I followed your advice and it works great for me. After I got it setup I took 3 pictures and I had no problems with it. I don’t have to practice with the setup I just have to remember that the camera is setup for back button focus. Great video and Thanks for sharing your opinion. ❤❤❤

Just double checking cause I got confused... If the bride is walking towards me, because the depth of field is constantly changing, I would AF back button thru each shot? Unlike when not moving forward or back, lock the focus and forget bout it until range changes.

BBF seems like a useful tool... But I don't think it will work when trying to get a self-timer 2second or 10second shot... unless you somehow focus on a person in advance where you will be during the shot. Am I missing something here?

I always used this option with all my canon cameras because I really find it useful adjusting the composition without losing the focus on what I wanted to be on focus. Can you please confirm me that this function still exist on canon 5d mkIV? I retried it once and I ran into troubles to set it this way… Something was different from previous canon eos 5d.

You keep on saying pressing half way on the AF-ON button, I guess there is no pressing half way here right, it is simply press all the way through. Pressing half way only applies for the shutter button in a non back button focus mode right?

Great vid! When you say bride is coming towards you and you press halfway? That confused me. You're pressing and holding the AF-ON button while triggering the shutter as the bride comes towards you? Your finger always has AF-ON pressed then. acting as sort of an AI Servo focus?

Chad hi! great video! I have a Canon M50 and am just starting to want to take control of focus instead of the camera. I tried manual focus but that's too slow. I think this video is not for beginners but I'll ask anyway - when you set the focus button to be used with your thumb - were you assigning that function to the * button? Does that mean that the * button's exclusive function becomes focus? thanks!

Excellent explanation on Back Button focusing! I have a silly question… after it’s all set up. When pressing AF-On to grab focus for a still subject, I do not hear a beep as I do when is One Shot mode. Is that just how AI Servo works or am I missing a setting. I apologize in advance for a novice question. I do not have beep disabled, fyi.
@ChadBarry
@ChadBarry Жыл бұрын
You’re absolutely right. There is no beep because technically you’re still tracking motion. Don’t worry. Once it’s locked on you’re good to go. If you photograph events or wildlife you don’t want the beep on anyways as it can be distracting.

Well done Chad. It really is the only way to go. The idea of someone else using the camera got me thinking: wouldn’t it be nice if the manufacturers made a menu command that simply says: BBF on/off. A firmware update would cover a lot of cameras!! Make life simple !

I just got the Canon R6…. I would like to try the back button focus…whole new thing to me. So when you assign focus to Af On button…do you hold that button in and recompose? Or do you press and release button and recompose ? Hope someone will answer this. Want to get this right, before I get onto other areas. Hard breaking from old bait of using the shutter button for focus/shutter. Thanks
@ChadBarry

If you want to recompose you need to press to focus and then release to recompose.

@@myflowers1112 Mary, the answer is “yes”. You continually hold the back button focus for continuous focus for photography. Not needed when you shoot video. When I posted my comment, I didn’t notice how old this video is. I found the info from another content creator.

In One Shot mode as soon as you lock focus it’s stops the focussing system from tracking. So as the bird moves further or closer it will fall out of focus. AI Servo is required to track subjects in motion.
