get you?? In order to balance a long rod means adding more weight to the reel. This means higher grip pressure is required when in motion. More weight requires more force to start and stop your rod, it wears out your shoulde when hight sticking, it slows your rod speed, and more reel weight decreases feel, accuracy and sensitivity at the rod tip. It's simple physics really. F=MA (Force=Mass x Acceleration). *There is no trout rod that is more accurate and more sensitive than a bare naked rod without any reel at all, but of course we all need some way to store the line. We're just offering a solution to people who want to get the most out of their rod when fishing for trout in technical waters. So, no gimmick here- just physics.

Very good video. One suggestion that I have found helpful to get more distance while contact/euro nymphing: use the lightest microleader you can cast. Adams Euro Nymph Mono Line is the bomb! It’s ceramic reinforced mono and has no memory-so no coils/less tangles. Double haul that and you can accurately send a size 16 nymph with 2.5 mm tungsten bead sailing 40 feet no problem.

Hi Uncle Dan. Thanks! Yes it's simple and light. Sort of like a recurve bow vs Compound bow, I guess. Most trout fishing in rivers and streams don't required a drag system to fight fish, so the reel is just a line holder. The line this little reel holds is very thin Euro nymph fly line. It's thin and light to be elevated off the waters surface to get a better dead drift. It's made for weighted nymph flies, but dry flies can be used. The Stinger can be used with weighted dry fly line, but must be 1 or 2 weight line because those lines are very thin as well.

This makes if perfect for Euro nymphing for trout or fish under lbs. or so. I always use the Stinger for river trout but I use a drag reel when fishing for larger steelhead or salmon.

Hi Uncle Dan- Yes the Stinger if very light compact and highly effective. But in case you didn't know, it's designed to hold thin Euro nymph fly line, not floating fly line. @mavrkflyfishing Yes, I think I have watched most of your videos but.... in my mind for small mountain streams at high altitudes you don't need much floating fly line. Would it hold say....40 or 50 feet of floating weight forward 3 or 4 weight with just enough backing to attack to the reel. Say 5 or 6 wraps of backing? I just got back from Montell Texas on the Nueces River where I just murdered the Small Mouth Bass and Panfish. I doubt I cast more than 35' of Fly Line with a 7.5' leader. Would it handle that?

what about using a mono rig?cant seem to cast far at all. or a dry and nymph on a mono?
@mavrkflyfishing
@mavrkflyfishing 7 ай бұрын
Sorry for the late rely- The problem with the mono rig is that your tightline distance is limited to the mono length. If you cast past the mono section then the heavy fly line brings the mono down to the water and all tightline advantage is lost. If you use super long mono section for to fish farther out, then you have the issue of handling the mono in your left hand, Stripping line and hauling casts are nor very good with mono. Fly line is much better to work when fighting fish as well. So, the Euro nymph line and leader set up is still better than a mono rig because it's light and can be elevated no matter how far you cast. You just have to learn to cast far by hauling your line. Also, euro nymph specific rods make all the difference in the world when it comes to casting small weighted nymphs.

Yes you can. That's what I use for my floating line set up. WF is better than Tapered line because the running line diameter is thinner. You may have to cut it shorter- if so, cut from the reel end not the leader end. The M1 holds about 20% line than the Stinger Comp because the Spool is taller. How do you adjust the drag?
@jeffsasaki7662
@jeffsasaki7662 Жыл бұрын
There's no drag Joel. Use your working line to play and strip the fish. Use your pinch finger on your rod hand to put the brakes on the fish. Usually for normal size trout it's best to not let the fish run. In Euro nymphing you've got pressure on that fish so fast that they don't have a chance to run. Your long, soft tip ESN rod will protect your tippet. Of course, we're not talking about anadromous Steelhead or Salmon, we're talking about river trout in say 22 inches. Check out our Instagram with plenty of videos of fish catches, none involving the use or need for a drag system. In 4 years of using a Micro Reel on the Truckee River I've never once needed a drag system to slow a fish down. Thanks!
@mavrkflyfishing
@mavrkflyfishing 4 ай бұрын
No drag needed. Letting a trout run is an old school technique and sometime unavoidable in dry fly fishing where there is a lot of slack line floating on the water's surface. But when Tightlining (Euro nymphing) you're tight on the fish so fast after the strike that they don't have a chance to run. Keep good pressure on the fish and keep it close, and steer it where you want it to go. Hand stripping fish in a fight is always more effective than a reels drag system and much more fun. You'll lose much less fish because stripping provides better pressure modulation than adjusting a reels drag tension. *Of course, larger anadromous fish like Salmon and larger Steelhead are powerful you'll need a reel with a good drag system and long line. Thanks!
