Should you also put glue on the sides of the coasters?
@EllafulDecoКүн бұрын
You can, but it’s hard to control the glue on the sides. If you need to, I suggest tape for the sides whenever possible.

Did you say you waited 12 hours after mixing thickset to pour the first layer? Also did you have to mix new thickset for the last layers since so much time passed? Or was it the same cup/resin you mixed from the begging? When I do deep pour you can see the layers on the side how are you preventing this? Thank you 🥰 Thank
@EllafulDecoКүн бұрын
My time is just a reference because that’s based on my work environment and how much I’m mixing up. Warmer environments and large batches will result in the resin curing faster and if you wait that long, your batch may end up hardening before you even pour. Every layer is a new batch of resin. I let each layer cure to a hard gel like state before I pour the next. If I press on it, it’ll leave a mark kind of state. As for the layer lines, getting the timing right to pour the next layer minimizes it, but sometimes I will still notice it.

Hi Ellaful , I starting preserving flowers years ago , but finally got everything right and my epoxy has saddened me so much , all my art has turned yellow , not in years , not from being in the sun , but in 3 months and wrapped and put inside a tot stored in my room , not in the sun. I mix it so tediously as I been doing resin for more then 7 years . Could you let me know if you have any yellowing problems , I am happy i hadnt sold anything , just gifted , but so depressed that they yellowed so fast. would love to know your opinion on best casting non yellowing epoxy since I know since this video you may have tried other deep pour resin.
@EllafulDeco13 күн бұрын
Hi Sherry. I only use TotalBoat resin so I am not familiar with others. Unfortunately, all resin yellows over time. It is more obvious in thicker pieces (like 2-3" floral blocks) because of the thickness. For some thinner pieces like coasters, over time, while they still appear clear, the side view may look slightly yellow because of the depth of resin. I've had the most luck with TotalBoat's Thickset casting resin so that's what I mainly use. I do let everyone know that all resins will yellow over time beforehand and give a care card for how to store the piece. I would suggest looking into pressing your flowers and making them into thinner pieces so the yellowing wouldn't be as obvious over time. You can also look into frames, but I worry about moisture getting back into the flowers and causing them to change color quicker so that would be something you'd want to look into if you go that route.

I really love the way these came out. I'm a glitter girl also!! LOVE glitter! I do have a few questions, though, I hope you don't mind: first, how do you keep the colors from melting into each other? It seems whenever I try to put more than one color at a time, they don't stay in one place like yours did? Is there a trick to that? And second, my coaster molds are not round, they are...well I can't post a picture here, but they're the geode type ragged edged ones, so I'm not going to be able to get the cork bottoms. Do I NEED them, and if so, if I place 4 small ones on each coaster, do you think that will look tacky? Thank you so much!! I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to more tutorials!! xo
@EllafulDeco22 күн бұрын
Thank you for your support! To keep the colors from blending, you can use a resin with a shorter work time so it gels faster, or you can wait until your resin thickens so there isn't much time for the colors to blend. As for the cork, it's a personal preference. You can use the little rubber dots instead of corks. I find that having the cork or rubber on the bottom helps the coasters from slipping on the table.

Ella, as I'm watching your video, as a beginner, I'm wondering which resin you think is the best for its value?
@EllafulDeco22 күн бұрын
I only use TotalBoat resin for the past 4 years so I can't give an answer to that. It is pricier compared to other resins though, but that works really well for me so to me. I've tried others, but the results varied.
@JoshThomas-w9n23 күн бұрын
how long do you need to wait between layers?
@EllafulDeco22 күн бұрын
The wait time varies with resin and your work environment (temperature mainly), but usually when the first layer is tacky, it’s safe to pour the next layer.

@EllafulDecoАй бұрын
Thank you for watching! A top coat isn’t always a need. In this video, the top coat is where I create the waves for the ocean. A top coat also is great to bring back a shiny finish to the surface of a piece or fill in any bubbles/holes.

Hi! These are beautiful. Does it matter what kind of thing you use to make the white part? Could I use normal acrylic, pigment paste, alcohol ink, etc?
@EllafulDecoАй бұрын
Thank you! I think it does matter, because some pigments give better results for the waves than others, in my opinion. I recently tried out the white paste from Eye Candy Pigments and that works great, too. I never tried acrylic or alcohol inks for the waves.

I followed your link for the high performance fast resin hardener. I thought I ordered the slow but I guess I ordered the fast hardener. I have several orders for some coaster and I have never used this before. Will the fast hardener work ok or do I need to try to send it back?
@EllafulDecoАй бұрын
Hi! If the coasters are for orders, I would highly suggest you use what you're familiar with and know how to get the best results for it. Even with the same resin, I have a slightly different process for colder days and warmer days. So it may take some time to figure out how this works in your environment. That said, for the High Performance resin specifically, the difference between the fast and slow hardener is the work time, from my understanding. I never used the fast hardener because I cannot work that fast. According to their website, the gel time between the fast and slow is 10 minutes vs 40 minutes. You'll still be able to make the base of the coasters with the fast hardener, but you'd have to work fast.

Why was glue applied ? What would happen without it ? Nice video
@EllafulDecoАй бұрын
Thank you for watching! When I pour the top coat with the waves, resin drips over the sides. You’ll see it when I first flip the coaster to the back before removing the glue. When I remove the glue, you’ll see the resin drips peel off with the glue. Without the glue, the drips would be stuck to the coaster itself and I would’ve had to sand and polish the back for a flat and clean bottom.

How did you put the wood at the bottom of the coasters at the end of your video? Or did you make the work on the wood surface from the beginning?
@EllafulDecoАй бұрын
I placed a cork backing on the bottom of the coasters. The corks come with adhesive themselves. I just peel the backing that protects the stickiness off and apply as shown in the video. The coaster itself is entirely resin. I do have a voiceover explaining my steps in the video. Supplies are also linked in the description. If you are interested in resin on wood surfaces, I have a couple of those tutorials on my channel as well.

Newbie here.. hi, why the need for the glue back when the coasters are flat down anyway when doing the waves? Desperate to learn as much as I can, beautiful coasters, thank you ☺️
@EllafulDeco2 ай бұрын
Hello! You’ll see that when I peel off the glue, there are resin drips on the glue that get peeled off as well. Without the glue layer, those drips will need to be sanded down instead because they will be cured to the coaster itself. Then we’d have to go through a whole sanding and polishing step for the bottom. I use the glue when I do any top coats to protect the bottom of a piece so I don’t have to sand.

Thank you so much for sharing this video! It was extremely helpful. I watched it several times before I started working on my own resin. My project turned out great considering it was the first one! However, when the resin was completely cured and I took out my resin rose out, I noticed that there is an air bubble in the middle of the flower. If I try to sand it - this will definitely damage the rose. Would it be wrong just to leave the bubble there? Would it damage the rose with time? Any advice would be so much appreciated 🌸 Thank you!

hello. For how many days we need to dry out our fresh flowers. So that it doesn't rot in the mould.???
@EllafulDeco3 ай бұрын
That depends on your flowers. Most will dry in 3-4 weeks. I leave roses in there for 6 weeks. Smaller/thinner flowers will probably dry in 1-2 weeks. They should feel like paper and are fragile when they’re dried. If you’re not sure whether they’re dried or not, you can always leave them in there for longer.

@EllafulDeco3 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching! Can you elaborate on the sparkles? It could be glitter or just lots of mica powder. I don’t suggest glitter in molds though because I’ve heard of the glitter transferring from the mold to the final piece and it leaves a little spot in your mold where the specks originally were.

@EllafulDeco3 ай бұрын
I don’t know what mold you’re talking about, but when you say shine, are you talking about the mold itself or the final piece that comes out of the mold. If it’s the piece that comes out of the mold, that depends on the master that you’re molding. The silicone picks up the texture of the piece you’re molding. If you’re molding a matte tray, you mold will give you a matte finish. If you’re molding a shiny tray, your mold will give you a shiny finish. I hope this answers your question.

I don't think you're supposed to wrap the seal around the can like this. Just leave it on the lid, the vacuum will compress them together with the seal in between.
@EllafulDeco3 ай бұрын
You’re probably right, but it was really difficult to remove the lid when I did it that way so that’s why I wrap the seal. I’ve been using it this way almost daily for 4 years now and it’s still working like day 1, reaches the maximum vacuum without issues so I guess it doesn’t matter.
