If anyone's on a more limited budged, Tone Booster's has a free de-esser plugin (and lots of other, useful free plug-ins). It's impressed me, but I can't compare it to the one from Isotope. For a while I was using a de-esser plug-in created for Audacity but I found it changed the overall tone too much. The Tone Booster doesn't make any change I can notice beyond moderating those s sounds. (I suspect it's working more like a dynamic EQ, whereas the Audacity one is applying a static EQ filter.) There's also an Audacity de-clicker that I find quite effective - catches about 80% of the ones I notice on the default settings without sacrificing any tone I can detect. Sometimes it manages to pull out chair creaks and the like too. Sometimes I can get it to catch more by playing with the settings but that seems to always change the overall sound. So I'll either just use it for a troubled word or two or leave it as is. Anyways, helpful and interesting vid as always.

@@jaymyersvoiceover Yes. The SM7b sounds very pleasing, the TLM 102 sounds the most neutral out of the other Neumanns on the list and the MKH, the ETHOS sounds a bit muffled, might be better without the windscreen, the last three honestly don't sound good to me personally, TLM 103 was a bit bright and annoying sounding, the MKH 416 sounded thin and too sharp as well, the U87ai is last because there's something wrong with it, I don't know if the U87ai just sounds like that, or the one you have might be like that, or the recording environment is making it sound like that. I've read a reply of yours to a comment on another video of yours saying that the booth might be doing something to your microphones, whether they become too boomy or whatever else. I used to be a booth fanatic but I've realised now as well, booths don't necessarily sound as dead as you want, a room that's treated is probably better. Thanks for your videos 👍

@@jaymyersvoiceover Jay, you should consider a real omnidirectional microphone, if you read some people's opinion on it, they find it to be smoother when they record in omni. Our ears also pick up sound in omni, you could consider a neutral true omni mic like a Sennheiser MKH 8020, I'm really curious how it may sound in a treated enviroment.

I don't get it. So you mean those who don't want others to hear them (for example singing) from outside the booth or in other rooms of the house, will still be able to hear you? I've seen other Studiobricks demonstration where they are yelling and you can't hear them from inside. What am I missing? I guess like it says: It's VO. For voice overs. Not so much for singers who live with others. Oh well. That's a deal breaker for me.
@jaymyersvoiceover
@jaymyersvoiceover 7 күн бұрын
It’s possible those were triple walled versions which have more isolation than the version I bought. The “VO” part of it simply refers to the additional items like the desk, mic arm, etc. and doesn’t refer to the isolation. I’d reach out to them directly though if you have more questions. They were really responsive and helpful with me when I was thinking about it.

Nice video, Jay. Currently working with a Studiobricks booth and need to cool it down for my longer sessions. Never even occured to me to simply ask for a few minutes break to cool down. Great critique, Jay! Another thing I would like to point out is the order of these spots. If this were a demo, put your best foot forward! In this case, I feel like the best spots were towards the end, while the riskier, playful type of reads were up front. All in all, another great feedback video!

Hi Jay, great video! I ended up picking up the One Plus VO Edition that came with a bass trap this sits right behind my head. I'm finding that after all the setup, there is an unpleasant resonance in the lower frequency that I can't surgically remove with EQ without taking a chunk out of where my voice sits (deep voice), and I'm having trouble figuring out where or how to treat the space at the source to get rid of the reverb. Do you have any tips?
@jaymyersvoiceover

Thanks! and congrats on the booth! Extra padding/bass traps in the corners will probably help. I also covered the desk and glass door with a wool desk pad and 'curtain' to further tamp down resonance.

Hey Jay! I just wanted to say that your tutorials on processing vocals as well as your subscriber feedback videos are exceptionally helpful for me and many others! Before stumbling across your channel I had a decent idea on how to make a narration/commentary sound good, whether that'd be proper mic technique, audio processing etc. however, since discovering your channel and videos, it's opened my eyes on just how much can go into a narration. It's far from easy and can be very time consuming, however it is INCREDIBLY inspiring and makes me want to continue practicing. I'm still unsure if I want to get into voice over or even voice acting at an intermediate level. However, if I ever do, you'll be the main reason I get into it! Also, this is a fairly big request so, if your not up to it that's understandable. However, in the future would you consider reviewing a completely unprocessed narration from me? (if I decide to submit an audio file in your submissions ofc). If not, that's fine! I know you can be incredibly busy. Nonetheless, tysm for reading my comment! I hope you realize the impact you've had on people is much bigger than it seems. Thank you for your tips and hardwork, it's greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the video. I'm looking for a booth large enough for an upright acoustic piano. I noticed they offer custom sizing, but I'm wondering how soundproof it is for people on the outside. The main purpose would be to be able to practice classical piano loudly and record without disturbing my neighbors on the other side of the wall. I can currently hear their conversations (Bronx here!). Thanks!
