Ha, it's kind of funny to know the way I move at the blue line is the "correct" way at the 21 second mark, but it's only something I do because my lateral crossovers aren't great. Nice to see more of the drills. They always look like they're fun to do, which probably helps.

Going through the same thing with my son. He is small and not very strong for his age. First question- do you have people shoot off the toe no matter what curve they are using? My son switched to a 92 and his shots are best when he starts the puck on the heel. 2-does the top hand wrist rotate around the stick or does it rotate the stick to get that position. I definitely notice Bedard has a lot of that top wrist rotation. Thanks!
@CoachCMACK
@CoachCMACK Ай бұрын
That is a great question. So the p92 is a little big of a different pull mechanic. I am assuming he is 2012-2014 age group and primarily is taking wrist shots? If we are trying to SNAP the puck, the Toe pull is not so much at the toe, but about 2-3 tape lines* from the toe. I have found that kids start to snap the puck better with the p92 from that position. If wrist shots are the main shot, closer to the heel, will get that puck spinning.

@@CoachCMACKHe’s an 81 lb 2011, just turned 13. He shoots both, although I think it would be good to just focus on one but I don’t want to be domineering dad coach so as long as he shoots I don’t want to dictate too much :). It falls apart on the ice a bit compared to off shooting tiles. One reason is he (and other kids I coach) don’t transition well when they are handling the puck in front and don’t end up getting in front of it enough.

@@aaronwhite1786 100%, making sure you have mobile ankles and good dorsei flexion will also help. If you feel like you are standing up tall, it could be either related to how tight you tie your skates or that you are tight in the hips/ankles. A good suggestion before going on the ice is to do a Planter fascia rollout (roll a golf ball under your arch) it will kinda hurt but feel good. It takes away that calf tightness that may be causing that upright position. Let me know how she goes!

This is one bad habit I see over and over with younger players is always taking another stick handle before shooting. In many cases, it allows the goalie to get into position and get set for the shot. If you're releasing as quickly as you do, the goalie has zero chance of getting set.
@CoachCMACK

yes it is a habit the majority of kids have. not only does it take longer but by looking down, the back up it changes the puck position and affects quality of shot, speed and accuracy.

Stuff you teach on puck retrievals, regroups, defensive play without the puck (do you teach stepovers or t-pushes when moving laterally?). Anything really. Even if it is stuff I already teach or have heard others explain, you can never have too many perspectives on things.

@@CoachCMACK well unless I’m turning very tightly I’m trying to see if it’s better to put the weight on the front part of the blade rather than behind. Maybe if I want to extend the turn I can rock back to my heel and then towards the toe. I was told by a skating coach to always lad on ball of feet on my forward stride. However another coach told me to ignore that advice so I dunno.

With the anchor shave, are you looking to just kind of plant that inside edge on the heel of the blade where it's not sharpened into the ice like a pick that you pivot around? I assume you c-cut with the inside edge of the opposite foot at the same time to really add a turn with your other foot anchoring in that point on the ice. I've been working a ton of getting my left turns with both feet as comfortable as my right, and hopefully once I get the stopping down comfortably with both feet, I can start working on the "fun" stuff like the punch turns and transitions from forward to backwards that use crossovers.

Echo the previous comment, Thank You for posting high quality content breaking down the mechanics! Quick follow up ?n: at 3 mins you are commenting on crossing over foot landing on the heel and how it’s not efficient? Could you please elaborate since many skills coaches preach exactly that - landing on the heels in crossovers?
@CoachCMACK
@CoachCMACK 2 ай бұрын
To be blunt, most Skills coaches have no idea what they are talking about. The reason why the the Toe to Heal strike is optimal, the ankle is loaded and you get a push right away. There are a few different cross overs for other situations, Nathan MacKinnon Gallop, puck protection/ squeezing by a player etc. that have different techniques. the same way that shooting a puck has 15 different ways so does our edge work
