Unless you get live mealworms with their fatty bodies still intact, you are feeding them empty skin! Birds refuse to eat these dried meaworm carcasses!

Yeah they usually get black soldier fly larvae, I noticed that certain brands are better then others. I only do mealworms when I can't get a quality solder fly larvae. You're right though, the last batch of mealworms were shells.😱

Yeah my husband said he's not going to grow that one again. But it's hard to see when a little girl spat out some Cherokee Purple seeds one year and it grew beautiful fruit right outside their front door lol

You mentioned that you just cut them up and freeze them . No need to blanch them? Do they freeze well? Thank you for your reply. Really interested to know how I can preserve my extra harvest.
@SemiHomestead Жыл бұрын
I haven't blanched them, not sure why people say to do that when freezing, but I've not had any issues when I take them out of the freezer and cook them. I just looked it up and supposedly blanching stops the enzyme action which affects color, taste, and texture - um I haven't had a problem with any of those lol.

That was only a temporary fix. Most likely it's caused by a worn internal riser section and can only be remedied by replacement, which is an easy fix.

Thank you for the comment. I agree and eventually I did dig it out and replace it.

The mimosa tree is a nitrogen fixing pioneer tree , I love ally cropping with them , make perfect shade for hot weather at about 70% shade . When you prune the roots have nitrogen nodules and will release it in to the soil and the green is a great chop and drop material ! So it's a fertilizer shade cloth all in one ! Nice trellis !!
@SemiHomestead2 жыл бұрын
Hi Wells Farm! Thank you for that info, that's great to know. The main problem with this tree is that it's growing between my chain link fence and the neighbor's wood fence - actually entangled and breaking both fences. I chop it multiple times a year and it KEEPS GROWING! It's been three years and only now the branches that I made my trellis with are breaking down!
@Awellsfarm2 жыл бұрын
@@SemiHomestead that's the awesome part , you can cut it very hard and not kill it but each time gather 20%+ leaf protein for the soil microbes or animal fodder and each time you cut you release more and more fertility. Don't be afraid to cut it out of the fence and keep it tame .
@sheilagray39142 жыл бұрын
your pots are too small and you are pruning them too much. They need the leaves for photosynthesis. You are killing them.
@SemiHomestead2 жыл бұрын
You're right that I was killing them but I had seen others grow in buckets, maybe 5 gallons would have been better but for others it's worked. Right now and the past year, I put them in raised beds and they did much better, now the buckets are holding on to berry bushes til I find some space to grow them in the yard!

The tree is called a Flaming Mimosa Tree which blooms these beautiful pink puff like flowers. I used to have one in my previous house, we purchased and planted it in the front yard because it looked a little tropical and it's known to attract hummingbirds.

Nice trellis. I had a weird tree weed that looked like that. It kept popping up next to the house. And i'd lop ot off, and it would pop back up. I finally dug out as much as i could and paved over it. Someone called it a juneberry that might have been planted by a squirrel.

how did this grow for you? Did you just grow it as an annual?
@SemiHomestead2 жыл бұрын
It sprouted great but it didn't hold up to the weather before I could bring it into the house. I'm going to try again this year but I may be too late again. It did great in Florida, I was able to harvest a lot of greens by growing about a dozen plants and then drying the leaves and making powder.

Your tutorial is just what I needed today! Thank you for sharing these cleaning tips. I was doing a natural release and it was taking forever. So I turned the pot off and waited a while. Still the button remained up and I couldn't open the lid. So I took the end of the spoon and touched the button gently. Down it went! So I knew there was something clogging up the vents. Your cleaning tips saved the day and now everything is working smoothly again.

I think you can get 10 and 20 gallon cloth pots fairly inexpensive. You have more harvest. Have you noticed blossom end rot? Are the flowers not creating fruit or has the fruit rotted on the end and destroyed harvest? Go to a hydroponic store. They are in every state. Tell them you need organic or natural calcium and magnesium supplements. I think you will see a world of difference. Also if they don’t have the natural you can go on Amazon and just buy cal-mag. You just add it to your watering bucket. Look into Dr Earth tomato and veg. It’s on Amazon and look for down to earth products. They are both on Amazon. You should still be able to benefit a nice harvest in 5 gallon buckets. I’ve used them plenty of time. Tomatoes need a lot of nutrients and I forgot… down to earth azomite! It’s Trace minerals!!! You won’t regret it. Nice garden! Thanks for sharing.
@SemiHomestead2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment. I decided to direct sow into my raised beds the past two years and they did so much better; along with more amendments like azomite etc. I think it wasn't getting enough sun too - my raised beds are on the other side of our yard and it would get morning and afternoon sun vs just the afternoon sun. I also changed the type of tomatoes - and they did awesome. I have looked into grow bags but since we have the space I'm going to grow tomatoes in the raised beds and leave the buckets for other types of vegetables or flowers that won't need all the space and nutrients of the beds. I have also used Dr Earth tomato and veg - but the buckets and the varieties just didn't work that first two years - it was most likely the variety I had.

Mimosa is not invasive everywhere. It depends on where you are. I grew up in Louisiana and they were becoming invasive but then a fungus attacked them. There’s still a good number but they aren’t like they were before. They actually are a really good nectar plant for butterflies and tropical migrant birds such as orioles and hummingbirds who are more used to trees with extravagant flowers like that. They smell nice too they are really beautiful trees.
@Cathy246013 жыл бұрын
They bloom around the tail end of migration/early summer. I saw one once with about seven orioles and swallowtail butterflies feeding on it. It was like a mini tropical paradise.

Some tiny pots. Have to be completely root bound in a month. I have Cherokee purple's in 15 gallon and 20 gallon bags. Both are big and giving out 1+pound tomatoes but the one in the 20 is probably 2ft taller. If you can keep up with watering it can be done in 5-7 gallon bags, but extremely difficult. Also, from my experience you wont to prune leaves only from bottom and when plenty of other leaves are on the plant. Tomatoes or nothing else can get the energy they beed without many leaves
@SemiHomestead2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. I guess it was disappointing that the Cherokee Purple didn't grow since my neighbor about 5 miles away, had a random Cherokee Purple grow beautifully on the side of her house (not even a garden) because her 5 yr old ate a tomatoe and dropped some seeds on the grass - two plants popped up and bore fruit and I couldn't get one tomatoe!

1. Use potting soil instead of garden soil for best results. 2. Make a few holes on the dome and It’ll work as a mini green house. 3. Water it good enough but not damp.(water lightly from the holes every other day) 4. Put tape all around the dome and the base. 5.Leave it outside where you get full sun and you are good to go. 6. Transfer when needed. (Never plant different kinds of peppers close. They may cross and you will get something different than you expected.)

It would be nice if you shared something that is proven to work especially after failing the first time. I have had no success at all with this piece of junk. It's black so it absorbs heat, and luckily I didn't put all my eggs in one basket. The seedlings I started using the little brown square things works great. Don't waste your money on this garbage.
