For a growing town like Wisbech, it's riddiculous no rail station exists anymore, considering much of the track bed does still exist. They need to reinstate it, asap. Good reporting and thank you for keeping the subject alive.

Myself, together with my friend Jerry Alderson, rode on the last train to Wisbech back in 2001 - a Hertfordshire Railtours charter, whose name I have forgotten. As my Mum lives in March, the reopening of the railway to Wisbech has been a subject dear to my heart. Hopefully, I will be giving a presentation on options for this line at the Railfuture East Anglian Branch AGM, to be held at the Friends Meeting House in Bury St. Edmunds on the last Saturday in February 2025.

Is this the line that they were proposing to re open that goes from Litchfield to Alrewas where the National Memorial is, they wanted to provide a route via public transport, also were they not planning before HS2 got cancelled to join this line up to Notttingham Parkway, its a pity that it did not go ahead, but i think it will be revived as it makes sense and there are plans to build Manchester to Birmingham as a conventional railway under the Mayors of Birmingham and Manchester.

Yes, this was the line between Walsall and Burton on Trent via Lichfield and Alrewas. I worked over there in the very early 1980s with goods traffic, from up north, for Bescot (then home on the cushions.) We regularly worked a "Tripper" from Saltley that worked its way across the Sutton Park and up to Wednesbury before shunting up on to Wednesbury High Level with some rusty buffers (the old Snow Hill Great Western bit that was all that was left there after closure.) That was another one of our jobs that ended with leaving the engine at Bescot and coming home on the cushions. We also worked goods traffic back from Gloucester, via Stourbridge*, Dudley and Wednesbury, then into Bescot before going home on the cushions, yet again - *even shunting in the yard at Kidderminster on that one on the odd occasion, long before the Severn Valley Railway got their hands on it of course. There was also still a connection back then from Wednesbury to the Stour Lines that joined up between Coseley and Tipton. I'm not sure if the Tipton end was still connected but the Coseley end certainly was and light engines from Oxley for Bescot sometimes got sent round there, depending on the driver's route knowledge (mostly Bescot men worked round there.) The name of the old steel works over there, around Princes End, escapes me at the moment but it was a huge place in its time. I went past it a couple of times as a young secondman but never worked into or out of there. An awful lot of railway has disappeared just in the last forty years or so. Very sad. Sorry for the long winded interjection too.

The line at Hammerwich was still mostly in situ into the 2010's. However most of it was stolen by scrap metal thieves. I can remember crossing the bridge with a police officer and talking about the missing sections of track. Sad to see it's nearly all gone now.

They aren't that easy to spot! I was following the line along using Google maps. The only walkable part appears to be the McLean way in Walsall that runs to Brownhills where we saw the aqueduct. The other parts were waypoints along the route to Lichfield that we studied on street view 😊💙🚂

I pass that practically every time I head to the A1, there’s another disused line near here btw…it’s the old M&GNJ railway which went from Bourne to Saxby. It was part of a wider line which would’ve taken you from Leicester and Nottingham to the likes of Holbeach and Kings Lynn. Stations included: Bourne Castle Bytham South Witham Edmondthorpe & Wymondham Saxby & Melton Mowbray Traced it last year and there’s a video specifically on that on my page 👍

The Village I live in . we had to get permission to walk the line from Colsterworth to the ECML at stoke tunnel it has now been taken over by somebody else so who the old track bed belongs to now I don't know thats going east going west is the nature trail. Where you first get to the top along the track bed there is some brick work down the bank that was the old signal box for the sidings to the south and north of the main branch which was knocked down and pushed down the bank where it widens out is where the siding began to the south . The bridge you come to is a occupation bridge with the wooden fence it wasn't the main road bridge . the road you crossed from one track to the other track was the original road . The machinery is a fence post . The gate you went down steps to was North Pit . the last thing you was puzzled on is a holder for a guy wire which was connected to a telegraph pole . Hope I haven't been painful ? www.tracksthroughgrantham.uk/recording-the-railway/railways-rediscovered/the-highdyke-branch-rediscovered-part-1/

Many years ago when I was working as a delivery driver, I had several deliveries of mechanical parts to the engineering workshop at the McCain's cold store and chip factory. The workshop was round the back, a few yards away there were 2 mine shafts side by side that were gated off. The portals were about 20ft across, semi circular, heading eastwards, and sloped down at maybe a 30 degree angle. I asked one of the engineers about them, he said there were used to dump rubbish etc down. I asked him how deep they were, and he said "Effing deep"! They were part of the ironstone workings at Easton and had their own little tramway going westwards towards the A1.

@@stephendaddysadventures7045 Cool. They were definitely there around 1988/89. The whole cold store site was a huge rail yard and sidings with workshops and loco sheds etc. The iron ore came up the adits on a conveyor to a gantry before dropping into rail cars. I saw the gantry, it was massive.

@@bobulousgaming5353 The plan is not to move any to Cornwall, if the trial is a success then it will see the 230s replace 165s on the other short Thames Valley Branches. The 165s are not permitted in Cornwall. The 165s will displace a few more 150s in Devon to allow more 150s to work in Cornwall. The plan is to use the 175s to replace 158s, 165s and 166s on long-distance services. You choose about the wetteset winter in 20 odd years to visit (leaving aside 2012/13 and the "Great Flood"). The mega puddle you retreated back from is up to 3 inches deep and I have been wearing wellies since Nov/Dec time. You could have gone the other way round and walked along the high level path running besides the fenced upper meadow, that path drops down to the railway track at the far end, but it is also pretty muddy at the moment. The site is a SSSI for it`s wet neutral grassland But by April it should be pretty dry again and in fact for 6-7 months of the year, there is usualy no standing water in evidence on the site. There are a few fragments of railway infrastructure left and at the southern end of the reserve you will find the brick supports of an iron girder bridge that was in situ when the railway was active.
