I didn't buy this kit but it looks amazing. I have a Branch Ergonomic chair and the cylinder went out after 2 years. Branch sent me a replacement and a dumb video on how to replace it. I was not able to separate the last part (Cylinder and base with wheels) until this video gave me the confidence to just hit it with a hammer. I had been trying for 2 days with a mallet, and this morning I bathed the cylinder in WD-40 and finally hit it with the hammer. It probably took 8 hits with the hammer and the cylinder came loose. So happy I watched this video. Thank you!

DOZYANT vs office owl Office Chair Gas Lift Cylinder? Which one is the best?
@stevenowens4511Ай бұрын
Excellent video, and that tool looks very useful. I haven't used it, but I wish I had. The first chair I fixed, it was a huge pain to get the cylinder out of the bracket. The second chair, I ended up ruining the chair and had to replace the entire bottom half (bracket, gas cylinder, base and casters). For the first chair, after much attempting to use brute force and a large plumber's wrench, I asked a machinist friend and at his suggestion I heated the cylinder with a blow dryer for 20 minutes, right where the cylinder enters the chair bracket. That loosened things enough for me to pull the cylinder out with the plumber's wrench. For the second chair, I don't know why but it was flat out impossible. I took the chair over to my machinist friend's shop, we unbolted the bracket from the bottom of the chair, put the cylinder part in a vise and tried to use a half inch steel rod through the bracket. Ended up bending the rod into an L shape. Tried vise grips on the cylinder, ended up cutting grooves in the cylinder. I ended up throwing bracket, cylinder and chair base away and ordered a replacement. Also, you're the only video out of five I've looked at so far, to talk about the plastic cap, which also was not mentioned in any instructions that came with the replacement parts!

Hi Kevin, Good afternoon, I just came back from my Home Depot down here in Bogota/Colombia, where I got 1 16-36 mm hose clamp copper color and a white PVC pipe 1m long by 2 inch Ø. I asked the seller to cut a piece 12 cm long. Following your great and easy to follow instructions, and as I am myself quite stubborn, I decided to go on the PVC (the hose clamp seemed too easy.☺☺) I disassembled the base placed the 12 cm and every part in place and…… obviously I messed up with the 12 cm and had to redo every step (measure twice and cut once!!) therefore I cut another piece, this time 12.5 cm et voilà job done!!! I total I spent +/- US$ 4 (clamp 1 - 1m PVC 3). Tomorrow, I will paint it black, it will look as original hahaha ☺☺. Again 1000000000 thanks.

Please explain why the wheels need to be removed. Seems like it's an unnecessary step to me. Nice wheels...do they have skateboard wheel sealed bearings? Didn't know you invented them. Kewl. Plus it raises the chair a little...right? Lifetime warranty is awesome. New shock kit is...pricey.

Hi, well my chain was sinking every time I leaned back, and it got really, really aggravating. Like I was fooling with the thing all day, because you are always leaning back, for one reason or another. So I replaced the piston, which solved the problem of a spongy sit, but it still sank upon leaning back. So, one day I seriously studied the problem, and after observing another similar chair, discovered a tab was pressing on an apparently white nylon button, releasing the piston to sink. So, what I did was disassemble the original chair to access the same white nylon button, and using I think, my Dremal with a cut-off wheel, removed like1/16th-1/8th of the top of it, and it seems to have worked. It has been several weeks now, and I was real hesitant to really push back and still am, but a few times I did, and still no sinking. Yet, I still retained the ability to adjust the height of the chair. So try, at your own risk, but this was driving me nuts.

what i did was this. removed the masking tape and screwed on 11 hose clamps in total stacked one on top of another. its been 3 weeks and so far, fingers (and toes) crossed, not sinking anymore. still thankful for this vid, else i would hv trashed this chair and forked out a hundred bucks to get another. im overweight too and those 11 hose clamps are strong enough to support my weight

Any word on if there’s a lubricant that chairs use to allow the cylinder to move up and down and rotate inside the column? I have a chair where I gave up trying to remove the cylinder after having removed it from the column and base, but when I put the column back onto it, now there’s too much friction when the chair rotates and is so tight it won’t even rise when in the lowest position.
@amosfeldman94542 ай бұрын
Just an addition "tip". If when pressing the handle the chair doesn't lift up, try laying the chair flat on the floor and pull the handle - the chair base should extend even with a faulty / less-than-good hydraulic cylinder. There's no need to put your foot on the base and pull, as long as you're okay with extending it all the way up.

I wish that you guys had shown how to handle removal by going side-to-side with a mallet when the cylinder wouldn't come out.

Hello to all my sinking brothers and sisters around the globe and thanks to @theofficeoasis! I needed a quick fix to my sinking chair for few online calls and I had to avoid the awkward sinking on camera asap - the first solution worked perfectly. I didn't have the metal hose clamp - so I used the plastic "cable ties" - i used 5 on the whole width of the duct tape. Works like a charm. No longer sinking, I can keep sailing on my old chair. Happily postponing my new chair purchase to next month(s) :)

If you are using PVC pipe, you can paint it black for a better look. Be sure to sand the pipe first so that the paint will stick to the pipe.

I just installed the new cylinder, but when I sit on the chair it drops to the bottom. Then when I stand up it rises again. Not sure what I could have done wrong…
@theofficeoasis2 ай бұрын
Hey Caleb, this means that the button on top of the cylinder is constantly being pressed down by the lever. The button "should" only get pressed when you pull that chair lever. Do you have to have a herman miller chair by chance? If so they have an adjustment screw to ensure the button isn't always getting pushed down. Feel free to reach out to us at [email protected], this way we can help guide you through the process more. In addition, if its something where our cylinder isn't compatible, we can always provide you with a refund :)

@@theofficeoasisThanks for the reply. Thankfully I was able to figure it out. The chair is a Steelcase Leap V1, and all I had to do was remove the seat and loosen the set screw. The button is no longer being pressed constantly.
@KerrBox922 ай бұрын
my problem is not sinking but that something has come loose inside the seat and the arm rest has come loose, how exactly do i fix this? no, the bolts holding the arm rest in place are not loose, something inside of the seat of the chair, holding the arm rest to the rest of the chair has come loose and it looks like if it can be fixed at all, the chair is going to have to be dismantled

The lift is going to be landfill after it is removed, so no need to buy more tools when there's no need to be careful with the unit. Just go to town on it. I used a pipe wrench on a very VERY stubborn lift today and it came off no prob. I would try some WD40 if I needed it which can be an aid when needed. I do support speciality tools if you are someone who do service and maintenance on equipment like this and are going to re-use the lift, but for the average consumer who are just replacing a unit, I will just advice to go to town on it and get it done.

@theofficeoasis3 ай бұрын
Hello! Almost all chairs the kit is compatible with. 95% off all office chairs use the same size and style cylinder so most likely it will work for your office chair. If you purchased it, and for some reason it didn't fit, we'd gladly provide you with a full refund :)

Sink the chair all the way down, then invert the chair 180 degress and rotate the base a few times, let press the lever and let it extend, turn the base a few more times then put the chair right side up again. It lets the oil in cylinder re coat the seal.
@ceejaydeesoozaa3 ай бұрын
this is what i did. wipe the metal part below the chair. then used masking tape (cant find duct) then use tightened the hose clamp to the same location as demonstrated. at first i thought wow. it works. was seated in the chair for ard 10 mins and not sinking. then ard the 11th min down it went. may i ask what i did wrong please? any tips from any1 will be appreciated
@theofficeoasis3 ай бұрын
Hi there! It's possible that the hose clamp was not tight enough and/or it was slipping down the cylinder with that masking tape you mentioned. The most important part with the hose clamp method is to ensure it really grips the cylinder piston, if not it won't work properly. That being said, you can always try one of the other two methods mentioned in the video.

No no no no no. How did this get recommended? On pistons there is a piston ring. These can dry out and they slowly leak air. Almost always to fix this add a couple drips of oil. Move the chair up and down, turn it side to side. It might ACTUALLY be broken but it's probably fine after a little maintenance! Ya welcome
