How does air escape with the plastic pieces in place? Thanks

Aluminum ridge vents are leaks waiting to happen. I had mine installed with a new roof in 2012 and in 2018 I had visible leaking in my ceiling. Contractor came out and had to replace some roof decking that was damaged and installed new aluminum vent. Jump to 2023 and I had another leak in a different spot. There are just too many exposed nail/screws with aluminum vents. Each one is a leak waiting to happen. I smartened up this time I had them rip off the aluminum vents and install shingle over style vents. Just 4 nails that are exposed and sealed vs the dozens for the aluminum ridge vent.

Thank you for a very informative video on ridge vent installation. Please provide your guidance and recommendation. I am curious what are the requirements for a ridge vent installation? We have high cathedral ceiling in our living room with soffit vents and traditional rolled insulation in the rafters. Should a ridge vent be installed for our type of roof? What is the impact if a ridge vent is installed in our type of roof? I have heard the term gable applied to our living room, so what is the difference between a A-frame, Gable and Cathedral. Should a ridge vent be installed for our type of roof? What is the impact if a ridge vent is installed in our type of roof?

I will guarantee you that everyone of the nails you installed in those flashing tins is rusted completely. Do not nail the tins at the bottom ,nail them at top of shingle .Also the ice and water shield that you used will not stick 100% unless you used modified roof cement over the plastic flange.

My skylights been troublesome past several years. Leaks every year. I'm put roofing tar all around the seams and it still leaks. It almost certainly needs replacing, refkashing, and the surrounding shingles replace. I just can't figure out exactly where the leak is coming from

This is infuriating!! As if it's not enough that we home owners are paying for the home (including warranty on the roof) and insurance, we still have to come out of pocket to have someone fix what another company or the builder screwed up in the first place. Do the roofs not undergo inspection prior to closing on a home? Those issues are ridiculous and someone should definitely be sued.

Just recently had a skylight removed from a vaulted ceiling when a metal roof was installed. Was wondering what type of insulation be used inside the opening before patching it up? Not sure if faced or unfaced insulation should be used, or if using a baffle for separation between the insulation and roof deck is needed. Want to make sure I do it right correctly so moisture forming doesn't become an issue. Trying to find info on insulating such an opening and hard to find info....any tips would be greatly appreciated

Don't waste your time with nails for metal vent. Use hex head metal roof screws with attached neoprene washer. Pull all loose nails out and replace them with screws.

not supposed to lift over the cab. Not a very good. Safest this is directly from the side of the truck. But definitely not over the front axle. Overload the front axle Big-time. Yes I have my own roofing company in my own crane.

What surfaces are sealed with end plug sealant? Is it just on the shingles or is it coated all around where plug contacts metal? Thanks.

@CTHuntnFish2 жыл бұрын
With the angle of that wall, you should use a head flashing and not step flashings, the water will always run away from that wall.
@pedrohdz19646 жыл бұрын
Yeah you shouldn't running those shingles up on the wall that's crap! ,the ridge vent is not good you may used cobra ridge vent or other better brand than that if you calling professional,!common roofing repairs is what I do every day and I know well what's a good quality and well done work !

why not just shingle over that old ridge vent opening, and put a round vent on the sides of each peak under the eaves, facing slightly downward. these ridge vents all eventually leak, vent it out the side under the eaves, why weaken the waterproof capabilities of the entire roof, with these silly ridge vents. the old homes didn't use them and their roofs LASTED LONGER. but they had vents in the attics under the eaves on each peak, on the siding, with screens or flap vents in them.

Three tab shingles are not waterproof !!! He should have replaced the 15 or 30 felt in that area and put down Gaf # 75 tar paper that has fiberglass embedded in it . It is the least I would use .for this job . Also , that flashing is too thin . No compensation from GAF for mentioning their product ! Other companies have similiar products .
Thank you for sharing your videos. You have been extremely helpful to many, many folks who need your guidance. I have been a state-licensed roofing contractor in Calif for 44 years and you have my highest kudos!

I think a lot of the problem is that the sections do not interlock and only butt together
@highqualityhomemaintenance75657 жыл бұрын
The problem you have now is that three next roofer will have to take off the siding to remove the shingles. Come on guys, think of the next guy..... make it easy for him (the next roofer) to not screw up.

MdRoofingServices Dumb questions: If the integrated rubber collar is the only part that's cracked, and the rest of the existing flashing boot has no chance of deterioration, why not just squeeze on a new separate collar that is wide enough to cover the cracked collar? In fact, why shouldn't someone do that to begin with to protect the integrated collar from UV rays?
@BigGamethefirst7 жыл бұрын
fyi, you nailed your step in the bottom center. That is a very potential leak. If you place your nail at the top of the step, the next shingle will cover it for no possible leaks. If you are worried about your step being loose at the bottom without the nail. Bend your step at an obtuse 45 degree angle and then when you press it against the wall and fasten it, it will sit in there tight.

Hi Mr. Thomas. Question, ¿is that upper 'header pan' bent up at the skylight's upper side (side facing roof's peak)? ¿Or is it simply notched to receive said skylight's upper side, please? Thank you. tonyd.
@1971SuperLead8 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert, but to me it looks like the real problem is that the shingles are not adhering to the black line. They shouldn't lift up like that.
