Wow! I love Hanno's work in two movies I saw with him: Sommersturm and Freier Fall (luckly, in this order, I honestly think it's more fun this way), but I've never seen him as he is, and I'm amazed! He's so nice and fun, looove it, and yes it is a bit of a shock that he is a bit less of a macho than I'm used to from the movies. I mean, I know he's an actor, but it still is a bit of a surprise:):):) He is an amazing actor. I have just rewatched Freier Fall after many years, and though I already knew the story, it was such a gorgeous experience, because of what a great movie it is: the direction, the story, the acting, the picture and the sound - OMG!!!! At some point during the love scene I thought "they can't be acting that good"... ❤

I have no Idea why 497 views and I'm the first comment, as it's a good interview of the guy who directed one of my favorite films. I've seen "The Good Thief" (this version) no less than 12 times. It is absolutely true; Nick Nolte is MAGNETIC in the role of Bob, the junkie/gambler and lover of art. Nolte is joined by some high end talent, including newcomer Nutsa Kuchianidze, and great character actor Tcheky Karyo as Roger the French detective (who has an obsession and sneaking admiration for Bob), Said Taghmaoui, Gerard Darmon (who, like Karyo, you'll recognize from a dozen or more films you've seen in your life) and a brief appearance by Ralph Fiennes-- a truly remarkable international cast. Neil Jordan, director of THE CRYING GAME, directs this film expertly, updating and "Doubling down on the story" in his own words here. You lot who haven't seen this film, get off yer arses and look it up...sadly, a bit hard to find streaming, best just to own it. Thanks for this great post...sorry I stumbled upon it a decade late!

McMurtry and Ossana optioned the short story in 1997 from Annie Proulx, who wrote the short story. They had written the script long before Ang Lee agreed to direct the film. He didn't develop the script with them; it had been written and was ready to film. In interviews, the writers said they asked Ang Lee twice if he would direct the film, and the first time he said no because he was going to do The Hulk. After The Hulk, Ossana asked him a second time, and he said yes. It was clear in the script that this is a story about two men who fall in love. Ennis is homophobic and doesn't allow himself to admit he's gay. It seems pretty obvious in the film as well. It's about rural homophobia and the damage it causes. Very odd he would say it's not "clear".
